"Scamp Failed the Shakedown Test!" This little 1996 16' Scamp is where it all began for FlyTheCoopRV. 🛻 James bought it as a gift for me, but the story doesn’t start there. His dad had originally purchased it 15 years ago and turned it into his backyard coffee shed. When we decided to take the plunge into RV life, we thought, "Why not bring this little beauty back to life?" Over two years, we poured our hearts (and nights and weekends) into renovating it. From black-and-white checkered floors to a retro turquoise fridge, we created our dream vintage camper. We even added a vinyl record table—every detail was carefully planned. But… then came the shakedown trip. That’s when we learned RV Lesson #1: Practicality beats Pinterest dreams. The dinette folded into a bed that was exactly 6 feet long. To sleep, spoon-cuddling wasn’t optional—it was mandatory. And if one of us needed to roll over, we had to wake the other person up, one would need to get OUT of the bed, so the other could roll over, then reset. 🤦🏻‍♀️. After a weekend of zero sleep, sore backs, and questioning all our decisions, we knew it wasn’t the right rig for us. The next day, it was on Facebook Marketplace. While it was tough to let go of something we worked so hard on, it was a crucial lesson: always rent or test out a similar rig before committing to renovations. This 4th of July, we decided to switch things up and experience the Hwy 21 Drive-In Harvest Host in Beaufort, SC—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! 🎆✨ With three screens to choose from, a concession stand serving delicious food, and an owner who greeted us like old friends, this was a perfect escape from the usual chaos of campgrounds during a holiday weekend. 🚐🍿 But let's get real about the challenge: July in South Carolina. 🌦️ We were greeted by rain upon arrival, followed by seriously intense heat and humidity. Despite blasting the AC and running our generator, the sleepless, sweaty nights made it hard to enjoy the experience for more than one night. 😅 By morning, we were desperate to find hookups just to survive the heat! The loss of James’s parents and his childhood home led us to make a decision out of desperation and hopelessness. 🏡💔 James had big dreams of creating the ultimate man-cave—basement pinball machines, arcade games, and vintage bar decor. The idea of having a “home base” while still traveling seemed perfect—or so we thought. But the reality? It turned out to be much more complicated. Before the ink even dried on the mortgage, James lost his job. 💼 The expenses of owning a home quickly outweighed our ability to travel, and the depression of being stuck in one place hit us hard. Fast forward to now, and we see how that panic decision shaped our lives. We tried renting the house, only to be scammed by a property management company, and ended up with a tenant wanted by the FBI. 😱 The house was tied up in litigation for months—we couldn’t sell it, rent it, or even access it. The emotional and financial toll was devastating. When we finally regained possession, we had to sell it during one of the worst housing market crashes in years—losing $100k just to cut ties with Iowa and home ownership completely. 💸 Looking back, this experience reminds us why RV life is everything to us. It’s the freedom, the flexibility, and the ability to make big decisions without the crushing weight of traditional home ownership. The lesson?
