Happy Mother's Day to my mom! By the time she turned 35 in 1953 she had already been around the world twice! Right after the war she lived in Japan working for the US State Department to revitalize the Japanese economy. She loved to travel and she is no doubt where I got the travel bug from!

There's always something to find in your own backyard. "Big Boy" the world's largest steam locomotive: No 4004, built in 1941. Designed by Union Pacific on its rugged Cheyenne to Ogden, Utah run, retired from service in 1958. One of eight surviving examples, the Union Pacific had 25 of these goliaths built at over a quarter of a million dollars each. Simply amazing and if you are interested in trains and need advice on where to take one .... call me!

Who says you have to go to Broadway to see a great show? Spent a wonderful day exploring Central City, Colorado. Founded in 1859 by gold miners, Central City is a “hidden gem” in the Rocky Mountains, spend time walking through this gold rush town , visiting six casinos, touring a gold mine, or hiking through a breathtaking mountain setting. Central City is also home to the fifth oldest professional opera company in the United States and today we really enjoyed seeing “Kiss Me Kate,” a musical by Bella and Samuel Spewack with music and lyrics by Cole Porter (..and who doesn’t like Cole Porter!)

Spent the afternoon looking at Roman ruins around Split. Attached is a picture of the old Roman aqueduct that carried water to the Palace of Diocletian. Also visited the Palace of Diocletian, an ancient Roman palace built between 295 and 305 CE at Split, Croatia, by the emperor Diocletian as his place of retirement (he renounced the imperial crown in 305 and then lived at Split until his death in 316). The palace constitutes the main part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that was designated in 1979. It is the largest and best-preserved example of Roman palatial architecture, representing a transitional style half Greek and half Byzantine.

Second times a charm! This is a city you’ll want to come back to again and agains, it’s quite fascinating and special. Jutting out into the Adriatic Sea with a backdrop of rugged limestone mountains, Dubrovnik Old Town is known as one of the world’s finest and most perfectly preserved medieval cities in the world. If you love cats it’s the place to be — and if you liked The Game of Thrones you’ll recognize parts of the city.

We spent an awesome day wandering around Krka National Park, which is situated along the Krka River in southern Croatia. The park is known for a series of 7 waterfalls, which cascade over travertine rock. In the south, the Skradinski Buk waterfall is flanked by traditional watermills. It's awesome. Later back in Zdar we walked amongst Roman ruins in the Forum and shopped around old town before returning back to the ship for cocktails.

The origins of Castello di Spessa date back to the Roman ages, with the documented presence of a watchtower and a kiln; the castle itself dates back to the thirteenth century. Over the centuries, the various families who owned Castello di Spessa accommodated some notable figures including Giacomo Casanova and Lorenzo Da Ponte. It’s said that Casa Nova stayed here but was thrown off the grounds by the owner who caught him having a private interlude with a maid. There’s also a bunker built by the Italian army in 1939, now used as part of the wine cellar. The won’t tasting was good, and for those interested there’s a golf course nearby.

Outside of Trieste, Italy sits Castello di Duino, a private residence of the Princes della Torre e Tasso (von Thurn und Taxis), the Castle of Duino opened to the public in 2003. Erected during the 14th century on the ruins of a Roman military outpost it began to acquire cultural significance during the 17th century. Spent a lovely morning wandering through the residence and grounds, then later shopping nearby.

Throwback Travel Thursday. Rio de Janeiro, 2014. Sugarloaf Mountain is a peak situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. Rising 396 m above the harbor, its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar.
