🙌 UPOPOY 🙌
The Ainu are the original ethnic people of Hokkaido. It is estimated that there are only 25,000 Ainu people still in existence!
However, at Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum and Park in Hokkaido, huge efforts are being made to preserve and showcase the culture.
From live performances to hands-on arts and crafts by the Ainu people themselves, this truly is a word class facility and well worth a visit!
Video and photography of the traditional performances is prohibited. But on our visit, we were extremely lucky to catch a rare outdoor sunset performance, in which spectators were invited to join in!
The audio is our actual recording from the performance. Note how it differs from traditional Japanese music.
Would you like to visit Upopoy on your Goneski adventure? Let us know! 🙏

❄THAT'S ALL FOLKS!❄
Our last Powder Tour of the season is done and dusted. With a record low snowfall for February, we were kept on our toes to deliver the goods!😥
Never the less, as always we watched the weather like a hawk, bending and tweeking the itinerary every day to always put our peeps in the right place at the right time!💪
As you can see, once again, we nailed it. Not only did we find the powder, we were skiing places with no one else around... Just saying😎
Skiing, eating, onsening, dancing, our last Powder Tour of the season was a slam dunk!🙌
🌿🌿RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE🌿🌿
The snow gods have gotten off to a slow start this season with the Sasa grass still poking through. Never the less, our first Goneski crew of the season nailed it, finding fresh turns every single day!🙌
Every morning we watched the weather closely, choosing the best resort of the day at the very last moment... in some cases just 15 minutes before we went out the door... flexibility, THAT'S the Goneski difference!😎
With Christmas fun at local resorts, midnight madness at the downtown shrine on news years eve, superb food and an absolutely amazing first crew, the first Goneski Tour of the season was a total success... Happy New Year everyone!
⛷🏂🇯🇵🙌❄❄❄

Father and son, young Lindon (50s) and young Tony (80s) charged hard to the bitter end on their 3rd Goneski Tour with us this year! They were rewarded with open slopes and fresh snow for their commitment💪
Our Powder Tours are now sold out, but we still have 3 spots left on our last Haru Yasumi Tour of the 2024 season.
Obviously we can never guarantee powder like this in March, but as you can see, miracles can happen!🤩
Now crowds, open slopes, good times!
Book your Haru Yasumi Tour with us today!🌸
All Goneski tours include a day to chill 😎
Why not take the time to explore Otaru's many old buildings. Some are over 100 years old and have amazing history! Many have now been converted into cafes, shops, and breweries... very cool! 😎

The beautiful, iconic Japanese Shinkansen. Maximum speed 300 km/h.💥
We have been off the radar for a few weeks, traveling Japan in style, visiting family.
If you ever get the chance, you should definitely try to include a little trip on the Shinkansen when you are in Japan, it is truly breathtaking!
🎉YEAH BABY, GONESKI'S BACK!!!🎉
After 2 years of being grounded for obvious reasons, we have just wrapped up our first tour of the long awaited 2022/23 season... and WOW, what a banger it was!💥
Big storms, bluebird powder days, and an amazing crew! Check out the raw phone footage edit we have put together of the trip.
Happy New Year everyone, all the best for 2023!🤙
And just like that, it was December!
It has become an annual event for us to mark this month by visiting the White Illumination festival in Sapporo. Large and interactive light displays are located in the middle of the city in Odori park. It was made even more magical with the first fresh snow of the season!
It coincides with a small German festival. Sapporo's sister city is Munich. You can buy German sausages, beer and hot glühwein, yum!
Wrapped up warm in your woolly hat, scarf, gloves and coat, enjoying the lights and the live music with a hot red wine... magic. Winter is here! ⛄
As we stand by for snow, we eat sushi served on Shinkansens...
Japanese life never gets old!👺
Here is our 88th Japan travel update...
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
📣THE 2023 GONSKI SEASON IS ALL GOOOOOO!!!📣
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
As predicted, September has delivered, and for the first time in 2 years we are happy to announce that finally, Goneski customers will be swimming in that glorious deep Japanese powder once again!
We have had a busy week chatting to all our customers, explaining the complicated and still quite restricted system, and, the best bit... locking them in and booking their flights!
But as mentioned, it is still tricky, and not all of our customers are going to be able to commit to the strict requirements. So at Goneski, we are calling this season the "transition season".
📣FOR EVERYONE NOT BOOKED WITH GONESKI...📣
We would like to share with you some steps you need to take to get to Japan for the coming ski season. We have acquired the following information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan and email conversations we have been having with the Japanese Embassy in Auckland, New Zealand...
1. Find a Japanese travel agency.
2. Book every with the agency, accommodation, flights ect.
3. The agency will then apply for a ERFS certificate for you and email it to you.
4. Apply for a travel visa (free) at your local Japanese embassy. For this you will need...
- ERFS certificate
- Booking confirmation
- Proof of payment
- Flight schedule
- Accommodation list/information
- Itinerary
- Travel agency contacts/details
Regarding Covid, You will need to show proof of 3x vaccination jabs. If you do not have this, you will need to show a negative Covid text result 72 hours before you leave.
So there we have it folks, we hope this helps! Remember, part of the above information comes from the Japanese embassy in New Zealand, so please double check with your own countries embassy if you live elsewhere🙇♂️
BEST OF LUCK EVERYONE!!!
❄🇯🇵❄🇯🇵❄🇯🇵❄🇯🇵
Here is our 87th Japan travel update. We will post these every Monday night or Tuesday morning Japan local time.
📣PROGRESS!📣
From tomorrow, people will be able to enter Japan if booked through a Japanese travel agency, and will no longer require a guide!
If you are from a "blue" country, you will not need to show proof of Covid vaccination, will not need to be tested on arrival, and will not need to quarantine on arrival!
These are huge leaps forward!
📣📣ATTENTION ALL BOOKED GONESKI CUSTOMER'S📣📣
We will be emailing all of you sometime later this week on what happens next for you. We are currently having meetings and working hard to make this happen, so keep fingers, toes, everything crossed for good news!
