A journalist aboard the flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta said the aircraft lacked air conditioning and passengers sat on the tarmac for four hours.
After an incredible trip to Australia and New Zealand, I'm back home safe and sound. I did a little math on our travel data, and I'm a little blown away from what it took to navigate our way around.
The first slide is only the flights, and the second is the rest of our modes of transportation.
I think you'll agree with me that those countries are far, far, far away!!!
Some Interesting things:
🚅Melbourne is very proud of its free tram system around the CBD. I loved it because it's free!!!
🚊They have a trolley and it's old school and also free. We had a mechanical problem in ours so we kinda sat around for 30-minutes while it was sorted. This is good as a hop-on/hop-off to get your baring of the city.
🚦Melbourne is trying to reduce car use in CBD so it is frustrating drivers by shortening the "Go" traffic lights especially if you need to turn. Good thing that the CBD is walkable.
Felt very safe both day and night.
Sydney: Very walkable. Used the hop-on/hop-off bus to get my baring and learn some history about the city.
✈️We had the most issues at the airport here: 2 flight delays, canceled and rebooted flight, and a ticket that could not be located. That said there are so many flights in and out of here that they just put you on what's available next.
New Zealand/Auckland: Very walkable CBD. The have commuter buses. There's also a system of ferries to move around the islands. However, I was most struck by the lack of transportation infrastructure (trains or buses) for day trips other than tour companies.
🚗I'd recommend getting a rental car to get around because the most interesting thinhs/activities are outside of Auckland.

It's important to acknowledge that not everyone has a positive relationship with their mother or is able to celebrate Mother's Day in the traditional sense. Being mindful of others' experiences and feelings can help create a more inclusive and understanding environment for everyone.

Banned Books Week just ended.
🚩The American Library Association tracked 729 challenges to library, school, and university materials and services in 2021. Of the 1,597 individual books that were challenged or banned in 2021.
🚩A majority of the bans feature books written by authors who are people of color, LGBTQ+, Black, and Indigenous, and feature characters from marginalized groups. In at least one school district, even President Barack Obama's biography is among the banned books.
🚩States with the most aggressive book bans include Texas with 713 bans, Pennsylvania with 456 bans, and Florida with 204 bans.

Reposting Anna Murray Douglass (1813 - 1882) was an abolitionist and member of the Underground Railroad. She was the first wife of Frederick Douglass, married from 1838 until her death in 1882.
This time of year, many people share Frederick Douglass’s famous speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Frederick Douglass often overshadows Anna, despite her own abolitionist work and her active role in freeing her husband from enslavement.
Anna Murray was born with free status in Denton, Maryland in 1813. As a young woman, Anna acquired official Certificates of Freedom, enabling her to travel freely in the state, and established herself as a laundress and domestic worker, saving money from her work.
From the moment she met Frederick Douglass, Anna supported him, making his freedom and his subsequent abolitionist work possible. Frederick escaped to New York City wearing the disguise of a sailor that Anna has sewn for him, likely also using her money to buy his train ticket north. Once Anna joined him, she used her resources to provide for the couple’s new life together, setting up their home with a feather bed, pillows, and linen; dishes and cutlery; and a trunk of clothing.
Anna cared for their five children and the household while Frederick traveled for his abolitionist work. Left alone to support the family, Anna saved everything that Frederick sent home and used only her own income from mending shoes to survive.
When the family moved to Rochester, they hosted countless guests and hid runaways as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Now, Anna additionally provided for her guests and worked on the Underground all while raising her children and maintaining the household — and being scrutinized by some of Frederick’s white guests.
As Anna and Frederick’s daughter Rosetta said in a speech in 1900, “The story of Frederick Douglass’ hopes and aspirations and longing desire for freedom has been told—you all know it. It was a story made possible by the unswerving loyalty of Anna Murray.”
