Six years ago today with my satchel and shining morning face creeping very willingly to school… snapped by my daughter in emulation of her first-day-of-term pics, I’m off on the first night of the City of Westminster Guide Lecturers' Association course back in 2018. The 2024/5 students begin their course tomorrow. Good luck to everyone starting the new term 🍀 it’s an amazing journey. Work precludes me from joining you on your first day tomorrow but I am looking forward to working with you later in the year on the street for your first practical sessions

Another sunny morning yesterday and I had the pleasure of being out-and-about with one of my very favourite regular groups looking for newspaper history along Fleet Street with my Publish & Be Damned! walking tour. Thanks for joining me you guys!
I’ve just scheduled a few dates for this walk - the first one I ever wrote and curated - for next spring. Visit the London Walks website at

Thinking about going on the guided Publish And Be Damned! tour? Have a little read about the sights, hidden spots, your guide and meeting point beforehand!

Today started in and ended up in under blue skies all the way.
Summer is putting up a pretty good fight in the last round 🍂🥊🌞
This morning’s group was a great new group from Essex (forgot to get a pic) and we explored East London (next month we’re in Soho). And this afternoon a lovely, easygoing walk and talk with super friendly and fun work colleagues from West London - Kensington looked fab in the sunshine. Feeling very grateful for the beautiful day. Thanks to everyone who joined me.
If you’d like your own private tour of London, DMs are always open

One of my favourite starts to the week this morning… a theatre walk.
🎭
Theatre is famously “the bastard art” drawing as it does from all the creative and expressive arts. So our topic is immediately wide-ranging - from lit crit to the evolution of acoustics in theatre architecture.
🎭
Throw in architecture itself and the scene is quite literally set for a “History Of Everything” extravaganza!
🎭
Add economics (the hows-and-whys of funding), gender- and sexual-politics, technology (from gaslighting to laser projection), social history & class (the price of tickets and who buys ‘em), politics (censorship, ideas and protest). Season well with gossipy tales and legends and superstitions and it can make for a thematically rich couple of hours.
🎭
It can be all of that… or we can just have a mooch around and see some extraordinarily pretty buildings. So many of them in such a small area. It’s up to you.
🎭
This morning’s group from Australia were on a theatre trip to London. Thanks for joining me! If you’d like a private theatre tour of your own, DM’s are always open

Scenes from my monthly East End Sunday… Thanks to everyone who joined me today.
Once a month I lead two walking tours of the glorious East End of London. In the morning it’s in Bethnal Green unfolding the story of The Krays; in the afternoon it social history, politics, immigration and more on The Unknown East End walk. Come and join me next time - Sunday 13th October 10:45 am & 2:30pm. Reserve your place via London Walks

A fantastic start to the week with this theatre group from Oregon - returning for the second year in-a-row. As last year we went off looking for theatre history in the West End - different theatres this year but the same lovely group. Always great to welcome my “Repeat Offenders” back to London!

Out-and-about in old Soho (where they drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola/c-o-l-a cola) this morning. It’s the final on-street session with the City of Westminster Guide Lecturers' Association students 23/24 before their exams and I’m looking forward to our session today

In 19 years of being a this has only happened once before… 4 walking tours in one day.
🥾🧭👉🗣️❤️
The day started with a very sparky bunch of 9- and 10-year-olds looking for immigration & multiculturalism tales from the Kindertransport statue at Liverpool Street to Spitalfields. Then with a lovely office group of international work colleagues we explored the East End’s social & political history. From there via Elizabeth Line to the West End for The Seven Deadly Sins of Covent Garden with another lovely office group, this time from Google. And the evening was rounded off by a most excellent group of Texan students on the Ghosts of the Old City Walk 💀.
I couldn’t do 4 tours every day of course 😜 but this day I’ve had an absolute blast ❤️ Best job in the world. Thanks to everyone who joined me. All tours bookable through London Walks . Right… bedtime 🥱 🥾
