TAZARA, also known as Uhuru Railway, is a Railway line between Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Line was constructed between 1970 and 1975 by thousands of Tanzanian, Zambian, and Chinese workers.

One of the line's hardest (and most scenic) sections is between Mlimba and Makambako. This 158km mountainous section took one year to complete, building 46 bridges and blasting tunnels.

Of the 22* Tunnels along the TAZARA (all in Tanzania), 18 are located between Mlimba and Makambako.

* There is another tunnel at the Tunduma/Nakonde border crossing that is shared between the two countries.

Two Passenger Trains operate between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi – Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mkuba Express (Zambia).

The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority, also known as TAZARA, is a Railway line between Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Mukuba Express Train is Back... Let's go explore Africa through the Window Seat!

THE MUKUBA IS BACK IN TOWN

For more than 12 months, since October 2021, the stations south of Kasama, including the main stations like Mpika, Serenje, Mkushi and Kapiri-Mposhi, had not seen a blue and white millipede-like assembly of metal boxes. Until today, when the Mukuba Train once again rolled into the newest Railway Station in Kapiri-Mposhi (the only town with two railway stations in Zambia).

The arrival of the Mukuba Train at New Kapiri-Mposhi, was greeted with a euphoric mood, from children who had last seen a blue and white train a year ago and elders alike, mesmerised by both the excitement and relief that once again they can travel for some shopping to Nakonde and be back the following day (at minimal cost, we should add).

Every Friday, the Kisumu Safari Train goes to Kisumu from Nairobi and returns on Sunday with a stopover at Nakuru Railway station. The train always departs at 6:00 p.m.

An Economy Class ticket costs Ksh 600 and a First-Class ticket costs Ksh 2,000.

Tickets are on sale at Nairobi Central station, Nakuru railway station, and the New Kisumu railway station.

The Kisumu Safari Train (Night) stops at Kibera, Kikuyu, Longonot, Nakuru, Elburgon, Molo, Mau Summit, Londiani, Kipkelion, Fort Ternan, Muhoroni, Chemelil, and Miwani before arriving at the New Kisumu Train Station.

Other stations along the line include Dagoretti, Limuru, Uplands, Kijabe, Suswa, Naivasha, GilGil, Mbaruk, Nakuru Junction, Njoro, Turi, Kedowa, Tunnel, Koru, and Kibos.
