Kyrgyzstan: the tower minaret is all that remains of this ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Called the Burana Tower, it used to be twice as tall, but an earthquake toppled it. The site has spectacular snowy peaks in the background and pre-Islamic gravestone markers in the foreground.

Beautiful Bantaey Srei temple, my favorite of all the Angkor complex, for its intricate carved pink sandstone details. Bantaey Srei was a Hindu (shivaite) temple - a place of worship, and a pilgrimage site.

www.btsadventures.com
The temple dates to the 10th century and was the subject of a celebrated case of art theft when André Malraux stole four devatas in 1923 (he was soon arrested, and the figures were returned). www.btsadventures.com

Little-known Kyrgyzstan is home to exquisite textiles like these wool felted shyrdaks (rugs for a yurt) in Bishkek’s newly revamped National Museum. Below are mats or screens also for yurts, with wool yarn wrapped around reeds, on a weighted warp loom. Rocks weigh the warp down and keep it taut; same ingenious technique used by northwest coast Native American groups!

Several spaces left on the fabulous Turkey textile, archeology and cuisine tour!
In early February of 2023, eastern Turkey suffered an earthquake that led to many fatalities and the destruction of several cities.
We at Behind the Scenes feel that persisting with travel to Turkey (to the opposite/western side of the country and far from the earthquake area), sends a positive and encouraging message to the Turkish people, in addition to helping financially.

This 'Off the Beaten Path' trip starts and ends in Istanbul and goes in a big loop down to the turquoise Mediterranean coast.

Textiles & Festival Tours

Arts and Festival Adventures: Travel with the Experts!

Behind the Scenes Adventures has been taking textile and festival fanatics to international destinations for 25 years. Relax and leave the planning to us! We organize eco-friendly tours “behind the scenes” to meet and learn from artists, knitters, weavers, potters, Carnival dancers, musicians, textile printers and designers, costume makers, etc. Trips often include a festival, cultural sites and hands-on workshops. We have new trips to Bhutan and Uzbekistan (full for this year!) and soon we’ll have 2020-2021 dates on the website for those, plus Morocco, Peru and more.
