Jessie on a Journey Adventurous solo travel blog sharing tips + resources for exploring the world . But I did. And on that note, how can I help you? Happy trails!
(13)

Have you ever felt like you weren't meant to do what you were *supposed to* do? Yea, that was me after graduating from the State University of New York at Albany with my BA/MA in Communication. It was 2011 -- before "travel blogging" was really a thing -- and my loved ones looked at me like I had three heads when I told them I wanted to skip the whole 9-to-5 thing in lieu of traveling the world so

lo and documenting it online. "But is that safe?"

"Women shouldn't be traveling on their own." "But what if the whole blogging thing doesn't work out?"

"Aren't you worried about meeting someone and settling down?"

These were just a few of the negative sentiments I had to tune out in order to make my dreams a reality. And today I travel the world -- mainly solo, sometimes with my husband Andy (because yes, even travelers can find love). I document these travels on my popular solo and adventure travel blog, Jessie on a Journey, which today serves as my full-time self-made career. Because yes, it is possible to do what many tell you is impossible :)

Jessie on a Journey offers an honest look into my adventures, advice, and detours. Whether you’re a solo traveler craving spontaneity, a wanderer in search of more than your typical sightseeing, or a blogger with dreams of making travel a profitable lifestyle, this is the destination for you to bring more meaning and fulfillment to your journey. Awaken your curiosity as I share real-talk and resources for exploring the world — and experiencing life — . I'd love to hear from you either here on Facebook or via email at [email protected].

Love kayaking? Try it with seals! 😍⬇️

A highlight of my solo Nova Scotia road trip was kayaking with Pleasant Paddling. 🛶

Setting off from Blue Rocks—a fishing village named for its rugged blue slate rock formations—we paddled past colorful fishing shacks, islands, coves, and evergreen forests. 🏝️

The highlight was seeing wildlife like seabirds and seals, who would pop their curious heads out of the water. We even saw one sunbathing! (2nd photo in the gallery) 🥰

Check out the gallery below👇 to see the spectacular scenery + adorable seal photos! 🦭

Anyone else love chasing sunrises when they travel? 🌅

I was so glad to wake up at White Point Beach Resort in Nova Scotia to see this spectacular scene—with waves crashing against the rocky shoreline and the sun casting a colorful glow over the sandy beach. 🏖️

The best part? I had the beach almost entirely to myself, one of the many perks of visiting Nova Scotia during shoulder season! 🤩

No, this isn’t the Caribbean...🏖️

It’s not Tahiti...🐚

It’s Zanzibar! Specifically Paje Beach, a white sand stretch featuring turquoise waters and winds perfect for kitesurfing. 🪁

🏨 Tip: If visiting, stay at Kisiwa on the Beach, a gorgeous all-villa property with incredible staff and amenities like a pool, spa, and delicious restaurant.

My favorite moment on safari in Tanzania 🐘⬇️

While in the Serengeti, our safari vehicle stopped by a hippo pool to watch the hippos...🦛
..when suddenly some surprise visitors arrived! It started with the little elephant you see in the reel, and slowly but surely the rest of the herd appeared! 😍

It was amazing seeing how they all interacted, the hippos laying their heads on each other while birds pecked ticks and parasites off their skin, and the elephants drinking water and splashing themselves with mud to cool down. 💦

Also, baby elephants. Need I say more?! 🥹

Hello from 2400 feet over the Serengeti 😍 ⬇️

I was on the fence about booking a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Serengeti National Park, but I'm SO GLAD I did it! 🎈

I’ve done a few hot air balloon rides in the past, but the experience with was extra special. See why in the video! 🤩

During the flight, you’ll not only take in amazing views of the landscape but also of the animals. I saw giraffes, zebra, hippos, hyenas, ostriches, and gazelles! 🦒

Have you ever done a hot air balloon ride? ✨

Why do giraffes have long necks? 🦒

Along with using their long necks to reach food high up in trees and spot predators in the distance, they also use them to show off and fight. 😮

Male giraffes sometimes swing their necks at each other in a kind of wrestling match, with the winner being able to show off how strong and healthy they are to potential mates. 💪

Speaking of, I was told by my guide that in the photos shown here, the male is actually trying to mate with the female. When they fight, the neck twisting is apparently a lot more aggressive, while here it was quite gentle. ❤️

Definitely feel thankful to have gotten to see these beauties in the wild! 😍

Highlights of Tanzania travel ✨

I’m just back from an amazing 2-week trip through Tanzania. Here were some of the highlights ⬇️

⛰️ Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest mountain!)
✨Tip: If you don’t have time to summit, do a day hike to Mandara Hut at 9k feet

🦁 Seeing the Big 5 (and more!) on safari
✨Tip: You won't regret a sunrise hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti

☕ Exploring local culture through a village visit
✨Tip: Rundugai Village is a must-visit. Make sure to try the banana beer there!

