El tratamiento conocido como liberacion CCSVI se basa en la hipótesis desarrollada por el cirujano vascular Italiano Paolo Zamboni, cuya investigación sobre la esclerosis múltiple señaló que CCSVI podría ser una de las causas de los síntomas y una consecuencia de esta enfermedad.
CCSVI o Insuficiencia Venosa Cerebro Espinal Crónica, es una condición 
en la cual las venas yugulares y ácigos, que drenan la sangre desde el 
cerebro y la médula espinal se encuentran estrechadas, malformadas, bloqueadas o torcidas ocasionando un flujo sanguíneo insuficiente y por ello el exceso de hierro se deposita en el cerebro ocasionando las lesiones que se aprecian en la resonancia magnética.
Para constatar la hipotesis de que la condición CCSVI está relacionada de alguna forma con EM, el Dr. Zamboni creó el protocolo de un procedimiento de angioplastia o venoplastía que dilata o desbloquea las venas yugulares y ázygos con el fin de restaurar un adecuado flujo sangíneo y así reducir los síntomas y des-acelerar o detener el progreso de la enfermedad.
El procedimiento lo realiza el Dr. Rafael Moguel quien es un renombrado cardiólogo intervencionista mexicano de muchísima experiencia en Mexico, España y Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. El Dr. Moguel es el director de Clinics of the Heart, es jefe de cardiología del Hospital Costamed en Cozumel y Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico y pionero desde 2010 en tratamientos endovasculares de insuficiencia venosa cerebro espinal crónica (ccsvi) para aliviar o reducir los síntomas de la sclerosis múltiple.
El procedimiento (venoplastía) es considerado seguro y de bajo riesgo pero sobre todo se ha demostrado que es eficaz en la reducción de síntomas que afectan a personas que padecen de esclerosis múltiple. 
El procedimiento generalmente dura menos de 2 horas y se realiza bajo sedación ligera y anestético local para la inserción del catéter. Después del procedimiento que se realiza en la sala de hemodinámia del hospital Costamed los pacientes reposan bajo observación durante algunas horas y regresa a su hotel.
Los pacientes que viajan para recibir este tratamiento deberán acompañarse de un familiar o amigo y planear una estancia de 5 a 7 noches para recuperar energía y descansar bajo el cuidado y observación del personal médico del hospital.
Este tratamiento no es la cura de la esclerosis múltiple pero ha permitido a cientos de pacientes quienes han sido tratados una mucho mejor calidad de vida al reducir los síntomas sin fármacos y los efectos secundarios que muchos de estos ocasionan.

This message is for those of you who suffer from multiple sclerosis or are the caregivers of someone who does, this is not about a cure for this horrible disease because there is none. This is about a treatment that alleviates the awful symptoms it causes. This is not about expensive and non-effective pharmaceutical products that can have side effects worse than the symptoms themselves.

In addition to the information that was posted regarding the venoplasty procedure on a female Canadian patient who suffers from ALS who underwent the ccsvi procedure at The Clinics of the Heart. The procedure took place 75 days ago and the improvements are holding. We are trying to perform the procedure on 10 patients in order to evaluate the results with a larger test group, The cost is a nominal $2,000.00US that includes the hospital cathlab fee, medical fees and medical materials. The venoplasty treats (dilates) the jugular and azygous veins and is performed under sedation. We ask that interested patients and their caregivers allow 5-7 days in Cozumel as this permits Dr. Rafael Moguel to conduct pre and post procedure evaluations. The procedure takes place at the modern Costamed Hospital in Cozumel and it is outpatient so treated patients will be sleeping at the hotel of their choice, not in the hospital.
