“Katogo" is a go-to breakfast made from boiled green bananas and local spices. The word “Katogo” is taken from the Bantu language meaning ‘mixture’

Vultures are nature's clean-up crew! How?

They do not hunt, but rather feed on dead carcasses and natural waste. This helps in preventing the spread of diseases.

But their numbers are declining in the African ecosystem, mainly due to poisoning and illegal poaching.

7 out of 11 African vulture species have plummeted by 80–97%, and 4 species are now Critically Endangered.

Today is Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day and we’re here to talk about the Marimba.

Marimba, a low-pitched xylophone, has been a traditional musical instrument in Africa for centuries. Created in Zimbabwe, it is known as the ‘mother of song’ and was one of the pioneers of musical instruments.

It is built with a series of wooden bars arranged similarly to a piano. When struck with mallets, the sound reverberates throughout the entire body of the instrument.

And the sound? It is rich, melodious & soulful.

The Virunga is a chain of 8 volcanic mountains spread across three African countries - Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda.

Snack the Botswana way with Kabu (boiled dry roasted corn). This is a traditional popular dish prepared by boiling roasted African corn kernels and a little bit of salt to bring out the natural smokiness. The locals enjoy Kabu alongside curries or as a snack on its own.

On this side of the continent, you will find a number of traditional dishes with corn in it. Corn was first introduced into Africa around 1500 AD, and then it spread to every corner within a relatively short period and is now Africa's most dominant crop.

Zimbabwe 🇿🇼

Victoria Falls on your bucket list? 🌊

Because of the billowing clouds of mist all around, the locals named these majestic falls Mosi-oa-Tunya which means “The Smoke That Thunders” when translated from the Lozi Language.

Then, in 1855, David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer, came across the falls and re-named them “Victoria Falls” in honor of Queen Victoria.

This day was first celebrated in the year 2000, to raise awareness about protecting turtles, tortoises, and their disappearing habitats around the globe.

This initiative was taken by American Tortoise Rescue, an organization that has rehomed more than 4,000 of these precious creatures in the last 28 years.

Zanzibar 🏖️

Check out this historical landmark building called The House of Wonders or Beit Al Ajaib at Stone Town, Zanzibar.

It was built in 1883 for the second sultan of Zanzibar, Sultan Barghash. It was considered the “Palace of Wonders” as it was the first building in East Africa to have electricity and an elevator.

Zambia 🇿🇲

Let’s explore some of the rich cultural heritage of !

Mukanda - an annual initiation ritual for boys aged 8-12 takes place once a year at the beginning of the dry season. During this time, young boys leave their homes and live at an isolated bush camp to learn about their future roles as adults. Each boy is assigned a specific masked character which remains with them throughout the process. At the end of it, a ceremony known as the Makishi Masquerade takes place to celebrate and welcome back the boys as men.

This is ritual is celebrated by the Vaka Chiyama Cha Mukwamayi communities, which include the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi, and Mbunda peoples, who live in the northwestern and western provinces of Zambia.

Zimbabwe is home to the highest concentration of rock art in the southern Africa region. Most paintings were drawn by the San tribe — who arrived from the south of the continent during the Stone Age (2.6 million years ago).

In the rock painting here, you can spot a group “Hunting” scene, an indication of the tribe’s socio-religious system.

So we created our very own boutique travel consultancy that focuses on nature and wildlife experiences in Africa.

Here at bespoke getaway safaris, we aim to create the movie like safaris that families, kids, couples and even the solo travelers have always dreamed of. We are based in Dubai, but we service the entire world. We have a few set packages to choose from or give you an idea of what to expect, but there are no limits to what is possible.