😍 Staying at hotels with a view
✨Tip: Gran Melia Arusha has an EPIC view of Mount Meru (Tanzania's second-tallest mountain!)

🏖️ Relaxing on white sand beach
✨Tip: I highly recommend staying at Kisiwa on the Beach on Paje Beach

Baboon pix that will make your heart melt 🥰

A major highlight of going on safari in Tanzania is getting to see wildlife in their natural habitat—including baboons! 🐒

We sat for at least 20 minutes watching this mama baboon care for her baby. It reminded me so much of human mothers, the way she held and snuggled her little one. ❤️

Of course, I was snapping away with my camera the entire time. See the gallery below ⬇️ for some of my favorite shots. 🥰

POV: Your Tanzania hotel view feels like a postcard come to life The 5-star 🤩

The Gran Meliá Arusha in Tanzania has one of the BEST views I’ve ever seen. ✨

The top photo with the imposing Mount Meru—Tanzania’s second-tallest mountain—front and center was taken from a random balcony on my floor. ⛰️

The others were taken more toward sunset from the hotel's rooftop bar. 🌇

The views aren’t the only reason to visit though. Other highlights include lush grounds centered by a pool, a spa with free sauna & steam room for guests, cultural experiences like cooking and weaving classes, and more! 🥳

Serengeti photo dump 😍 (warning: amazing animals ahead!)

Encompassing 5,700 square miles, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a must if you’re looking to view wildlife in their natural habitat. 🦓

Known for its high concentrations of large mammal species—including what is believed to be the highest concentration of lions in Africa—you will easily see loads of wildlife. 🦁

Lion prides, feasting hyenas, playful baboons, fighting impalas, hungry giraffes, and long lines of zebras and wildebeests left behind in the Great Migration were just a few sights. 🦒

A main highlight was stopping by a pool full of hippos and seeing a herd of elephants come down to drink. We stayed there for 30 minutes just watching life in the Serengeti unfold. 🦛

Check out the gallery below for a look at some of my favorite shots from the Serengeti. What is your favorite destination for wildlife? 🐒

6 reasons Kyrgyzstan should be your next trip 🇰🇬

Over the last few weeks, I’ve posted about some amazing places in Kyrgyzstan. Now, let me share some of the main reasons you should consider visiting ⬇️

😍 Whether it’s snow-capped peaks, colorful mountains, glittering lakes, or gushing waterfalls, you’re rarely without a gorgeous natural view—even while driving!

⛰️ If you love adventure, it’s the perfect place for trekking, horseback riding/trekking, skiing, and more. Just note: you’ll want to train for the hiking here, as it’s high altitude.

🛖 While the number of tourists is increasing, it’s still relatively undiscovered by tourism, meaning you can have a more authentic experience.

🚶‍♀️ While you should exercise increased caution near the border areas of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan is safe to travel. Personally, as a female traveler, I never felt unsafe!

☕ The hospitality is amazing. At every yurt and guesthouse stay, I was welcomed with hot tea and a huge spread of cookies, candies, bread, jams, and butters.

💸 Many travelers will find Kyrgyzstan to be budget-friendly. For instance, outside of the bigger cities, and I paid about $20-$35 each for a stay at a guesthouse or yurt including breakfast and dinner. On the higher end, a 4-star hotel in the capital cost $72 per night.

Have you ever thought about visiting Kyrgyzstan? ✈️

Funky hotel in LA (highly recommended!) ✨

During a trip to LA, I stayed at the hip Kinney Venice Beach Hotel in the city's Venice Beach neighborhood. 🏖️

The property is full of Instagram-worthy art and design touches— 🎨
from a “wanderlust” wall with a globe to giant colorful murals throughout the hallways. 🌎

My room was super bright and fun with colorful paint-splattered walls, neon orange-accented phones, and nightstands covered in comic strips. 🛏️

Also, their outdoor spaces feature numerous amenities like an onsite pool and whirlpool bath, a fire pit, hammocks, lounge chairs, ping pong, and more. 🌴

Check out the gallery below ⬇️ for some shots from around the property. 📸
