Irene Wellm - Visual Artist I am an Australian artist painting in gouache on paper. I’m excited by nature, myths & fairytales.

Irene Wellm is drawn to the underworld journey, and to explore dark and ambiguous narratives in her art. Although our society gives the positive and bright aspects far more emphasis and attention, the darker journeys undeniably provide an invaluable source of riches, and these are expressed dramatically in her work. The ancients knew it as the Underworld, where the spirits dwelt. Today it is the i

nner, or psychological realm, where the creative activity is still uncanny and mysterious. The premise of the framework surrounding her art is to recognize religious and mythological concepts as symbolic, and interpret them psychologically. In doing so, it may indicate a subjective state, a psychological attitude, rather than an external/physiological one. In this vein, myth, like fairy tales, is understood as representing stages of consciousness, or psychological development. Within this framework, Wellm creates multi-layered narratives about recovering the feminine principle in a self-reflective way.

Some new work from this year.
Apologies for the absence from this page, times have changed my practice a lot and I haven’t done a lot of social media.
But I am always thinking about ways to bring my work forward and into authenticity. This is important to me. It’s a long path and I have been on it for 40 years. I am still questioning everything.

These works are gouache paintings, using brushes, on large sheets of heavy watercolour paper. No titles as yet. The one with the eagle is still in progress.

Thanks for reading
Irene 🙂

Flashback to March 2020, at 45 Downstairs from a group show with Janice Gobey and Naomi Bishop. This is a reconfiguration of an earlier wall work from Tacit Galleries. That’s the beauty of wall collage. Hope to get around to another one sometime in the future. This work is almost 3 metres high and 8 metres wide.
