📆 July is flying by!

Since Colorado, we've traveled through Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee!

✴Highlights: Kayaking with one of our daughters in Mammoth Cave NP, Gem mining/digging for crystal points in Arkansas (and soaking in another hot spring!), pontoon boating in Oklahoma and sightseeing in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

We live in a beautiful country!

⬆️Adjusting our Altitudes in Colorado!

This place has it all! We arrived in Estes Park which is a few minutes from one of the entrances to Rocky Mountain National Park. We set up near town and amenities- elevation 7500ft.

We again packed in as many activities as humanly possible. 😂 George took a guided fly fishing trip - and he caught fish! 🐟 () Thanks Ben!

ATVing at 9500+ elevation was incredible! With the rain the day before = mud puddles! The best part! Half day independent ride, so much fun driving the mountain trails. ()

I took two interesting art workshops in town; Wire Wrapped Rings and Landscape Alcohol Inks. Great local experience. () Eclectic shop full of local artists creations plus classes to create yourself.

Rock Climbing was a more adventurous excursion. Years ago I did this in gyms and was excited to do it in the wild! We hired guides who took us out cragging. This was legit! We did three different climbs plus repelling. Hours later, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Top notch outfitters. Many Thanks Jason & Luke! ()

Another passion of mine is rockhounding. The shop here was like a candy store! I bought a few pieces (Aventurine, Blue Calcite, polychrome Jasper) and enjoyed their outdoor space. Plan an hour or so to grab a drink next door and sit by the lake out back. The ducks love being fed.
()

We recommend the restaurants The Rock Inn and Smokin' Dave's BBQ. 😋

Tips:
*****
•Either before your arrival or day of, book your excursions. Sometimes places are closed weekdays or booked.

•Do call ahead to get on the restaurant's wait list.

•Experience altitude issues? Up your water and potassium with dried fruits. Oh! Canned oxygen is a thing! Pick it up at the grocery to have on hand.

•Reserve your entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park online. Go to Reserve America online asap. Read up on entrance availability if you don't get in on the passes. Plan on the wee morning hours.

•Gather your provisions and do your laundry before arrival here. Slim pickins'.

Colorado is filled with beauty and outdoor activities! 😍

🤠 After the Tetons we visited several other Wyoming towns;

➡️Evanston (best laundromat ever!)
➡️Rawlins (awesome church!)
➡️Cheyenne (Curt Gowdy State Park is highly recommended!)

(I think we hit all four corners of Wyoming!)

Along the way we hiked, hand-fed bison from a train, learned about rodeos and caught up on laundry.

When we travel we have about two weeks worth of laundry to catch up on so it takes awhile. I usually bring something to read while I wait. It was here that I met an older gentleman doing his laundry. We talked for quite awhile and I learned he was a local sheep ranch hand originally from Peru. His stories about driving sheep and cattle, being an interpreter for other newbie Peruvian ranch hands and much more made the time pass quickly.

While we miss our friends and family back home, meeting people from all over the world enriches our travels. RVing definitely puts you into the local culture!

Next stop, the Rockies!

📍GRAND TETON, Part 2

On we went to another gorgeous campground within the park- Gros Ventre. This campground is approximately 9 miles from Jackson, Wyoming the town where you have a big selection of stores and restaurants. Highly recommend both!

From here we enjoyed a 2 hour horseback ride with a true outfitter. The trail took us through creeks and up (smallish) mountains. The wildflowers were beginning to bloom!🌼

We took the boat over to Jenny Lake and hiked up to a hidden waterfall. Fun!

Hiking the Taggert Lake Trail loop was another highlight. Inclines and views! Allow 2+ hours with lunch and photo ops. We use trekking poles and find them helpful for balance on these rocky trails.👣

Everywhere you look there is beauty! I could go on and on...The Tetons were tough for us to say goodbye to.😭 It is a park we fell in love with! Have you been? If not I hope you will someday.

Moose
Bear
Deer
Pika

Part 1.

Where to begin?! Our first week here we set up at Colter Bay Campground located in Grand Teton. Great Campground with lots of nearby amenities in the "village" 10 minutes away.

The drive from the north was amazing! Lots of winding roads.

After set up we set out to see the area. Huge lines of cars bordered the streets with folks looking for wildlife. They had chairs out, cameras with lens longer than my arm and binoculars. Apparently Grizzly #399 and her 4 cubs were spotted! She's the parks current Rockstar!🌟

Up at Jackson Lodge (less than 10 min drive) we scheduled a Float Trip down the Snake River. They provided transportation from the Lodge and back. Allow a few hours for all. We met another couple on the trip that we now consider friends. The four of us hung out together for several days. Miss you Ron and Jen!😭

The next day, up at the crack of dawn, we toured Yellowstone and the Geysers. This was about a 90 minute drive from Colter. Old Faithful and the surrounding area is walkable. If you go inside the building there, you can get a schedule of the eruptions, visit the gift store and find take away☕ coffee, snacks.

