While the fires raged on Maui, even Hawaii’s Big Island was not spared. Here is Travel Classics writer Jeanne Cooper’s account of the Kohala fire from her Big Island home before and after the evacuation.

I am safe and physically unharmed after having to evacuate our Big Island home with my pets early Tuesday morning, due to the wildfire visible from our lanai and the 60-80mph gusty winds that were helping the flames leap across fire breaks. Another fire by the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel that threatened homes and downed lines prevented me from getting back safely until Wednesday.

But like so many around the world, and especially here in Hawai'i, that's also when a piece of my heart broke, as the extent of the destruction on Maui became clear. The suddenness, the scale of this disaster, the symbolism of the town it obliterated, and the sense that government isn't helping, make this a combination of 9/11 and Katrina for Maui and all who love her.

I haven't had much time to process it or energy to write about it; instead, I've been helping other journalists find sources for their stories and spreading word on social media of how to help, while leading our community's fire prevention team in dealing with local and state wildfire agencies.

Whatever you can do to share with writers and editors that this will be a long-haul recovery for Maui would be so appreciated. For those who want to donate directly to affected restaurant and hospitality workers,https://hawaiifoodandwinefestival.com/kokua-restaurant-and-hospitality-fund-for-maui/ is a vetted source.

Mahalo!

Deston Nokes, dear friend and frequent Travel Classics attendee, passed away on Monday, June 19 of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Diagnosed early last year, he enjoyed a brief remission before succumbing to the disease.

Always easy-going and joyful, Deston caught the travel bug early. He loved writing about his home town of Portland, as well as the personalities and cultural quirks of different destinations. His writing conveyed a sense of place, as opposed to pure service. He wrote for a variety of regional and national travel publications, including Bon Appetit and Travel + Leisure.

Besides being a fine writer, Deston will be missed for his kindness and gentle sense of humor. He leaves behind a devoted family and numerous travel-writing friends.

Newfoundland to Ballyconneely: John Alcock and Arthur Brown beat Charles Lindbergh by 8 years (1919 verses 1927) and crash-landed their tiny World War I bomber in a bog near what is now the Links. They were knighted by King George V, but never quite got the glory. Granted, it wasn’t Paris, but geez ---. Just imagine the joy they must have felt coming out of the fog and catching their first glimpse of Ireland.

Welcome to TravelClassics.com

Travel Classics is a community of writers, editors and tourism professionals --- all with a passion for travel and the thrills, frustrations, wonders, challenges, adventures, and inordinately humbling experiences that travel provides.

The company, originally Troutbeck Travel Writers Conference, kicked off 25 years ago in New York’s Hudson Valley as a boutique networking conference for major magazine editors and writers. Since then it has develolped into one of the most important travel media events in the world, hosting bi-annual conferences from places as far off as New Zealand and Arizona.

TravelClassics.com offers an inside look at this special (and surprisingly close) community of the industry’s elite.

Enjoy!
