After 7 years of the worst internet connection (courtesy of BT), we now have Starlink which gives us super fast speeds. There are more compelling reasons to visit Shangri-la but good for streaming movies.

December and January are the best times to view the unique wildlife spectacle which is the Horsey seal colony. Soon many thousands of seals will congregate at and near to Horsey beach during the pupping season. Large numbers of seals can be seen a short walk along the beach from Shangri-la. Get up early, grab a coffee and take a short walk: you’re certain to see large numbers of seals.

Paul Miles wrote in the Telegraph about staying at Shangri-la and visiting the seals:

"I had heard seals in the night. In the frosty cold, the dark northern sky scattered with stars, I slid open glass doors onto the verandah of our holiday home, built in a lee of dunes. There was the thud of waves on the beach and a strange howling. In the morning we discovered the source: 70 seals on the beach just the other side of the dunes. But the spectacle of thousands of the beasts is two miles further south, perhaps the most accessible seal colony in the country. According to our home’s visitor book, some seals - smaller harbour seals - can be seen in summer too. There were accounts of guests kayaking with them, using the kayaks stored in the garden shed."

We're fast approaching the best time of the year for a stay on the east Norfolk coast. The main draw at this time of year is, undoubtably, the seals. These photos were taken a few years ago by one of our guests who kindly allowed us to use them. The seals can be seen just a short walk down the beach from Shangri-la (the house is located immediately behind the dunes, a true beach house). An autumn and winter stay at Shangri-la is all about long beach walks by the stormy sea with the prospect of a cosy evening meal at the nearby . The recently re-opened The Ingham Swan is a mere 3 miles door-to-door from Shangri-la. What could be better than staying at your own luxury beach house, next to one of Norfolk’s finest beaches with Norfolk’s best fine-dining restaurant on your door step? That pretty much seems to have all the bases covered for the perfect, relaxing break.

The reborn Ingham Swan is a re-boot of the original: all the same old-world charm, impeccable service and, most of all, fine dining par excellence. If there is anywhere better in Norfolk to enjoy a perfectly pitched meal, then it's well hidden! The Ingham Swan can hold its own with other perhaps more well-known establishments in north Norfolk. Most importantly they still serve fish and chips as the bar snack option.

Our first visit, post resurrection, was long awaited but well worth it. Even on a Friday lunchtime it was pretty busy. At weekends it is going to be very difficult to get in without booking well in advance. The amuse bouche was fantastic and set the scene for chicken liver parfait, followed by confit duck and finishing with blood orange parfait. Of course the fish and chips was to die for. All in all not a meal but a long awaited experience. It was then back to Waxham for a walk along the beach and some seal spotting.
