We are so proud and in awe of our friend & shepherd Janeise. In her own words she posts:
The finale to the completion of my weaving degree is this weekend. The program culminates with a grad show at the Folk Art Center in Asheville. All of the graduates in Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts program will have their work in the gallery from May until September, with the opening reception taking place this Saturday afternoon. The program has four focuses: wood, ceramics, metals, and fiber and there will be work from all of these mediums in the show.
My completed piece for this show is:
Rising and Setting of the Sun Variation
cotton, wool
105” x 32”
It’s a double-sided diptych that hangs freely in space and is viewable from both sides. The foundation cloth is double-weave overshot. This results in one side that is white dominant and one side that is black dominant, though not dramatically so. The color gradation transforms before your eyes as you look at the piece from different angles. It has been delightful to witness people slowly shifting their bodies and tilting their heads to experience the various intensities of the colors. To have my art described as “interactive” has been quite rewarding.
Arriving at this completed work has been an evolution and I think I am as pleased with the final product as I am with the journey it took to get here.
I’ll share more about the inspiration and process that went into this piece soon. I know some of you might like to hear that part.
