World Expeditions: Mountaineering Take the first step to exploratory treks and mountaineering trips with world-class expedition leaders

Mountaineering expeditions and treks to some of the world’s most spectacular mountain ranges in the company of some of the world’s most experienced mountain guides. We explore remote peaks and passes in Nepal, India, the Tian Shan and Pamirs of Central Asia and Western China, the Cordillera Real in Bolivia, Aconcagua – the highest mountain in the southern hemisphere, Ecuador, Mont Blanc, The Eiger

and the Matterhorn and Mt Cook in New Zealand. Our mountaineering expeditions involve trekking on remote trails in variable conditions for up to eight to twelve and sometimes even more, hours a day. They include travel on snow and ice requiring the use of mountaineering boots, crampons and ice axe. Expect to carry up to 12-15kgs in your rucksack on various stages of the expedition. You will spend a reasonable portion of the trip at altitude (with some days in excess of 5500-7500m) and normally have several camps on glaciers. You will need an excellent level of fitness and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions in remote areas.

Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure this December? Join Tim Macartney-Snape on our exclusive Remote Annapurna and Manaslu Exploratory Trek!

This remarkable 31-day journey will be guided by the legendary first (and only) ascensionist of the great south wall of Annapurna II, exploring an entirely new route. While modern roads have encroached upon some parts of the Annapurna region, the flanks and upper side valleys of its gorges remain pristine and untouched. Among these, the Marsyandi River valley stands out with its rugged beauty, carving a breathtaking gorge between the majestic Manaslu-Himal Chuli massif and the Annapurnas. Experience exhilarating trekking on the eastern Annapurna slopes, offering spectacular "on top of the world" views. Beyond the front range, you will find the breathtaking peaks of the Larkya Himal, towering up to 7,000 meters—these two awe-inspiring areas will be the focus of our exploratory trek.

Designed for fit adventurers, this trek is graded as entry-level mountaineering with a basic technical grade, ensuring an incredible challenge while also being accessible. Tim's dream to delve deeper into this mesmerizing region has culminated in a plan that guarantees you a truly unique experience.

Mark your calendar for December 8, 2024 (expect fresh, invigorating conditions!)—we still have a few spots left, and this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss!

We have another exhilarating mountaineering trip to offer to our WE climbing community: Llullaillaco (6739m/20,928ft) with Victor Saunders, located on the border between Chile and Argentina. Victor came to us with the idea for this trip, and we're excited he did. It's a unique mix of trekking, climbing, and archaeology set amid an incredible landscape.

This 17-day expedition grading is 9, intermediate mountaineering/technical grading intermediate. Experience at altitude is essential, and our expert team review all applications to ensure it's a suitable adventure for you. The route isn't super technical, though it is exposed in sections with an icy traverse requiring crampons/ice axes and lots of scree/loose rock to navigate through.

For trip details and booking, go to: https://worldexpeditions.com/Chile/Mountaineering/Llullaillaco-6739m-with-Victor-Saunders

Victor has just completed an excellent first ascent of a beautiful mountain in an unvisited valley in Pakistan. To say people who join him on Llullaillaco are in for a treat is an understatement; he is a true pioneer of the mountaineering world.

NEW for 2025 – Embark on a fully supported expedition-style ascent of Spantik Peak (7027m/23,054ft) led by mountaineer legend Andrew Lock.

Spantik, also known as Golden Peak, is located in a remote corner of the Karakoram in Pakistan. After a short trek to reach our base camp at the foot of the southeast ridge, you'll settle in for the 14-day climbing period. A 1:2 climbing sherpa (aka High Altitude porters in Pakistan) to climber ratio will provide comprehensive support on the trip. This expedition includes all group camping equipment, quality alpine tents, insulated mats, and a mess tent with a table and stools. Our full expedition services include guides, cooks, porters, and safety equipment, including a portable high-altitude chamber, satellite phone, expedition medical kit, etc.

You need excellent fitness, strong self-reliance, and a sound alpine CV to join this adventure. This includes familiarity with basic climbing techniques to traverse exposed ridges and solid experience at altitude. A commitment to work as part of a team is also essential, with approval needed before confirmation. Who's in?

Announcing the new date for our Kun Expedition: 01 August 2025.
Get on top of your game for the epic journey with peerless leader Dean Staples.

The 2025 trip includes three days of acclimatising in the vicinity of Dondara and trekking towards the Boktol pass (4860m/15,945ft). The pass was one of the highlights of our classic Himalayan Traverse linking Kashmir to Ladakh, which we operated between 1978 and 1989 before the outbreak of political unrest in Kashmir. We are pleased to be able to revisit this area once more in a more stable manner.

Graded 10 (advanced mountaineering), this expedition requires an excellent level of fitness, solid technical skills, and previous ascents above 6000m/19,685ft. You must get the approval of our mountaineering expert to join this expedition. This trip is suitable for experienced climbers looking to take the next step under the tutelage of an excellent leader.

Ojos del Salado with Lydia Bradey | 30 October 2024

Climb the highest active volcano on earth, Ojos del Salado (6893m/22,615ft) in Chile. This carefully considered itinerary is a little longer than most, with ample acclimatisation and weather contingency days. Ojos, one of the Volcanic Seven Summits (comprised of the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents), offers straightforward climbing on our route from the Chilean side, combined with time spent in the Atacama desert and relaxation in thermal hot springs.

You'll be in expert hands with the fantastic Lydia Bradey leading this departure. She is, amongst many other epic achievements, the first woman in the world to climb Mt. Everest without supplementary oxygen (1988).

From the Field | Here's a brief update from our leader, Binod, who's currently leading the World Expeditions' epic Great Himalaya Trail (GHT). The small group is camped on the shores of Phoksundo Lake.

"The Dolpo Trek has been wonderful. We crossed many different high passes with spectacular views and excellent weather." Our GHT trekkers have just under a month to go on their 150-day trip.

Considering joining your first mountaineering expedition? What does a day in a beginner mountaineering course look like?

For instance, one day will be spent practising self-rescue using various friction knots, and another learning how to abseil. There is also time spent learning how to place snow and ice protection and going through a variety of knots so you can learn why, what, and where specific knots are used. Practice makes perfect!

Once you’ve learnt the key alpine skills in great detail, you’ll put them to the test on an achievable climb.
