So on the way up to Skye today we had thunder and lightning, heavy rain, then blue skies and sunshine with what felt like gale force winds - just your typical Scottish summer! ☔️⚡️💨☀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Gorgeous day in Edinburgh ☀️

Working this morning doing a guided tour of the National Museum of Scotland with an American group who are a lot of fun!

While they have free time to explore the city on their own this afternoon I’ve been at the fabulous Lavery exhibition at the National Gallery and hitting some Fringe shows later 🤩

Back with the group tomorrow for Rosebank Distillery and the Tattoo!

Gorgeous long summer nights in Scotland at this time of year, when it never really gets properly dark. This photo was taken at 2.30am in Aberdeen. Not by me I hasten to add! Luckily we have local contacts out partying in the wee small hours 😂😂😂

Of course the flip side of this is that in mid-winter it’s dark by 4pm - but we can worry about that nearer the time!

NO SCOTLAND NO PARTY!

So the Euros kick off tonight, with Scotland facing Germany in the opening match ⚽️⚽️⚽️ It’s been a long time coming, and the Tartan Army seem to be making the most of the atmosphere (and the beer!) in Munich!

Good luck Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The German city has become a Scottish enclave as fans soak up the atmosphere ahead of kick off.

At Urquhart Castle today on the banks of Loch Ness, guiding a lovely French family of 8 adults and 9 kids under 8 - so lots of very excited Nessie hunters! One wee one even said he’d seen Nessie’s head appear in the loch! 😮🦕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🦕 Loch Ness is 37km / 23 miles long, 230m / 755ft deep and contains more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined
🦕There have been over 3,000 reported sightings of the Loch Ness monster
🦕The loch has a huge population of eels, which might explain some of them!
🦕However many sonar readings to this day remain unexplained….

OTD 1746 The Battle of Culloden

The last pitched battle to be fought on British soil, Culloden was over in under an hour and resulted in a resounding defeat for the Jacobites, led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie).

Victory for the government forces at Culloden meant the Jacobite campaign was finally over. It led to a harsh period of repression, and ultimately brought an end to the traditional way of life of the Highlanders.

Wee jaunt over the border today to the north east of England, dodging the showers for a look at Hadrian’s Wall.

Built by the Romans in AD122, there are substantial remains of the wall and also forts at various locations - today we were at Vindolanda (which also has a fantastic museum) and Housesteads.

Happy International Women’s Day! 🙋‍♀️

I have owned Scottish Highland Trails since 2009 and have been running it successfully ever since. In that time I’ve also completed the 2 year course to become a qualified Blue Badge tourist guide for Scotland, and learnt to wear many different hats (often all at the same time!) as well as juggling kids and home life. I absolutely LOVE what I do, it’s honestly the best job in the world! 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So happy IWD, especially to my fellow women entrepreneurs. May you continue to find joy and success in all you do! 🏆🥇🙌

Scott’s View, overlooking the Eildon Hills in the Scottish Borders, was beautiful in the sunshine today ☀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A favourite spot of the 19th century author Sir Walter Scott, it’s said the horses pulling his hearse stopped here of their own accord on the way to his burial at nearby Dryburgh Abbey.

Today is International Tourist Guides Day and here’s me this morning taking a fab group of ladies on a guided tour of the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh!

I love doing art themed tours, it’s always really interesting to hear other people’s interpretations and opinions! I often guide in the SNG, the Portrait Gallery and the likes of the Kelvingrove and the Burrell in Glasgow. I also recently attended a great series of lectures on Modern Art so I’m all set if anyone fancies a tour of Modern 1 / 2 in Edinburgh to find out what all that random stuff is all about! 😂🎨🖼️

A wee souvenir from our trip to the Western Isles! North Uist Distillery is closed to visitors during the winter months but Big Dave knocked at the door anyway and they were kind enough to let us in for a quick sample! They are planning to produce whisky at some point in the future but meantime they have some amazing gins. We went for Downpour Coast and Croft which has flavours of pepper dulse seaweed and wild thyme, plus we couldn’t resist a bottle of ready-to-drink oak aged negroni. Delicious! And aren’t the bottles pretty?! 🤩 🥂
