When my mom was feeling grateful, she’d say, “Aren’t we lucky”. Mom also had very distinctive handwriting as teachers tried to “correct” her left-handedness when she was young. I recently found a note she wrote to me in 1992 and was delighted to see the phrase in her own hand. It’s my new tattoo, on my inner forearm so I can see it often. So lucky, indeed. Thanks, Mom.

Long ago, I was in possession of a cake tin like this one. Through the passage of time and many (many!) moves, I lost track of it. At this weekend’s crafta-palooza estate sale, I spotted it amongst the Tupperware flotsam & jetsam. It’s just so beautiful. The woman’s face and countenance bring me joy. I mean, I know it’s just a fruitcake tin, but look at her! Sadly, she’s endured some sort of neck injury, but is lovely, all the same. I was thrilled to bring her home once again - for 50 cents.

A Snowy Estate Sale and Resentments - Addendum to Part I

I forgot to tell you this part: when I asked the statuary pilferer, “Are you taking every single piece of concrete?” She answered yes. I told her what I thought of her. She snapped, “I’ve been here since 5:30 am.” That part was obvious. The sale started at 9:00. She had a rented box truck backed into the driveway.
Part II:
So, I managed to find a few goodies. Two small rolls of vintage wrapping paper even though I literally can’t remember the last time I wrapped a gift, candles for my mantel, a black Halloween owl, a fun cocktail shaker, a golden wall sconce which will hold the plastic poppies in my guest room. The two jolly fellas will be incorporated into directional signage at our Holiday Fest! in November. Which is the better use of the gigantic ceramic fish in my mermaid bathroom…as a jewelry caddy or as a roll holder? Please vote in the comment section. 🧜🏻‍♀️

A Snowy Estate Sale and Resentments - Part I
So, there was a sale listed for today not too far from my house. The listing included photos of dozens of concrete statues; gnomes, ducks, (so many!) deer 🥹, bears, pelicans, lighthouses, on and on and on. We’ve had a lot of snow, so fueled by coffee and pure adrenaline, I drove as responsibly as possible 🚙💨 through the slick streets to get there this morning. By the time I arrived at about 9:30 am, a dealer had taped SOLD tags on every single solitary piece of concrete (slide 5). There must have been 100 statues of various sizes and prices, every last one was tagged with blue painters tape with her initials.
As a decades long junker, I fully understand that sales are a first-come-first-served sitch, but let’s be reasonable. She couldn’t leave even a few for the rest of us?! I stomped inside and spotted the fish in the bathroom. I grabbed it before she could get her grubby hands on that, too. I wasn’t even sure I wanted it, but was motivated by pure spite.
There were 2 silver linings. I ran smack into in one of the several Christmas areas. I spotted some fantastic vintage Santa Claus ribbon that I handed over to her to use for her crafting projects. Also, I got inspiration for my next wedding dress. 😉🍑 So, it wasn’t a total bust. Tomorrow, I’ll show you what I bought and where the fish now lives.

You guys! While emptying bookcases at my desert casita, I found the stack of national magazines that featured Plucky shows and/or trips. (Remember magazines?) Seeing them all together was a joy! All of that media attention represents countless hours of marketing; emails and phone calls and interviews and uploads and downloads. What a fantastic experience it’s been since 2011. Can’t wait to do another Holiday Fest! in Portland in November 2025. Who’s in? 💛🖤💛🖤
