Jessie on a Journey Adventurous solo travel blog sharing tips + resources for exploring the world . But I did. And on that note, how can I help you? Happy trails!

Have you ever felt like you weren't meant to do what you were *supposed to* do? Yea, that was me after graduating from the State University of New York at Albany with my BA/MA in Communication. It was 2011 -- before "travel blogging" was really a thing -- and my loved ones looked at me like I had three heads when I told them I wanted to skip the whole 9-to-5 thing in lieu of traveling the world so

lo and documenting it online. "But is that safe?"

"Women shouldn't be traveling on their own." "But what if the whole blogging thing doesn't work out?"

"Aren't you worried about meeting someone and settling down?"

These were just a few of the negative sentiments I had to tune out in order to make my dreams a reality. And today I travel the world -- mainly solo, sometimes with my husband Andy (because yes, even travelers can find love). I document these travels on my popular solo and adventure travel blog, Jessie on a Journey, which today serves as my full-time self-made career. Because yes, it is possible to do what many tell you is impossible :)

Jessie on a Journey offers an honest look into my adventures, advice, and detours. Whether you’re a solo traveler craving spontaneity, a wanderer in search of more than your typical sightseeing, or a blogger with dreams of making travel a profitable lifestyle, this is the destination for you to bring more meaning and fulfillment to your journey. Awaken your curiosity as I share real-talk and resources for exploring the world — and experiencing life — . I'd love to hear from you either here on Facebook or via email at [email protected].

POV: Your Tanzania hotel view feels like a postcard come to life 🤩

The 5-star Gran Meliá Arusha in Tanzania has one of the BEST views I’ve ever seen. ✨

This view of the imposing Mount Meru—Tanzania’s second-tallest mountain—front and center was taken from a random balcony on my floor. ⛰️

You can also get incredible views from the hotel rooftop, particularly at sunset. 🌇

The views aren’t the only reason to visit though. Other highlights include lush grounds centered by a pool, a spa with free sauna & steam room for guests, cultural experiences like cooking and weaving classes, and more! 🥳

What is your favorite hotel with a view? 😍

(Now that I know what it is, I can honestly say I also enjoy this type of travel.)

Did you hear? Gen Z has replaced Millennials as the "it" generation, and is relishing in upending every convention: from ankle socks and punctuality to conventional good looks.

CROWDSOURCING 👉 So one destination on my radar for 2025 is Albania. 🇦🇱

I'm particularly interested in hiking/outdoors and culture. Does anyone have any recommendations? 🏔

I'd love all suggestions for where to go, best trails, recommended guides/companies, cultural experiences, and anything else. 🙏

Travel partner horror stories 😱

Found a post from my backpacking days about my WORST experiences traveling with "friends" (aka people I met on old-school travel forums) that made me laugh. 😂🤭😳

I'm so used to traveling solo or with my husband that I almost forgot how hard it can be to find travel partners that match your style.

(And don't flip out on you for going outside to read your book. 😅)

Anyone else have any travel partner horror stories? ✈️

Showing my NYC Photo Journeys guests the beauty of NYC covered in snow. ❄️

It's so hard to time, but when it happens, it's magical. ✨

(Side note: I always think it's funny how people flock to DUMBO to get that one shot on Washington Street. The street is absolutely PACKED with people every day of the week, but the neighborhood has loads of quieter and, in my opinion, more beautiful shots to be had.) 📸

2024 travel experiences I’ll cherish forever. 🌎❤️⬇️

Like many, I enjoy closing out the year by looking back on some of the moments—and trips—that made me grateful. 🙏

While 2024 had its rough patches, I’m so thankful to have gotten to: 👇

🏖️Beach hop, kayak & cenote swim in Isla Holbox with my blogging besties &

🥾Enjoy high-altitude hiking, yurt homestays & some of the best views of my life in Kyrgyzstan

🦓 Go on safari, a sunrise Serengeti hot air balloon ride & and community cultural visits in Tanzania

🏄 Solo road trip through Nova Scotia to enjoy hiking, kayaking & surfing (& driving for the first time in years—I feel confident now to do another solo road trip in 2025!)

⛰️ Continue conquering Upstate New York peaks with (like St. Regis Mountain) & exploring my home of NYC with eyes full of curiosity (latest finds: burlesque fun at Cocktail Magique with , gorgeous views from & amazing storytelling at on Broadway)

My goals for 2025: take fewer but more intentional trips & continue making memories I’ll cherish forever ❤️

Don't look down 😅 ⬇️

Flashback to the time I hiked up Mount Agung—an active volcano & the highest point on Bali at 9,888 feet—and watched the sunrise over the island. 😮

I had to start hiking at 11pm the night before, and I genuinely thought all of my toes were broken by the end, but oh the view from above the clouds! 😍

To date, it is the most epic (albeit slightly terrifying) hike I've ever done. I'm definitely hoping to go on more adventures like this in 2025! ⛰️

What trips do you have your sights on for the new year? ✨

Christmas bars in NYC 🎄

After my post last week about NYC holiday experiences, I had a bunch of people ask about *Christmas bars* specifically. So, here are some of the best: 👇

🎅 Lillie's Victorian Establishment is a sit-down restaurant with excellent cocktails (including an array of Old Fashioneds) and yummy food - and of course ornate decor!

🎅 Oscar Wilde and Papillon Bistro are sister restaurants of Lillie's and also feature over-the-top decorations

🎅 Bua Thai also has beautiful holiday decorations and is easier to get a reservation at than the above eateries

🎅 Lotte New York Palace features a seasonal Winter Bar in their decorated courtyard - complete with giant Christmas tree. Hennesy Hot Toddy, anyone?

