Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On June 6th, 1944, forces from Canada and other Allied nations stormed the beaches of Normandy during an operation code-named: "Overlord." At the time, the operation was considered the largest naval, air, and land military operation in history.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the Point Ellice Bridge Disaster that occurred in 1896. The tragedy occurred when a streetcar overburdened with people plunged through the planks of the Point Ellice bridge. Today, swaying globes of light are sometimes seen beneath the Bay Street bridge, an echo of families searching for their lost loved ones.

The Douglas family home once stood where the Royal BC Museum is located today. With multiple generations living (and dying) in such close quarters, it's no surprise that paranormal occurences are frequent in this neighbourhood.

Did you see the aurora borealis on Friday night? What a treat! However, the beautiful solar storm can make a mess of things down here on earth, especially when it comes to communications. This Daily Colonist newspaper clipping tells us that the aurora borealis that occurred in October, 1919 caused several issues in Canada and the United States; not to mention a complete blackout of all radio and cable contact in Europe!

May 5. Chinese Cemetery

This tour coincides with the beginning of Asian Heritage Month in Canada. For two decades, former city councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe has provided the fascinating history of this national historic site and recounted the lives of many who are buried here, including her own grandfather. She will also feature the recently refurbished heritage interpretation panels that she arranged to have installed.

The tour begins at 2pm. Meet at the Chinese Cemetery, at the foot of Crescent Road below King George Terrace. Cost is $2 for OCS members or $5 for non-members. Cash only please.
