After hearing a buffalo calf being killed by hyenas yesterday early morning, Olchore and Kijana trekked several kms (within KasKaz territory) to investigate what all the commotion was about. After stealing the calf from the hyenas, Olchore was certainly not in the mood for sharing, not letting Kijana have a bite at all.

Unperturbed, Kijana ended up with his own plateful, after successfully killing a buffalo mother who was giving birth (several hundred metres away from Olchore). He got a cut or 2 from the buffalo takedown, nothing serious. After having a small bite to eat, Kijana retreated to the shade and we left for the day.

Upon returning this morning, KasKaz male Bron was sat closeby to Kijana and the buffalo carcass, while Olchore was sleeping in the lugga. Bron was acting and sounding submissive and looked like he could do with some food. When Kijana went to the nearby bushes mid-morning, Bron tucked in and we saw that since leaving Kijana after his hunt yesterday, he had developed a small limp. Bron has a facial cut and from the way he was walking, looked like he had a sore back half. Perhaps there was an earlier altercation of some sorts.

After Bron stepped back from the dinner table and with some more vultures landing, Kijana was not having any of that and chased the scavengers off. At the end of this afternoon’s drive, Bron clearly wanted more food and slowly started submissively approaching Kijana and Olchore at the carcass.

It’s not too unusual to have lions sharing food during lean seasons, we’ve seen it multiple times over the years such as:

- Kinyangaga boy Olosira + 4 Paradise boys + 5 Nasipa boys with their sister Nemunyak
- Spearboy + Enkuroto and Spikey
- Paradise pride females + 4 Nasipa boys
- Rongai pride with Oloimina + Mama Earless and Lormasi
- Siankiki, Enkanashe, Lekijana, Kijana + Olchore + Lormasi

Kijana and Bron waiting for each others move

20/02/2025

Black Rock lioness Kakenya’s son, Kijana, interupted a buffalo in labour earlier this morning.

He took advantage of her vulnerable position and after a stand off and various acrobats, including Kijana being tossed almost 360 in the air, he finally won this battle. If you zoom in, beware, you can see the calf’s legs hanging out of mum.

Olchore was busy eating another young buffalo he had stolen from the hyenas, so this time Kijana really worked hard for his nyama 🍗

For the past month or so, we’ve had quite a few sightings of the Rekeros who, when seen in the presence of male company, have been continuing to mate with the 6 packers.

2-3 weeks ago, after Chongo was treated, the 6 packers headed towards camp and Chongo, Koshoke, Kiok and Kibogoyo (after mating with some of the Paradise pride, including their daughters) had daily mating sessions across a week or so, mostly with Nelang’u, Nolerai, Mikunjo and occasionally Bear2.

Some of the girls are heavily pregnant and Noletira may have given birth recently as she was very milky last week. Those newborns should be Olchore/Kijana offspring, although any born in March onwards may not all be theirs given the 6 packers were also mating with the Rekeros back in the first half of November, so you never know which swimmers may have got through!

Each time we’ve seen Kijana and Olchore the past 2-3 weeks they’ve been further and further away from the Rekeros. There’s a good 20kms+ distance (as the crow flys) between the former Rekero pride males (today in key KasKaz territory) and the Rekeros (who crossed the Talek river a few days ago, possibly following the 6 pack as food that side of the river is scarce compared to Maji Eland outside camp which is always teaming with wildlife).

If the pair continue the direction they have, there aren’t too many more stops before Kijana and Olchore hit the Serengeti….there are a couple of big buffalo herds near them today though so hopefully they turn around and follow them for some nyama 🥩

Nagol (Halftail’s sister) and her (assumed) daughter both have cubs, Nagol has older ones. In total, the Purungat pride have 7 cubs of different shapes and sizes.

Last week they wanted to cross the Mara River to go see their baby daddies in the reserve (the Inselbergs) who were on a buffalo but they decided not to risk, probably because of the crocs in the water.

It’s always hard for prides towards the centre of the park to sustain themselves during the lean months (e.g Rekero, Lookout, Paradise, Purungat and others), so it’s wonderful to see them looking so great for this time of year, although there are still lean months to come.

Nagol’s daughter’s cubs should have some Muskies blood in them via Hunter2, Sikio2 and Ormagiliani and so Musketeers great grandkids! They are widely accepted to have been the fathers to the younger Purungat lionesses rather than the Ngiro Are boys who were also around and mating with the females (at least it was the Paradise boys who raised them to adulthood).

Olchore and Kijana had a very lazy morning, just love that bed hair on Kijana 🤩

They were far, far away from the Rekeros and nearer the Inselbergs, who have set up home at Lookout of late, and in another direction even nearer to Orkirikoi’s territory.

The 6 Rekero girls (Bear2, Bella, Mikunjo, Noletira, Nolerai and Nalang’u - in age order) with whom we spent sunrise, looked in good condition, walking from just outside camp to almost Rekero camp.

My Bella boo is so big she’s about to pop 😅

Manywele and his 3 brothers still had a way to get through this buff, and boy did it stink! As usual, the 4 Inselbergs were together, taking it in turns to come and eat as and when.

On this occasion it was Nusu who was mostly guarding the food from the (very few) scavengers - there are sadly hardly any at kills these days, sign of a struggling ecosystem.

It was Amini who was in charge of the Nasipa nursery yesterday while my stud, Kinyangaga boy Kishangaa, also ‘helped out’ ( = mostly sleeping and posing for endless clicks 📸 😅).

Amini is often hanging out with the youngsters from what I’ve noticed while watching the Nasipas over the years.

If the Inselbergs are indeed the fathers of the Kinyangaga boys, along with Olongama and the 7th member of the once 7-strong dispersing bachelor group, it would mean that lionesses like Mchumba Amani and Nenkume, amongst others, are romancing with their half siblings.

Something got KasKaz male Omokale’s attention earlier in the week. He kind of reminds me of Grimace and Floppy Left Ear although have no idea if Omokale is a near relation to them or not.

Last night, like many the world over, I fell asleep looking at pictures of and thinking about Lorkulup. It’s unfathomable he is gone. Maasai Mara and Kenya has lost yet another of its sparkling crown jewels.

Beneath the vast African sky at the Black Rocks, he was born into one of the 3 litters of July and August 2017.

Lorkulup was a majestic presence, known for his exceptional buffalo hunting and as a doting father, he led his beloved Rongai pride (Paradise Breakaways) with unwavering dignity, honour and care. His powerful roar echoed through the wilderness, a symbol of his untamed spirit, indomitable will and a reminder of his commanding presence. He was a protector and a loyal companion, touching the hearts of all who knew him.

Those who witnessed his graceful movements through the grasslands or his quiet moments in the shade will remember him as a creature both wild and noble. A true symbol of strength, grace and wisdom, we will forever remember him as both fierce and gentle.

His spirit will live on in the winds that sweep across the plains, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him and witness his grandeur. May his journey now be peaceful as he roams across the lion fields of gold with Olobor and Oloisiadu, far away from our human race, forever free in the eternal savanna.

Rest in peace sweet Lorkulup. You will always be cherished and never ever forgotten, just like those fallen before you.

Maji ma chafu girls Nne and Mbili have been mating solidly with all the Inselbergs the past week.

Often referred to as Lookout girls as they can be found at Lookout but their territory spans across the river to the Triangle. They are different to the different groups of Lookout girls btw and documented under Maji ma chafu pride per MPCP.
