located on a peninsula of solid marble bordering Lake General Carrera, a remote glacial lake that spans the Chile-Argentina border.

Formed by 6,000-plus years of waves washing up against calcium carbonate, the smooth, swirling blues of the cavern walls are a reflection of the lake’s azure waters, which change in intensity and hue, depending on water levels and time of year.

Located far from any road, the caves are accessible only by boat. Thirty minute tours are operated by a local company, weather and water conditions permitting.

Know Before You Go
There are ferries from Chile Chico that will take you to and through the Marble cave and its tunnels. The caves are based on a lake, and the only way to reach them is by ferry.

Kabini is a native of Wayanad, formed by the confluence of Panamaram and Mananthavady rivers in Wayanad. Farther Kabini flows eastward to join the Kaveri River and empties into the Bay of Bengal. One branch of the Panamaram river starts from Banasura Sagar reservoir and the other from Lakkidi hills.

Two kilometers from the confluence, Kabini forms the Kuruva Island a fairly large one with diverse flora and fauna. Kuruva Island is a nice spot to spend a day. Within another 20 km the river reaches the Kabini Resrvoir bordering Kerala and Karnataka. Before that Kalindi river in which the rivulet Papanashini near Tirunelly temple has merged, joins Kabani.

The backwaters of the Kabini reservoir recedes in summer forming grassy meadows. Then it becomes a haunt of wild life, specially elephants. The large lake, green landscape and the wild life makes the place very attractive.

Decks are being cleared for the launch of India’s eighth and Kerala’s first metro rail network in the state’s financial capital and nerve centre of Kochi. The first set of coaches arrived in the city last week and a test run will be conducted in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on January 23, top officials at Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

“We will take the train on the viaduct next month. The operational date, depending on clearance from safety commissioners, will be sometime in August-September. We hope to make at least the stretch between Aluva and Edapally operational by then,” said Reshmi CR, head of corporate communications at KMRL.

Built at a staggering cost of Rs 5,181 crore, the metro line will span 25 km from Aluva to Pettah across 22 stations, coursing through some of the busiest roads in the city. The metro is proposed to cut the average travel time for a commuter from nearly 2 hours now to just 40 minutes. The initial ridership is estimated to be 1.5 lakh passengers a day which will reportedly soar to 6 lakh by 2030.

Kochi was the first Tier-II city to be sanctioned a metro rail project by the Centre during the previous Manmohan Singh regime. After being elected to power in 2011, the Congress government in the state led by Ooommen Chandy has touted the completion of the project a prestige issue and as a testament to its commitment to build much-needed infrastructure in the state. Battled by graft and allegations of inefficiency, the Congress government would find the completion of the project heartening as the state goes for polls later this year.

The metro project, built on a PPP model between the Centre and state governments, has DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) as the implementing agency and E Sreedharan, the man who single-handedly conceived the Delhi metro, as the principal advisor to the DMRC. Although initial stages of the project involved intense wrangling between the state and DMRC, the issues were resolved after a change in management.

Officials at KMRL insisted that the role of Sreedharan, who hails from Kerala, managed to assuage the feelings of the people about the project. “Land acquisition was fast and smooth. People were happy that Sreedharan was on board. With him in the saddle, they knew the project would happen,” said Reshmi.

The coaches for the train were ‘made in India’ by Alstom, a French company, at the Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. The company is contracted to supply KMRL 25 standard gauge trains with three cars each with a capacity to carry 975 passengers. The trains are also equipped to be driver-less in future if required. KMRL’s consultant department worked in close tandem with Alstom India on the design of the coaches to give it a traditional and authentic look.

Officials said the coaches would be designed in light blue livery with depictions of Kerala’s art and culture on its sides. Six major stations will adopt themes that will incorporate the cultural imprints of the city as well as the state as it went through decades of colonial rule before Indian independence. For example, the station near Edapally will focus on the work and contributions of legendary Malayalam poet Changampuzha, who was born and raised here. In addition, the KMRL will also play out a running theme based on the preservation of Western Ghats, the mountain range critical to Kerala’s natural bounty.

As for the ticketing system, KMRL has entered into a PPP deal with Axis Bank Limited with a stipulation that the latter will undertake the entire investment for the Automatic Fare Collection system. Axis Bank will also pay an additional royalty of Rs 209 crore over the next ten years in this partnership. In return, the smart cards issued by KMRL will be co-branded with Axis Bank and can be used for cash-less transaction along with ticketing purposes.

“This smart card can be linked with any bank account of the user, in any Bank, including the Jan-Dhan Yojana,” said, Elias George, MD, KMRL in a statement.

But more than anything, KMRL hopes to use the metro project not just in solving the city’s traffic woes, but also as a grander platform for an integrated public transportation system that will link the city’s famed ferries and bus services.

“The integrated system will allow us to not be Delhi, where you have to resort to an odd-even rule. Within the system, we will have the Metro, KURTC buses and ferries all running on similar timetables so that traffic will be seamless across the city,” added Reshmi.

