PANO / BLEND / TRACKED
Balcony over Sao Lourenco
Madeira, Portugal
After 3 years I finally managed to create this pano from Madeira! What you see here is not a cave but a cavity that, thanks to the fish eye lens, appears as a cave. The camera was propped against the rock wall, so I had to adjust the EXIF data and the focus point from the outside before positioning the camera. Then I started shooting; for each shot, I had to crawl into the cavity and rotate the camera. I took 6 vertical shots with the camera in a vertical position, thus obtaining the panorama for the landscape. Afterwards, I came out from the “cave,” mounted the star tracker on the tripod, and waited for the Milky Way to be in the right position. Then, with a 20mm lens, I took 6 vertical shots, creating the panorama for the sky.

STORY:
Arriving at this wonderful location in the middle of Tulove Grede, while searching for locations for night photography, i came across exceptional compositions that were only a few steps away from each other.
And here is the second of them, next to the already published cave.

A small hole between the rocks, which was filled with water, made sure that I could get some reflections during the night while taking pictures, and thus made the composition more unique.
To my great surprise, the stars in these look nice, pointy, despite the 90 second exposure. Of course, I also made extra shots for reflections with 30s exposure. But at the end it turned out that the longer 90-second shots were actually better.

In the background is the beautiful plateau of Tulove Grede, and the highest rocky peak of these.

In the sky we can see a core of the Milky Way with its characteristic reddish Nebulae. Above all, the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex - a multi-star system in the Ophiuchus constellation, which is considered to be one of the closest constellations to us living on Earth ( 360 light years ), and also the most colorful part of the visible sky, should be highlighted here.

The first thing that stands out when you see this photo is the shape of a key lock 🗝️
Instead it is a photo taken inside one of the towers of Rocca Calascio with a very wide angle and pointing the camera upwards where the tail of the Milky Way passed precisely and precisely the Cygnus region and its nebulae.
A particular shot that is different from the usual and from many other shots that you see in this famous location which is also not exactly easy to take.

Morning Glory Pool underneath the Milky Way. A shot I had been envisioning for a long time. I love Yellowstone at night. Most people are asleep at this time, but the park comes to life under the stars. Exploding geysers, shooting stars, wolfs howling, steam vents hissing and the faint smell of sulfer. Next time your in Yellowstone take a stroll at night. I loved this neat pink and green airglow on this particular night. I ended up staying up late shooting all over the park capturing this neat color in the sky.

Castlepoint Lighthouse is a prominent landmark located on the Wairarapa coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The lighthouse serves as a crucial navigation aid, guiding vessels along the perilous coastline. Its light can be seen for up to 26 nautical miles (48 kilometers) out to sea, providing a vital beacon for maritime safety.

The first time I tried to photograph the Milky Way behind this beautiful lighthouse, the weather didn’t cooperate, and I was only able to capture a short time-lapse 🙃. On my second attempt six months later, we were lucky enough to have a brief period without any clouds, allowing me to capture the stars and create this panorama at this magical location 🤩. Nevertheless, as the lighthouse and its bright light were quite a challenge to photograph, I don’t think that lighthouses will be the next motive 😄

Been a little while since I’ve been out anywhere, but I did manage to crawl out to a local spot a few weeks ago.

My first take from this spot was one of the images I feel really kick started my astrophotography, with it being one of the more technical images that I’d executed at the time. I never did finish the project that image was meant to be a part of, but at the time I was just stoked to get closer to the standard I was aiming for.

This trip was nothing terrifying, although I couldn’t relax fully- my clumsiness, dying torch, the incoming rising tide and local wildlife made sure of that. With that said, it was nice to just have something straightforward to shoot for once.

Missions like this have me itching to do more this winter, so hopefully I’ll get that this season.

From Marc about this image:

Timelapse + Motion = 🤯

I was leading a group in western Colorado under pristine skies when I captured this. Since I didn’t have time to really work with the scene, I set my camera on a tripod, dialed in settings and let it run. It’s always fun to capture the movement of the night skies (or Earth, really…) and play with that motion in the edit. I also find it so interesting that there is a significant amount of light pollution around the area this was shot, but being at nearly 11,000 feet in altitude positions it above the light dome resulting in much darker skies than you’d have in the same position, just a few thousand feet lower.

