We completed shopping now for 70 kids and we have received some more donations.

So proud that all our kids from last year who are still in Manguito School can attend classes by the end of August as they have received their full uniforms and school supplies.

Alex, Andrew, Danielle, Emelin, Frank, Jordanny, Mileisy, Rebecca, Runiely, Yaciely and Zadhiel have happy faces as well.

Completed an other day of shopping.

today 16 more happy faces. (Ashley, Nanyelo, Anderson, Nayelo, Jonathan, Nayelie, Analis, Esmeralda, Oswald, Inoelvis, Senahaida, Nachelie, Ester, John Kerry, Esther, Eslaynie).

In total we did shop already for 59 kids, have some more funds for kids and missing for 2 kids.

Shopping day 2
Totally exhausted but 16 happy faces today.

All those 15 girls and 1 boy received their full school/sport uniform including shoes and sneakers and all school supplies. (See total list in our previous post from yesterday). The little girl on photo 3 is happy but refused to smile as she was missing 2 teeth.

Still 8 kids from last year are on a waiting list as we don't have funds for them.

Back to school for the new season.

For 61 children from the Domino Foundation Dominican Republic project it is already reality that they can return to school after the summer holiday.

For 11 children we are missing in this moment the dollars to buy the uniforms and the supplies.

Do you want to make the difference and keep a child in school and change his or her future?

The total school package of both uniform, 2 pair of shoes, underwear, socks, belt, backpack, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, sharpener, eraser etc is around USD 110.

The schoolyear is coming to an end and we started our new Project for the new schooluniforms 2024-2025.
Many sponsors from last year told us they will sponsor again, but we also have 31 children (out of 72 from last year) that are still looking for a sponsor. We are already more then half way with still 7 weeks to go.
The schools will start on August 19, 2024.
Are you able/willing to change the future of a child?
Education is so important for those children.
- They will not hang around on the street
- They will get a decent meal 5 times a week
- They learn how to read, write and count
- They will have more opportunities to find a job
- Less chance they will end up in poverty or crime
A full sporst/school uniform including the school supplies is average USD 110.

The Cable car (Teleferico) will be closed for a long time (latest information we got, for approx 2 years). They will replace everything in total, to have more capacity for the future with all cruise ships coming in.

You still can do the city tour and visiting the mountain. We will drive up the mountain.

We will have the city tour by truck on Wednesdays and/or Fridays.
With a minimum of 6 and maximum of 8 people we will do it on the other days by minivan.

Many people ask about what currency is better? Please read below as it can help you decide what is best for you and locals when visiting the DR.

Dollars, Pesos ??? Whatever you are most comfortable with will be fine. There is no hard fast rule..

While US is accepted everywhere in the free world, most countries will require a fee to change US dollars to the local country currency. Imagine the crappy rate you get when spending US in Canada? Same thing everywhere.

•

Pesos are the currency of the Dominican Republic, and they are accepted everywhere, and they are accepted at par with the prices displayed on the menu or the price tag. So your $300 Peso meal will cost you $300 Pesos!

But.......!!!!.

If you pull out US cash, be prepared to pay the equivalent of $350 pesos with the local exchange rate being highly in favour of the establishment.

•

People get a better deal with goods when they use Dominican Pesos with the local vendors and in the markets shopping for souvenirs and food. When spending US dollars a poor rate of exchange is to be expected.

If you are Canadian, you will be subject to 2 exchange fees - 'one' when you buy US for more than it is worth- and 'two' when you spend that US for less than it is worth.

•

You can purchase Pesos in Canada before coming, or you can exchange CDN dollars with the money changers at the Playa Dorada Mall or at a bank. They give a fair rate. And depending on which hotel you are staying at, you can also get a decent rate at the hotel lobby for your CDN cash. Some hotels are much much worse than others, so be sure to check their exchange rate.

•

Most establishments will take credit cards but be sure to bring your photo ID. La Sirena, Jumbo, Jose Luis all take credit cards. All of the finer restaurants will accept credit cards. However, when dining out, remember there may be a surcharge when using a credit card, it is best to ask if there is a price difference for cash.

•

And ... there are ATM machines at many prominent locations where you can get pesos using your Canadian debit card. There is usually about a RD $250 fee associated with the ATM ( $6.00 CDN ) so avoid taking out small sums daily. It is best to go for the max $10,000 Pesos and pay the fee just once. Canadian Scotia Bank customers can use the Scotia Bank ATMs without a fee. La Sirena has a Scotia Bank ATM and the Jose Luis Supermarket downtown is right across the street from the Scotia Bank.

Currency Tips:

• Bring lots of small bills as most retailers claim not to have change and they are great for tipping at resort.

• Only carry the amount of cash that you need on you.

• Subdivide cash in your pockets to prevent flashing money around.

• Don't use travelers checks.

• Keep credit card info in your safe in case you lose your card.

• ATMs will work with most North American bank cards.

• Know the exchange rates.

Today the Carnaval starts in Puerto Plata.

As of this year the program changed.

Starting at Plaza Independencia with an exhibition for the children.

The participating groups will departure from the Guinea bridge, going down Calle Seperacion to the Malecon going to La Puntilla.

Finally!
Yesterday the 3 boxes for our foundation arrived. Full of donations from people from the Netherlands. Thank you Kim Plooij and Bianca St for collecting and shipping. Thank you info Dominicaanse Republiek for arranging the free transportation.

Tomorrow after school all families from the little Manguito school are invited to pick up some clothes and for every child a present.

Sadly enough yesterday we got a message from a tourist with a very bad experience on a tour.

He booked a snorkel tour with a tour seller at the beach. He asked the seller if he was Elvis and the person answered I'm a seller for Elbia Tours.

This seller was not only lying to the tourist, but also sold them a very bad quality tour.
