Today is Epiphany, which finally marks the end of the holidays here in Italy (many people have been off work and kids out of school until tomorrow!). The day is commonly called Befana, in reference to the old lady who wanders the earth giving toys and treats to children from her broomstick. Despite the more modern depictions of her, she is not a "witch" - but read our background for the story of La Befana!

What's your favorite gelato flavor? The end-of-year flavor round-up is out; despite the vast array of flavors, Italians choose Cioccolato (chocolate), Nocciola (hazelnut), Limone (lemon), Fragola (strawberry), and Crema (pastry cream) the most. Usually in a combination of two flavors, but some may go with gusto for 3! What is your favorite flavor or combination?

The weirdest flavors of the year? In Altamura (Puglia) they have gelato di pane (bread). A gelateria in Frascati seems to have missed its calling as an osteria as they serve pizza, cacio e pepe, and alici (anchovy) flavors! (We aren't convinced on those ourselves.) And in Cagliari Sardegna, a gelateria makes black truffle gelato!

The newly-restored Trevi Fountain is now open fully again and displaying its full splendor. If you can get near it, that is! It starts to get crowded earlier so if you want to see it without a giant crowd in the small piazza, you have to rise in the wee hours of daybreak. But ah, what a sight!
AND many don't know, but there is a world (and an attraction) BELOW the famous fountain, too! :)

Assisi is beautiful any time but at the holidays it is really special. Not only is this where the first Nativity scene is said to have been staged (by St Francis himself) but the lights and aura of the town are something magical. 🤩

Welcome to the holidays in Italy! From elaborate city-wide displays (like Salerno's Luci d'Artista) to towns that decorate in simple but stunning fashion (like Locorotondo, which you currently see on our Facebook header), the variety of lights and decorations up and down the boot are beautiful in all their forms. But one of the highlights every year in Rome is the Fendi display. After walking down the glittery and glamorous Via dei Condotti, or under the mile-long arbor of lights on Via del Corso, you come to the Palazzo Fendi and every year, the display is inspired and different and causes "oohs" and "aaahs".

Where are your favorite Italian holiday lights or displays? What makes Italy special at this time of year for YOU?