🎅 Rolf's is the OG Christmas bar in NYC, with thousands of lights, ornaments & icicles strung up (though note it's hard to get in)

🎅 Want a view over the Brooklyn Bridge? Head to Jingle Jangle on top of the Rooftop at Pier 17 or Santa's Winter Wonderland pop-up on top of The Watermark waterfront eatery

🎅 Miracle on 9th, Frosty's, Sleyenda, and Blitzen's Bar at the Omni Berkshire Place are a few pop-up holiday bars worth checking out

🎅 Love the macabre? Someday Bar is hosting Krampus' Cove - imagine black Christmas trees adorned with doll heads, skulls, and skeletons, alongside other haunting decor. 🍸

Note: Some of these require tickets, and, if possible, it's *always* recommended to make a reservation. If you can go on weekdays or non-peak hours, that can help with the crowds too! 😁

What are your favorite NYC Christmas bars? 🤶

Showing my NYC Photo Journeys guest the beauty of Central Park in winter. 📸

Also, for all of you "Home Alone" fans, see The Plaza Hotel in the background? 😮

The park is 843 acres, so this is just one of MANY views to enjoy. 🍂

Epic NYC view (for free!) 😍⬇️

If you're visiting New York and want a gorgeous view without the crowds, head to the rooftop park at Pier 57. The last few times I went in the early morning I had the place all to myself. 😎

After enjoying the beauty, head downstairs to Market 57 for a specialty coffee from Bird & Branch, a beer from Harlem Hops, a sandwich from Due Madri, or something tasty from one of the other local vendors. ☕

📸 ps. I still have available slots for December/holiday photoshoots. Info/calendar here 👉 https://nycphotojourneys.com/professional-photoshoot-in-nyc/

Rockefeller isn't the only place that has holiday trees in NYC. In fact, there are tons of other options - without the crowds! 🎄

I love taking my guests to see the holiday decorations around New York City - though some (eh hem Rockefeller Center) are way more crowded than others. 😅

Pictured here is one of my guests at the holiday tree in their courtyard (one of my favorites!). 😍

Additionally, between 50th and 59th Streets along 5th and 6th Avenues, you'll find loads of holiday trees and decorations like giant ornaments, gift boxes, and toy soldiers. 🎁

Outside of Midtown, don't miss the gorgeous Wall Street Christmas Tree as well as the 2M+ lights and decorations at Hudson Yards. 😍

By the way, if you're looking for a festive photo experience, make sure to book your Private Photo Journey or Professional Photoshoot before the new year! 📸

This isn't your typical Nutcracker 😉👯⬇️

Looking for a unique way to celebrate the holidays in NYC? Don't miss The Nutcracker Rouge by Company XIV - the burlesque version of The Nutcracker! 😮

The experience begins when you enter the theater, which transports you to the 1920s with the decor & speakeasy bar. Many people in the audience even dress up in period costumes. 🍸

The show itself tells the classic story of The Nutcracker through burlesque, singing, and circus acts for a more edgy interpretation. (Note that the video shown here is of their 2023 production). 🩰

Want more unique holiday shows? Check out ➡️ A Very SW!NG OUT Holiday at The Joyce Theater, The Hard Nut at BAM, The Drunk Texts at The Rat, Elf on Broadway, and a few different drag-style Holiday Spectacular shows at Lips. 🎄

NYC holiday fun (without the crowds) 🎄

While NYC has loads of holiday attractions, many are SO CROWDED. Luckily, not all are. A few of my top picks ⬇️

🍸 Jingle Jangle Rooftop Bar & Ice Rink. Along with a festive Christmas bar with delicious holiday cocktails from The Dead Rabbit, there is an outdoor ice rink offering gorgeous views of the Brooklyn Bridge from the Rooftop at Pier 17.

🧚‍♀️ Nutcracker Rouge. This sexy holiday show by Company XIV tells the classic story through burlesque, singing & circus acts in a 1920s-themed space.

🎄 Lotte New York Palace holiday courtyard & Christmas tree ⬅️ There are actually loads of holiday trees beyond Rockefeller Center. Just wander the avenues (especially in Midtown Manhattan) and you'll see them along the sidewalks and in shops, banks, etc.

✨ Tianyu Lights Festival at CitiField. I love these types of outdoor light & installation festivals as even if there are lots of people you'll still have space to move around.

🎁 Tip: I also love the Bryant Park holiday market, but it gets crowded. Try to visit on weekday mornings as early in December as possible.

What are your favorite NYC holiday attractions? 🎅

FLASHBACK to my carefree hostel days (which were also clearly before I knew how to use a camera). 🤣

This photo was taken during one of the BEST TRIPS OF MY LIFE, during a night spent at the Mountain Hostel Gimmelwald in Switzerland - which is quite literally located above the clouds. 😶‍🌫️

I'm not sure what the small remote village of Gimmelwald is like now, but when I visited there were no restaurants or museums, and the main attractions were hiking in the mountains and walking over to Erica - aka the “egg and cheese lady" - to hangout in her cheese shed and taste some local dairy. 🧀

And, of course, meeting other travelers in the hostel common room to drink wine, eat cheese, play games, and share stories from the road. 🍷

Nobody had a laptop or smartphone. There was no Instagram. And nobody cared about snapping the perfect footage for social media. 📸

We were all just there as travelers existing, connecting, and relishing in the beauty of the place we were in. 🥰

If you couldn't tell, I miss these times. ❤️ How about you?