Ferries have long been a part of Kochi’s transportation grid with frequent services to nearby islands of Vypeen, Mattanchery, Bolghatty and Fort Kochi. The integration project, that got the sanction of the Centre, is ambitious in nature and aims to introduce air-conditioned and WiFi enabled modern ferries on popular routes. Estimated at a cost of Rs 741 crores, this project is proposed to get operationalised in 2019.

At a time when public transportation models are being overhauled to check for pollution norms, if governments can complete infrastructure projects such as these in time with minimum cost overload, it will go a long way in making our cities greener and healthy in the long term.

African lungfish, Protopterus annectens, can live in suspended animation, called aestivation, without food and water for three to five years. They wake up when water becomes available.

During suspended animation, animals are inactive for an extended period—they take in no food or water and make no urine or waste. They enter a state of torpor, slowing down the biological time in relation to the clock time.

Suspended animation has long fascinated scientists because of its great application potentials in fields ranging from medicine to space travel.

If suspended animation were possible in humans, surgeons would have more time to operate on patients during critical moments when blood circulation stops, and the dream of long-distance space travel could be realized.

Researchers led by Professor Ip Yuen Kwong from the biological sciences department at the National University of Singapore compared the differential gene expression in the liver of P. annectens after six months of suspended animation to a freshwater control. They also compared one day of arousal from six months of suspended animation to six months in that state.

The scientists discovered suspended animation among African lungfish in arid conditions at high temperature involves the up- and down-regulation of diverse cellular activities.

The results point to the importance of sustaining a low rate of waste production and conservation of energy storage during the maintenance phase, and the dependence on internal energy store for repair and structural modification during the arousal phase.

Kottukkal cave temple, also known as Kaltrikkovil in Malayalam, is an existing example of rock cut architecture, built between 6th and 8th centuries CE. It is situated in the village of Kottukkal, near Anchal, Kollam district, Kerala, India. The name Kottukkal (which means Kottiya Kallu- carved rock) is a reference to rock cut shrine. There are two caves of unequal size, both facing the east with the sculpture of main deity Ganapathy in between. The smaller cave has an idol of Hanuman and the larger one has a monolithic Nandi (bull) in it.[2] Lord Shiva is also a deity in the temple in the form of a Shiva Ling.

According to local traditions, the big rock was brought to the area by the incarnations of Shiva including Nandi to the area, and another small rock near to it called 'chummaadu para' is believed to be the support to relieve the pain when the bigger hard rock kept in head. Historians read its origin back to the 7th century AD when 'Nedila Paranthaka Nedumchadayan' who ruled Chadayamangalam the nearby place, made the rock cut temple. It is now situated in the centre of a large extent of paddy fields and daily rituals are done under Travancore Devaswom Board. The calmness and tranquility of the area attracts the travellers, and one can reach the spot travelling 45 kilometers from Kollam

If you are a nature enthusiast who is desperately pouring your head over volumes to get your much-needed information on Teak, the wonder tree, then the world famous Teak Museum at Nilambur is just the perfect place for you to be in. Here, you can satisfy yourself with loads of information on this magical bounty of nature.

The well-known Teak Museum is located at Nilambur in the Malappuram district of Kerala. Regarded as the first of its kind in the world and the only one in India; it is a house to the treasures of historical, aesthetic and scientific aspects of Teak. The museum was established on the campus of the sub-centre of Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in 1995. The museum was established here owing to the historical significance of the region. The world's first Teak (Tectona grandis) plantation was raised in Nilambur way back in the 1840s in order to ensure a steady supply of Teak timber to the British.

The fascinating abundance of information on this wonder tree attracts an entire horde of tourists to visit this museum throughout the year. The extensive root system of a 55-year-old teak tree exhibited in the portico for welcoming the tourists is itself metaphorical of the past, present and future of the museum.

The ground floor of the double-storied museum exhibits a translite of Kannimara Teak, the oldest naturally growing teak tree located at the Parambikulam wild-life sanctuary and the life-size replica of the trunk of the largest known teak tree growing in the Malayattoor forest division. Another translite of a giant tree present in the oldest teak plantation in the Conolly's Plot at Nilambur offers the visitors a glimpse into the teak plantation activities undertaken 160 years ago. Some of the other other attractions here are the traditional granary and a miniature model of sailing vessel called Uru made of teak wood.

Teak poles of varying sizes and qualities obtained during the process of 'Thinning' of teak plantations are also displayed along with the necessary details of standard classification of teak poles. The depiction of foliage, flowers, fruits and bark of the tree gives us a deeper insight in to the other characteristics of the teak. Here, one can also find the large stump of a 480-year-old teak tree brought from Nagarampara forest range in Kottayam division.

Detailed description on the flower, fruit and natural regeneration of teak as well as the prominent characteristics of these species of trees are exhibited in the first floor of the museum. In addition to this, the various methods of seed-grading, presowing treatment, preparation of teak stumps, vegetative propagation of teak and the different stages in the complete rotation cycle of teak from seed to mature tree are also on display.

Apart from teak, the mueusm also has a collection of over 300 butterflies, moths and insects found in teak plantations. Another exclusive section in the museum deals with the various physical disorders of teak, disease-causing insects and pests, plantation and other nursery diseases.

