US Passport Updates: countries operating under the European Union’s Schengen Convention are enforcing a requirement that a passport be valid for at least three months beyond a traveler’s intended date of departure. A few Caribbean nations also have this requirement.
“These countries will turn you back at the U.S. departure point,” she said. “It’s caused a lot of hiccups for travelers.” The State Department is recommending U.S. citizens renew their passports if they have less than six months left before its expiration date.
Countries party to the Schengen Convention include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
“What we see every Monday morning are people who missed their flights on the weekend because they were denied, and now they need expedited paperwork,” she said.

Dappled wanderings by the banks of the Seine, warm mornings over pain au chocolat and café au lait, husky eves over Pernod and red wine – surrounded by blossoming chestnut groves, blooming jardins, and truly stunning blue spring days, there’s everything to love about the French capital from April to June (better yet, there’s still plenty of room to swan about, with lines to the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower not nearly as thick as the hectic midyear).

What if you have kids?
Paris offers a number of specially designed children’s workshops at famous museums (The Louvre, Centre Pompidou), and attractions such as the Parc Zoologique de Paris, which reopened in 2014 after a six-year renovation as a “new species of zoo.” On a smaller scale, the charming Ménagerie in the Jardin des Plantes is one of the world’s oldest zoos. It was first populated with animals from Marie Antoinette’s farm at Versailles. Today its focus is on preserving biodiversity, with protected species like orangutans and a snow leopard.

The annual Paris Plages, when an artificial beach is set up on the Seine, is a popular, free event with sprinklers, sand castles and kid games galore.

In big museum news, the Musée de l’Homme (Museum of Mankind) reopened in October 2015 after a six-year renovation. Perched on the top of the Trocadéro facing the Eiffel Tower, this historic anthropology museum was where Pablo Picasso came to sketch “primitive” masks, inspired by African art along with other famed artists and philosophers (including Matisse). Today the museum offers a cutting-edge look at the past, present and future of humanity with the latest technology. Kids love the two-level “La Galerie de l’Homme,” which traces human evolution, because of all the interactive exhibits. Plus there’s a new kid-oriented app (for smartphones and tablets).

Punta Cana’s international airport will soon become a member of a very small group of international airports that can check and clear passengers traveling from the terminal to the U.S.

The terminal, situated on the Dominican Republic’s easternmost region, will be able to do U.S. customs and immigration proceedings right at the Dominican terminal, thus avoiding the long lines at U.S. airports.

Last year the airport received some 1.1 million passengers coming in from the United States. Currently, 15 international airports in the world have been included in this program.

No date has been given as to when the program will officially begin in the Dominican Republic.

Nine other international airports in the following eight countries were chosen by the U.S. authorities to participate in this innovative program: Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, England and Japan.

During 2014 some 20 million passengers from these countries visited the United States. Six percent of this total number came from Punta Cana’s international airport.

The fact that the U.S. government will share its airport security system with the country is excellent news for the Dominican Republic, and for its dynamic tourism industry, because it will strengthen its international image as a safe destination for travelers, businesses and investors.

The pre-inspection system will make all flights between Punta Cana and U.S. airports domestic flights. The system will facilitate travel between Punta Cana’s international airport and 65 U.S. cities whose airports do not handle international flights.
