Wrapped up our annual trip to Northern Minnesota on Friday with a bunch of awesome species that included our main targets, Great-gray Owl, Snowy Owl and the rare and elusive Boreal Owl! Great fun navigating the cold temperatures with such a fantastic group of winter birding enthusiasts! Irruptions this season were observed from Boreal and Great Gray Owl (all over the place it seemed), but also from Purple Finch and White-winged Crossbill. Other avian notables included an immature Golden Eagle and Peregrine Falcon down at the Duluth harbor front, plus Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Harrier, Northern Shrike, Black-billed Magpie, Canada Jay and Snow Bunting on the backroads. Surprised, but delighted by the many Ruffed Grouse seen out feeding during the middle of the day this year. It's also always exciting bumping into mammals as you travel around the bog, and this year we we lucky to see a close Timber Wolf and a very trusting Snowshoe Hare. Spring will be here before we know it and so will our favorite neo-tropical migrants! While some will stick around the mountains of Western North Carolina, many will carry-on to their breeding grounds in Canada. But before they arrive, they will be stopping for a much needed layover at the southern tip of Lake Erie to rest and fatten up for the remainder of their journey, affording birders fantastic and often close up views. It's Sparrow Saturday! Similar to Western North Carolina's Dark-eyed Junco, is the Yellow-eyed Junco of the South West. "In Veracruz, Mexico, native people in the 1860s called the Yellow-eyed Junco the "caster of fire" or the "lightning bird."
