Things to do in the Deep South - Simons Town

Visit the 4000 African Penguins at Boulders Beach. You could even rent a kayak and visit them from the sea side.

Take a boat ride around Simon’s Bay to see the history of Simon's Town and the South African Navy.

Spend half a day enjoying the historical mile in Simon’s Town. See the preserved historic buildings; visit the Simon’s Town and Naval museums. Enjoy the waterfront with its interesting coffee bars, restaurants and shops offering local crafts.

Take a boat ride out to Seal Island where you can see 75 000 Cape Fur Seals, great white sharks, whales and dolphins.

Mainly in the winter months why not try the famouswhite shark cage diving?

You can see the Southern Right whalesfrom June to the end of November.

Offshore bird watching is another treat for birding enthusiasts. Take a boat 35 miles south of Cape Point to see the Albatrosses.
Relax on one of many beautiful, unspoilt beaches nearby.

Penguins @ Boulders Beach

Did you know? Simon’s Town is one of only 28 world sites where penguins are found.

Boulders Beach is home to the African Penguin or otherwise known as the JackAss Penguin. They are so called for the donkey-like braying sounds they make when on land. These adorable black and white creatures are just squawking to meet you!

The colony at Boulders Beach was started by the penguins themselves and has increased from a few individuals to a colony of over 1000 penguins.

Its definitely a must see and something to add to your bucket list.

Did you know? Hermanus may be a popular whale watching destination but Simons Town may just be the place you want to visit to encounter the majestic Southern Right Whales!

Every year from around August until late November, Southern right whales come into the bays across the Cape’s coastlines to breed and calve. You may catch a glimpse of one of these spectacular whales breaching out of the ocean along the False Bay coast, especially between Kalk Bay and Noordhoek, it is common to see whales in the bay. Hop on a boat at Simons Town harbour to encounter these gentle giants.

The blood moon lunar eclipse is here (and so is Mars) ... This total lunar eclipse is fully visible in South Africa.
(CNN)The longest total lunar eclipse of the century arrives Friday night, showcasing a blood moon for most of the Eastern Hemisphere. Coincidentally, Mars is also at its brightest, putting two bright red objects in our sky.The totality of this lunar eclipse will last about an hour and 43 minutes, but a partial eclipse before and after the total phase means the moon will spend nearly four hours crossing the Earth's shadow.Lunar eclipses can occur only during a full moon, and this one is extra special because it's also the blood moon. The moon will be in perfect alignment with the sun and Earth on Friday, with the moon on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun.