This was shot in Al Razeen, Abu Dhabi on the first weekend of June. As the milky way core was setting on the horizon, I took a selfie against the Rho Ophiuchi and Dark Horse Nebula. First I took a single shot of me in the foreground then immediately turned on the star tracker and took 7 consecutive photos for the sky. The weather was nice. Not so warm yet not so cold. And the sky was crystal clear with no haze. A perfect condition for Astrophotography.

Background Settings: ISO 3200. F1.8, SS 15”

I spent some time doing research to find this location as other photographers didn’t want to reveal it to me. Due to the fragility of these tufas the people from the park don’t want it to be a popular location either. It is a remote area where you need a 4x4 vehicle to get to. So I drove 5 and a half hours from LA to Mono lake, and then try to see how far I can get with my 2WD and then walked. I did some daytime exploration walking a lot until I finally found the location !!!
Then I walked back to my car and made a plan for getting there for the night. Due to some real estate photography gigs I did in the middle of the desert, I have some experience driving sandy roads with my 2WD, So figure that there was only 1 challenging spot I have to get trough. Around 30 to 50 ft long. So I spent sometime looking for dead dry branches to kind of pave those 50 ft of sandy road and give it a try. I spent about 1 hour doing that and then it worked really well. I managed to get my 2WD as close as I could. I walked to the shore to get some long exposure pictures of the tufas during the sunset to kill some time until the Milky Way showed up. When I walked back to the location there was another guy already set up at my desired location So I picked another tufa and took some pictures while the other photographer work on his. We had a great time chatting and sharing information.. After he was done I moved my camera to this tufa and started to work on my pictures..

Here I posted the natural version using only mild light painting and then one magenta color light painting and finally the astronaut. I hope you guys like them.

The Great Arch

Full Milkyway Arch at Tash Rabat

TRACKED BLENDED PANO

Capturing the full Milky Way arch is always at the top of my wishlist during astrophotography tours. On our latest trip to Kyrgyzstan, I achieved this goal at Tash Rabat on a beautiful, cloudless night. The resulting image showcases the entire valley of Tash Rabat along with the Milky Way arch, and you can even see the yurts where we stayed. Capturing a tracked Milky Way arch is always challenging. For this image, I captured six vertical sky panels, each with a 2-minute exposure, and did the same for the foreground.

Special thanks to Nikon Bengal - নিকন বেঙ্গল for providing the excellent 14-24 lens.

Shoutout to my fellow photographers for removing them from the entire foreground during the capture.

Trona Pinnacles were formed underwater thousands of years ago. At one point this area was under 640 feet of water. It consists of more than 500 tufa spires, some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the basin. They are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa).

Being here at night was quite a peaceful and magical experience as I got to hike up the spires seen in the foreground of this photo. This is a place where there are no roads or cell signals. Captured at around 1:30 am using an astro-modified Sony a7IV with 24mm lens. Modification performed by

STORY: This time a photo taken in a beautiful place in the Polish Tatra Mountains ⛰️⛰️⛰️ which is one of the most beautiful view point in which I have photographed so far❤️ ❤️ ❤️. The photo was taken in May this year, so it took me a while to find time to process it 😀😀😀 but I think it was worth it 😀😀😀. That night, the conditions in the sky were really great and I managed to register three meteors☄️☄️☄️ that add charm to this photo. I would say a magical place, although I admit that I was a little afraid of meeting a mountain teddy bear 🐻🐻🐻. I photographed at that night with one of my friend, but I think that in a confrontation with the teddy bear 🐻🐻🐻 even the three of us would have had no chance 😀😀😀. Fortunately, the story ended well, but to get to this place we had to walk a bit through the forest and the noise of the water meant that we would only see this teddy bear if it stood behind us 😀😀😀

