The islands are known for their volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches and unique wildlife that influenced Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection.

The iconic La Pedrera – Casa Mila, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece designed by Antoni Gaudi and a highlight of the city’s Modernista architecture. Completed in 1912, La Pedrera (“stone quarry”) is an apartment complex built around a pair of courtyards. It has an undulating stone facade, balconies decorated with abstract wrought iron, and a roof with fantastical chimneys and ventilation towers resembling abstract sculptures. Beyond the visual novelties are key architectural innovations, including a curtain wall exterior and brick catenary arches in the attic that support the roof. Many of the apartments in La Pedrera are still occupied, but we can arrange a private tour of the highlights of the building, including the roof, the Butterfly Courtyard and an apartment restored with period furniture.

Casa Amatller in Barcelona is a landmark of the city’s Modernista architectural movement. Designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch for a chocolate magnate and completed in 1900, the house has rich ornamentation in a mix of medieval, Moorish and Flemish styles. Light passing through stained-glass windows dapples color on arched doorways, wood-beamed ceilings and an array of sculpted details, delighting the eye wherever you look. Barcelona is renowned for its architecture, and we love seeing the city’s masterpieces of Catalan Modernism by Antoni Gaudi and his contemporaries. One of the most iconic sites is the spectacular La Sagrada Familia (Temple Expiatori de Sagrada Familia), Barcelona’s landmark designed by Gaudi in the 1880s. Famously unfinished, the fantastical, towering basilica is expected to be completed in 2026, 144 years after construction began.
