_____

For those who haven’t been, Car Rapide’s are one of the biggest symbols of Dakar. Painted in the city’s colors (yellow and blue) each owner is also an artist designing their Car Rapide with their own style and flair.

They are the heartbeat of the city shuttling people everywhere and moving with their own rhythm.

It may take you an extra flight to get there but Mozambique is one of the most beautiful places to visit on the continent - especially if you love the beach.

Add to that and incredible fusion of Portuguese and African influences that show up everywhere from food to music and you’ve got an endless amount of vibes.

is an entrepreneur, designer, creative director, and development officer who splits her time between Dakar, Senegal and NYC.

We love how she’s using her creative force to raise awareness and $$$ for AND how she’s exploring Senegal deeply going beyond Dakar and visiting traditional spaces that hold much value for the culture.

On her feed expect to get stunning visuals from Senegal and other parts of the continent, some of the most 🔥 boubous you’ve ever scene, and stunning accessories from her line featured in the cover image.

• honor the ancestors •

More than a photo opp, the “door of no return” - a name coined to symbolize the last exit point on the continent for enslaved Africans - is a meaningful place of remembrance for Black people everywhere.

Whether you are a direct descendant of enslaved people or a Black person walking consciously in the fullness of our interwoven histories - visiting these sites is often a moving experience.

There are several “Door of No Returns” dotting West and Central Africa’s Atlantic coasts and we rounded up six that should go on your bucket list.

From plot twists in Nigeria to an island in Sierra Leone click the link in our bio to learn more about these historic markers of the past.

•limitless joy > fear •

Like many of you fear was an emotion felt by our entire team in 2020. Fear of getting COVID, fear of uncertainty, fear of survival, you name it fear was showing up.

With the virus turning a corner (in some respects) - moving out of fear and into possibility, hope, and definitely joy is the energy for all of us.

That’s why this photo shared by a Kenyan storyteller now based in Cape Town struck us.

Here in Lamu with her friends looking like bliss, this image is a reminder of what’s possible and what’s to come.

Lean into it, we definitely are.

• All Black Everything •

You’d think staying at a black-owned hotel in Africa would be pretty straight forward but unfortunately that’s not the case - yet.

This guide covers the best of the best in black-owned hospitality on the continent with everything from boutique hotels in city centers to safari lodges that allow us to take in the land without feeling that icky tinge of colonialism.

Get into it with the link in our bio and let us know if we’ve missed your faves.

Young people in Dakar are currently taking to the streets after the arrest of MP Ousmane Sonko who has been accused of r**e.

While the arrest of an opposition leader was the trigger (some feel the arrest was politically motivated) many Senegalese are using the protests to share long simmering frustrations around a lack of job opportunities, pandemic-induced economic hardship and the President.