During our shoot in Kutch, we found ourselves surrounded by an expansive, flat landscape dominated by a marshy saltwater body. Amidst this surreal scenery, I noticed that one of my travel mates had brought a drone, sparking a creative idea for a shot.
As the night transitioned towards the blue hour, the air filled with a gentle twilight. I asked one of my friends to stand on a piece of debris, creating a focal point amidst the vast openness. We attached a light to the drone and flew it in a repetitive graceful, circular motion above him, casting an ethereal glow.
Our first task was to capture the Milky Way, its stars twinkling brilliantly in the darkening sky. Carefully, we set the exposure, ensuring the tripod remained perfectly still. Once we had the Milky Way shot, we altered the exposure settings and captured the scene with the drone’s light tracing a mesmerizing path around our subject.
The result was a stunning image, blending the natural beauty of the night sky with the artistic light trails, creating a captivating and otherworldly photograph.

Reflecting the Milky Way in a mirror
Recently, I embarked on an unforgettable astrophotography adventure in the Fayoum Desert, one of Egypt’s best-kept secrets. Known for its vast, rolling sand dunes and serene landscapes, the Fayoum Desert offers an ideal backdrop for capturing the night sky in all its glory.

During this session, I used a unique technique involving a mirror to reflect the Milky Way, creating a stunning visual effect. Positioned on top of a sand dune, the mirror perfectly captured the galaxy, adding a surreal and enchanting element to the composition. In front of this cosmic reflection, I placed a friend, seated gracefully, to enhance the scene’s aesthetic and professional look.
The Fayoum Desert, located about 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo, is not only known for its breathtaking dunes but also for its clear, dark skies, which are perfect for stargazing and astrophotography. This region’s low light pollution allows the stars to shine brightly, making it a favorite spot for night sky photographers.

An incredibly beautiful region of the Eastern Sierras with its towering granite peaks - a remnant of what used to be identical to what is now the Cascade range and geothermal creeks with hot springs.

This area is home to dark skies and unpredictable weather, as I experienced on both of my trips this year.

We were fortunate to have enough breaks in the clouds on this peaceful moonless night. There’s so many things to see around here it’s almost overwhelming trying to decide which composition to shoot. I shot this foreground both in starlight and blue hour, as I was originally set on some long exposures and stacking the foreground. I opted for the blue hour foreground because of an airport that creates a light dome in front of the mountains in the distance and completely blows that portion of the frame out on long exposures.

Sunrise at the core of our Milky Way galaxy, over the sea near Stone Beach at Mount Easter.
After several consecutive days of rain, just at the peak of Easter, the sky cleared and I headed to my favorite Stone Beach. I managed to capture the sunrise at the core of the Milky Way over the sea near Stone Beach. A crystal clear atmosphere, no humidity, and relatively low temperature made capturing the night sky an experience. The colors and detail that I was able to capture with only 5 single frames of 10 seconds is mesmerizing when nature is on your side. Down in the sea you can see the beautiful leading innies, the current that was moving towards the South.

“Galactic missions are better with a little green sidekick & Mando 🌟🛡️

Much needed company for photographing in bear county & rattle snakes!
Was out testing Viltrox 16mm F1.& lens over weekend. And it is really sharp even at f1.8.
Went out for shooting at most photographed tree of Ontario. Moonset was around 1.47am so had to wait out for planned Panorama and tracked shots.
These are taken around 3.30am after planned shoot is done. Now was time for some fun stuff! Which has been in plan for a while & finally got super cool rocks for Mando & little sidekick baby yodha!

Memories from last year in La Palma. I’m actually reprocessing some of my old photos and it reminds me how good the sky was !

This time i tried to catch the milkyway above those famous observatories called MAGIC for Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov. I thought i could get closer to them but its not allowed so i tried to find a good view from the main road.

This image is a panorama of the sky in HARGB blended with the foreground. Can’t wait to go back then ( next year) so i’ll try to find a way to get way closer to the telescopes 👍

Enjoy the view and clear sky ✨

This was shot in April (2024) and was a composition I had thought about/planned since last year and it was not an easy one to achieve. That was mostly due to my (old) jenky tripod and how contorted the legs had to be on the uneven sandhill to get it at the right height and distance for this shot. It took a few tries to get all of the above right, as well as the lighting, but I got the foreground and bokeh star effect I was looking for. Hope you all dig it!
