August 8 marks the first anniversary of the Lahaina wildfire. Our August desktop calendar image shows Kaanapali Resort as seen from Wahikuli Beach Park. The resort was spared, but tragically, the Wahukuli neighborhood just above this beach park was not.

Many businesses across the island, including ours, will be closed on August 8th to spend time with our families and participate in community events.

JULY! This month's desktop calendar features one of nature's fireworks: the hibiscus flower. As a resident of Maui, it's easy to take them for granted as they are everywhere. 🌺 it's also my favorite emoji 🌺 Napili Kai resort is one of the best places to enjoy them with blooms the size of dinner plates! This photo was snapped at Kapalua Resort. The burst of red, the billowy white clouds, and the vivid blue sky reflect the colors in our country's flag in a way only the 50th state could 🌺

Flying Kapalua Airport to Kauai. All flights from JHM are bound for Honolulu. Inter island travel has changed a lot. Gone are the days flying across the channel to Kona - a visual treat over Haleakala. We will see parts of Molokai today which is a gorgeous island in its own right.

Since January, the US Army Corps of Engineers has performed debris removal of 1191 of 1339 residential properties with 681 residential lots being "returned" for permitting and for survivors to begin actual construction of new homes. Much more detail in this video. As we rapidly approach the 1st anniversary of the August 8 Wildfire, it's promising to see this progress. When families can return to their land and homes, the real healing can begin.

June's desktop calendar is inspired by a special community named Launiupoko. Nestled at the foot of the West Maui Mountains south of Lahaina, this neighborhood is a tranquil oasis of agricultural zoned home sites of at least an acre in size. While large, modern residences are being built recently, the properties built a decade or more ago retain their charm with large gardens, lush landscapes, (and even an animal sanctuary or two) The ocean views (and sunsets!) that can only come at 500 feet above sea level are incredible. Still, the view of the mountains steals the show. Launiupoko is a slice of paradise I'm blessed to experience and enjoy.

FIRST RE-BUILDING PERMIT ISSUED FOR FIRE SURVIVOR

The County issued the first building permit to a fire survivor on Friday. It was presented to friends of ours, Kari & Richard Alexander. Some of you may have donated to their GoFundMe campaign which we posted to our Give page in the weeks and months following the wildfire.

This is a much-needed boost to the fire survivors as we approach the 10-month mark after the disaster. It also gives hope to the community at large that the new vision for Lahaina Town is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Can you believe it will be May on Wednesday!? This month's desktop calendar features an image from my trip to the Keʻanae Peninsula two weeks ago. It is a small detour off the road to Hana that most people pass by. The banana bread fresh out of the oven from Aunty Sandyʻs and this view of the rugged East Maui coastline from under a coconut tree are worth the short trip. The black lava reminds us that Maui is made of not one, but two dormant volcanoes. Lava is the magic ingredient that created the Black Sand Beach at Waiʻanapanapa State Park. Another stop on the famous road to Hana you should not miss (but make advance reservations!)
