Registan Square, often known as the cultural symbol of Samarkand city has always been the social centre of Samarkand. Despite the buildings in the current square being erected during the Timurid and Shaybanid eras, the history of the square dates back to earlier centuries. In old times, the people of Samarkand used to live in the Afrasiab hills. After the Arab invasion of Samarkand, people were relocated near the area currently called Registan Square. After people moved, they opened their stores, and stalls, and this square became a social center of the city. The name "Registan" means "sandy place". It is because there was a river in the area of current Registan Square and after it changed its direction, the place became a sandy area. During the Timurid era, a Hammam, a mosque, and a huge bazaar were constructed there. In the first half of the 15th century, Amir Timur's grandson Mirzo Ulugbek gave an order to construct a Madrasa which remained till today as the oldest construction in the square. However, during the Shaybanid era, Timurid constructions except Mirzo Ulugbek Madrasa were heavily damaged. Therefore, the emir of Samarkand Yalangtush Bahadur decided to build two more constructions - first Sherdor Madrasa and then Tillakori Madrasa/mosque. Make sure to visit Registan Square when you visit Samarkand.

The Hazrati Khizr Mosque was probably the first mosque in Samarkand. However, having stood for centuries, the mosque was destroyed by the Mongols, and the building you see today was reconstructed in the 19th century. It is located near the Shah-i Zinda and the Siab Bazaar. The Hazrati Khizr Mosque consists of a khanaka (a hostel for Sufis) and an avian. Now the mosque looks very bright and colourful, with shining tiles in different colours.
The first president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, was buried near the mosque.

Chorminor - Chor Minor means “four minarets” and this strange looking building looks like an upside-down chair. It was the gatehouse of a madrasa which has not survived. There are certainly no similar monuments in Uzbekistan but its unique architecture may have been inspired by the Char Minar in Hyderabad, India.

Khast Imam complex - The Khast Imam complex is located in the old part of Tashkent. It is a very popular place because one of the oldest Qurans in the world, the Uthman Quran, is stored there in the Moyie Mubarak Library. This Quran is thought to have belonged to Caliph Uthman and was brought
to Uzbekistan by Amir Timur in the late 14th century. Much of Tashkent was destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 1966 and had to be rebuilt. Construction of this complex was an
expensive undertaking: the sandalwood columns were brought from India, the green marble came from Turkey, and the blue tiles were made in Iran. This reminds us of the international ties of this visible new bastion of Islam. Next-door is the administrative centre of the M***i of Uzbekistan

Sitorai Mohi Khosa - In the 19th century the Emir of Bukhara, Nasrullah, gave an order to build a palace where he could remain cool in the summer heat. That palace did not survive to the present day, but after several decades Nasrullah’s grandson, Emir Alim Khan, built a new palace on the same site. A legend says that the palace was dedicated to his wife, Sitora. Its construction took several years. After the death of Sitora, it was named Sitorai Mohi Khosa (Moon-like Stars). In 1927, after the fall of the Emirate of Bukhara, the palace was transformed into museum.

According to its plan, the height of the minaret was supposed to be around 70-80 meters, the diameter of the minaret was adjusted to this plan. According to some historical sources, it was planned to be 110 meters. The construction started in 1852 and suddenly stopped in 1855 when the height of the minaret reached 29 meters. Historians believe that the construction was stopped due to the death of Muhammad Amin Khan in 1855. The minaret is a great example of Islamic art, it was decorated with glazed tiles.
