On November 24, 2009, 26-year-old John Edward Jones got stuck in Nutty Putty Cave and tragically passed away after being trapped for 27–28 hours. He and three others had left their group to explore The Birth Canal, a narrow passage with a turn at the end. However, John entered an unmapped passage, thinking it was the Canal, and found himself at a de@d end. He squeezed into a narrow vertical crack, assuming it was the turnaround, but became stuck upside-down. Despite a large rescue effort using a rope-and-pulley system, they couldn't free him. Eventually, he went into cardiac arrest from the strain caused by his position. After weighing the risks of further attempts, his family and the landowner decided to permanently seal the cave, and his body remains inside as a memorial. A movie called The Last Descent was made in 2016 about the incident.
