The lack of consensus on the definition and importance of fascia has always generated debate. A new article published in the Journal of Anatomy proposes a concrete definition: fascia as an anatomical system in its own right, with four distinct organs and essential biomechanical functions! 🧬

đź“„ Main points of the study:
âś… Fascia is a layered system that covers the entire body, allowing tensional load and shear mobility.
âś… The fascial system is composed of four anatomical organs: superficial, musculoskeletal (deep), visceral and neural fascia.
âś… Its layers have distinct biomechanical properties, with some being more rigid (collagen) and others more viscous (hyaluronic acid), allowing different types of movement.
âś… Defining fascia in a universal way can unite different disciplines and transform research and clinical practice!

Is it Possible to Distribute Tumour Cells in the Tissue After Cancer Treatment Using Manual Lymph Drainage?

February 2025Phlebologie 54(2)
DOI:10.1055/a-2532-7596
Authors: Erich Brenner
Innsbruck Medical University

"The sources reveal some beneficial findings for manual lymph drainage (MLD) therapists but also crucial considerations:

MLD does not enhance tumour spread: A meta-analysis found no significant increase in tumour recurrence or metastasis [1].
According to individual studies, MLD improves the quality of life, mobility, and discomfort [1].
MLD is gentle: In breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL) patients, MLD does not enhance recurrence risk [2]. A research study examined 110 stage 0–3 breast cancer patients who received MLD therapy for BCRL and a control group until October 2013. Multivariate analysis showed that MLD therapy did not increase breast cancer recurrence [2].
Advanced tumour stages like lymphangiosis carcinomatosa require caution [1].
Individual evaluation required: Special instances require an individual examination [1].
MLD may disseminate hidden tumour cells in non-in-sano surgery and lymphangiosis carcinomatosa tumours [3].
After cancer treatment, MLD enhances quality of life [3].
MLD appears to be safe and can enhance lymphoedema patients' quality of life [1, 3]. Advanced tumour stages or situations like lymphangiosis carcinomatosa require vigilance and individual assessments [1, 3]."