Some of the special attractions of the Teak Museum at Nilambur are a series of interesting paintings portraying tree felling operations, a collection of photographs on the phonological events of teak at different seasons, exhibits on traditional harvesting tools and wood samples of different ages from various parts of the world.

The portraits of great figures who had carved out milestones in the successful establishment of teak plantations as well as of those who had laid the foundations to the plantation forestry in India like H.V.Conolly, Chathu Menon and T.F.Bourdillion offer a strong perspective of a glorious era spanning a period of 150 years. This museum also has a world-class library on teak and a mini auditorium for audio-visual presentations.

The 800-metre long bio-resources nature trail on the museum campus is indeed, an interesting one. This nature trail passes through a heavy growth of shrubs, trees and bamboos. One can also find the different species of birds and reptiles here. There are 50 naturally grown tree species and 136 endangered and near-extinct tree species of the Western Ghats planted in this nature trail. About 58 species of birds, both resident and migratory, has been recorded in this area. A medicinal plant garden consisting of 150 species is also another attraction worth seeing.

Recently, the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) has started a curio centre in the Teak Museum.

Sima Humboldt (Sima Mayor) is an enormous sinkhole located on the summit of the plateau of Sarisariñama tepui in Bolívar State, Venezuela. It is unusual for several reasons, including its enormous size and depth, its location on the top of the only forested tepui, having a patch of forest on its base and also due to the weathering process that formed this sinkhole. The feature is named after scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt.

The sinkhole was descended for the first time in 1974 and more thoroughly explored in 1976. Its volume is 18,000,000 m3 (640,000,000 cu ft), whereas the maximum width at its upper rim is 352 m (1,155 ft) and 502 m (1,647 ft) below.

Gangkhar Puensum is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world located in Bhutan. This mountain have a height of 7570 meter and it is the 40th highest mountain the world. There are only four reported expedition took place in Gangkhar Puensum in 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1994 respectively. But all of those expeditions became unsuccessful because of heavy snowfall and unsustainable conditions.

Because of spiritual believes Bhutan government restricted mountaineering in Gangkhar Puensum in the year 2004. So Gangkhar Puensum mountain became unclimbed and unexplored.

The stone spheres (or stone balls) of Costa Rica are an assortment of over three hundred petrospheres in Costa Rica, located on the Diquís Delta and on Isla del Caño. Locally, they are known as Las Bolas (literally The Balls). The spheres are commonly attributed to the extinct Diquís culture and are sometimes referred to as the Diquís Spheres. They are the best-known stone sculptures of the Isthmo-Colombian area.

The Palmar Sur Archeological Excavations are a series of excavations of a site located in the southern portion of Costa Rica, known as the Diquís Delta. The excavations have centered on a site known as "Farm 6", dating back to the Aguas Buenas Period (300-800AD) and Chiriquí Period (800-1550 AD).

In June 2014, the Precolumbian Chiefdom Settlements with Stone Spheres of the Diquis was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Archaeo-tourism is a concept that is still relatively new in Costa Rica. To date, the national monument of Guayabo de Turrialba is primarily the only archaeological site open for tourism. Tourism on a smaller scale is occurring at the site of Farm 6 but is open to visitors on an appointment basis. Those interested in visiting the site should contact archaeologists at the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica to be put in touch with local guides in Palmar Sur. Future plans of the MNCR is to open the site to tourism on a larger scale and to include other sites nearby in the region.

Sailing stones, sliding rocks, and moving rocks all refer to a geological phenomenon where rocks move in long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or animal intervention. They have been recorded and studied in a number of places around Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, where the number and length of travel grooves are notable. The force behind their movement is not confirmed and is the subject of research. Some stones make linear turns others make oval turns while others create a wavy shape on their tracks. No one has ever seen them move and nobody knows the speed they move with. The mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley turn while they are sliding through the flat leveled valley and this leaves different tracks behind them. Some stones move further than others over two to five years.

The Navajo name for the peak, Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "rock with wings" or "winged rock", refers to the legend of the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present lands. The name "Shiprock" or Shiprock Peak or Ship Rock derives from the peak's resemblance to an enormous 19th-century clipper ship. Anglos first called the peak "The Needle", a name given to the topmost pinnacle by Captain J. F. McComb in 1860.Shiprock is composed of fractured volcanic breccia and black dikes of igneous rock called minette. It is the erosional remnant of the throat of a volcano, and the volcanic breccia formed in a diatreme. The exposed rock probably was originally formed 2,500–3000 feet (750–1,000 meters) below the Earth's surface, but it was exposed after millions of years of erosion. Wall-like sheets of minette, known as dikes, radiate away from the central formation. Radiometric age determinations of the minette establish that these volcanic rocks solidified about 27 million years ago. Shiprock is in the northeastern part of the Navajo Volcanic Field—a field that includes intrusions and flows of minette and other unusual igneous rocks that formed about 25 million years ago. Agathla (El Capitan) in Monument Valley, is another prominent volcanic neck in this volcanic field
