Fifty years ago when North Tarrytown, today’s Sleepy Hollow, celebrated its centennial there was a series of commemorative plates issued. This one is of the Old Dutch Church, which features prominently in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The reverse shows the weather vane on top of the church, bearing the initials of the lord of Philipsburg Manor.

For the 150th this year what do you think the Village should issue in commemoration?

It is winter again in Sleepy Hollow! This is the family lot of Fred and Otto Boock in A century ago a day like today would have had local bobsled teams racing down Wildey and Cortlandt Streets and maybe Gould hill at the south end of Tarrytown. The Boocks were reigning local champs. Fred’s sled ‘999’ was almost always a winner by a wide margin. Otto ran respectably with ‘Blitzen’ and ‘Arrow’.

As recently as 1974 Fred’s sled was still intact in a basement on Hunter Avenue in North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow). Let us know in the comments if anyone knows where the sled is now!

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Tonight one team will walk away with an iconic 6.7 pound silver trophy by . No matter who wins, here in Sleepy Hollow we always raise a toast to that Giant of a man, Oscar Riedener, Tiffany’s design Chief who was tasked with creating the original concept in 1966.

Riedener lived at the time on South Cottenet Street in Irvington, NY, less than a mile as the Raven flies from the home of Washington Irving.

The Switzerland native had a Bear of a problem—he knew nothing of the game. As a first step he stopped by FAO Schwartz to buy a football.

Legend has it the next morning Riedener set the ball next to his bowl of cornflakes. Inspired, he took a pair of scissors to the cornflake box, transforming it into a three-sided stand for the football. An icon was born.

History and tradition come together in New York’s cider country. Recorded references to fermented ciders date to the time of Julius Caesar. Here in NY State it is one of our earliest beverages, produced continuously from colonial times through today. The Hudson River Valley is the country’s premier producer of small batch ciders and has this beautiful cup combines Westchester County apples with Orange County (NY) black dirt beets.

Mark Clearview & Nick Wallace bring their conjurings to Sleepy Hollow this October. Have you booked your tickets to Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country?

We observed them closely during a secretive session a few weeks back. As fans of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, we know a thing or two about sleight of hand. And we know about psychic slate writing. Actually we know a lot about spirit writing of all varieties because Sleepy Hollow has been home to prominent practitioners of spirit writing. Stay tuned for that post…

Back to the Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country. Be prepared to be amazed in the historic barn at Philipsburg Manor.

We often get asked about places to see the headless horseman so we figured we would highlight one of those events.

Irving’s Legend at Washington Irving’s home, Sunnyside, is a rollicking performance by the Hudson Valley’s master storyteller Jonathan Kruk. This is one of the “must do” events during spooky season in Sleepy Hollow. Jonathan’s performances are riveting as he builds toward the climactic point in The Legend when…well we don’t want spoil the surprise!

We liked our original bistro mug so much we did another! With October right around the corner we live on caffeine and the 15 ounces this holds is just right for our first cup of the morning. Or two. Don’t judge.

Like our original this has a white and orange horseman and pumpkin on the front with an orange interior.

Ever looked out at our beautiful Hudson River and thought you saw a fantastical creature? In celebration of National Sea Serpent Day, we dug back through our archives to August 1896 when a sea serpent repeatedly visited the Nyack waterfront across the river from Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. The creature was seen by multiple witnesses over the course of the summer, and even appeared the following January, poking its head through a hole on the winter ice!

Whether you attend one of the free waterfront concerts this week or watch the sunset from , or keep a lookout for strange creatures!

The Armour-Stiner Octagon House, one of our most colorful historic houses has long been rumored to have a resident ghost. Actually, two ghosts. Both apparitions were made famous by previous owners of the house, writer Carl Carmer and his wife the artist and photographer Elizabeth Black. The first ghost takes the form of the fragrance of lilacs or heliotrope, and by the Carmer’s description followed them to Irvington from their brownstone on 12th Street in Greenwich Village. The second ghost is the figure of a young woman dressed all in white who met a tragic death while trying to elope with her lover. For the full article click the link in our bio and then click “Ghosts of Octagon House” or use link https://sleepyhollowcountry.com/ghosts-of-the-octagon-house/

The house’s current owners host two guided tours that highlight the apparitions. "Myths & Mysteries" Guided Tour runs in September and October. "The Lady in White" Interactive Tour & Performance runs October weekends. Reserve tickets at or https://www.armourstiner.com
