Alvaro's Adventures Fantastic birding trips, where context, culture and food are as important as the birds. Bhutan, Chile, Galapagos, South Africa, and more.

Alvaro's Adventures provides birding and nature tours with an emphasis on a rich enjoyment of nature, with experienced guides. We love to dabble in local culture, great food, nice wine and beers, and while we are serious about birds and travel - we don't take ourselves too seriously. Learn, enjoy, bird, relax!

Haneda airport. Little things make me happy. Like seeing all of these folks watching the goings on at the airport, and a huge outdoor viewing area that was full of kids watching the planes take off. It reminded me of doing the same as a kid, the wonder of flight wether a bird, plane or dragonfly never ceases to impress me.

The Grey Kingbird is not yellow below like most kingbirds, although vocally and in shape it resembles the Tropical Kingbird, which I would assume is its closest relative. The Tropical has a yellow belly and green upperparts. Well named, this kingbird is more grey and white than black and white, and it is a fixture of the Caribbean. In parts of its range, like the S United States, and Cuba where this one was photographed, it is migratory, yet in other parts of its range it is a resident. We are working on a Dominican Republic tour for next year, and this should be one of the species we see commonly. The endemics are key, but seeing some of these common and widespread birds while traveling is special too. They become the friends that accompany you every day you are out birding, the regulars.

Caged birds are a conservation issue in Cuba. Not only the endemics but migrants like this Indigo Bunting.

Today was eagle day here in Hokkaido, Japan. This is one of the indescribable Steller's Sea-Eagles we saw today. But you have to consider that we likely saw 400-500 eagles today, and a good 150 -200 were Steller's, with White-tailed Eagle being the rest. It is frankly amazing, and the views are spectacular. And yes, we are returning next year if you are interested. 😀
