Bringing a pet from overseas to the Philippines involves a set of regulations and requirements designed to ensure the health and safety of the pet, as well as to prevent the spread of diseases. Here are the general steps and requirements as of my last update in April 2023. Please note that regulations can change, so it's advisable to check with the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) forthe most current information.
1. **Secure an Import Permit**
- Before your pet can enter the Philippines, you must obtain an import permit from the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI). The application can usually be done online through the BAI website or by contacting them directly.
2. **Vaccination and Health Requirements**
- **Dogs and Cats**: Must be vaccinated against rabies not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months before the date of arrival in the Philippines. Additional vaccinations for dogs include distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. For cats, vaccinations for feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia are required.
- Health Certificate**: A valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian from the country of origin must be presented. The certificate should state that the pet is free from, and has not been exposed to, any contagious diseases at least 60 days before the travel date. The health certificate must be issued within a certain period before arrival, often 10 days.
3. **Microchip**
- While not always mandatory, having your pet microchipped is highly recommended for identification purposes. If a microchip is implanted, it should comply with ISO 11784/11785 standards.
4. **Quarantine**
- Upon arrival, pets may be subject to quarantine at the discretion of the Quarantine Officer. The duration and necessity of quarantine depend on the pet's health status and the discretion of the officer.
5. **Customs Declaration**
- You may need to declare your pet at customs and provide all the required documents, including the import permit, vaccination records, and health certificate. There may be fees or duties to be paid for the importation of pets.
6. **Arrival During Office Hours**
- It’s advisable to have pets arrive during office hours to ensure that all necessary inspections and paperwork can be processed without delay.
Preparation Tips:
- **Contact Airlines Early**: Airlines have specific pet travel policies and may require additional documentation or have restrictions on breeds, sizes, or the number of pets that can be transported. Early coordination is crucial.
- **Check for Breed Restrictions**: Some breeds may be subject to restrictions or bans, so verify this before planning your travel.
- **Plan Your Travel Dates Carefully**: Considering weather conditions and temperature restrictions for pet travel is important to ensure your pet's safety and comfort.
Given the complexity of importing pets and the potential for regulations to change, contacting the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry and the embassy or consulate for the most current information is crucial well before your intended travel date.