After Old Faithful we drove to and hiked up to the Grand Prismatic. 🌈 Gorgeous! Norris Basin(?), Artist Point & many other scenic stops filled our time. We used the Travel & Audio guide by, "We're in the Rockies". It was a tremendous help plus it enriched our visit. (We bought one for Yellowstone and one for Grand Teton. ) This was a FULL day!

From Colter Bay you can kayak on Jackson Lake. A highlight! We have kayaks but you can rent them. Go early, before the afternoon winds begin.

So much more to post...stay tuned!

🔥 Hot Springs!

Glacier N.P. was hard to say goodbye to, but on we headed to Bozeman.

This campground is right next-door to the hot springs complex. When you register you receive a wrist band to access the springs your entire visit.😊 (Check their website for times of closure.) Oh- the campground gave "sack breakfasts " each morning, so thoughtful. Yogurt, danish, hard boiled eggs, trail mix. Decent sites, too.

The over 100 year old hot springs complex has 12 different pools, some indoors, some out. All different temperatures. We tried them all but the cold ones were a challenge! There is access to a steam room and dry sauna included but a fee for the fitness area. Some nights have live music! 🎶

About 15 minutes away is downtown Bozeman. We enjoyed this area of restaurants, pubs and outfitter shopping. Even found a delicious Thai tea.

☆Take Away Tips for the Hot Springs ☆

Bring:
▪︎Water bottle
▪︎Shower gel
▪︎Cash for kombucha
▪︎Change of clothes or cover-up
▪︎non-slip shoes
▪︎Ask for free towel at check-in
▪︎No alcohol sold or permitted

Consider an after dinner soak- you'll sleep so well!

N A T I O N A L P A R K!!

Seriously. This postcard, I mean scenery, is mind-blowing!

The campground had mountain views that we gawked at all evening. Remember, it stays light out until about 10pm.

We visited in May so about 14 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun-Road (a 50 mile nail biting turn road) was plowed. We drove up to see Jackson Glacier Overlook, then parked where the vehicle barriers were and hiked up the road several miles. This was allowed and pretty special to have no crowds. ❄Snowbanks edged the road and made for dramatic views.

The next day we visited Lake McDonald for a narrated boat tour. ⚓ Even saw a bear on the shoreline! Tipping the guide is appreciated.

The Lodge offered walk up food and drinks to enjoy on their back deck area. This area is actually the prettiest side as it was built in the days where travelers arrived by boat for their stay.

We stayed on the east side of the park, where it has a casual hiker vibe. We visited the west side too, where more conveniences are available. That is the more touristy side. Visiting both sides is best in our opinion.

📣Take Away Tips:
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
▪︎Visit, it's gorgeous.
▪︎Plan activities/excursions when you have cell/internet service.
▪︎Buy fuel/water/food before you arrive. We paid over $4.00 for a gallon of water 💧
▪︎Learn about Winds. How to drive/tow in them, hike, set up camp, etc.
▪︎Keep extra everything in your vehicle with you. Hats, jackets, wind breakers, snacks, water, camera batteries, lipbalm with sunscreen, power cords...pack your life, 😆

Try to stay as long as you can. 5 days wasn't enough for us but weather altered our arrival.

KOA East Glacier Campground. Fantastic camp store/gift shop.
Recommended if you are the self-sufficient type.😊

❄ This is where the weather got interesting! We did not want to tow in the snow- yes snow in May - so we arrived a day earlier here and stayed a day later.

The snow was not a simple flurry or dusting, it was 4-6 inches over a few days. We (slightly) freaked out!

We made the best of it. Ate at diner before the snow, where George loved his local beef burger. Then we went on a scavenger hunt for a heated water hose.

When we ventured out in the snow the following day, we ate our first delicious brick oven pizza at Artisan Pizza, since hitting the road. Their Mediterranean salad was flavorful and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. ❤ How surreal to just sit in front of a wall of glass watching snow fall after having sunburns last week?

The next day we found a post office to mail out family birthday gifts. Uphill, through the snow, haha. We mailed our packages then searched out a bbq place we heard about, . It did not disappoint! We arrived@ 2pm and they were down to pulled pork only. They began the day with 1000 lbs. of meat! 🍖ProTip: Go early and add mac & cheese.

By Saturday the snow was melting so we checked out waterfalls at Great Springs State Park (pics above). Hiked a couple miles up to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center after visiting the trout hatchery. Beautiful!
The center offers a detailed museum tour of the journey Lewis & Clark took to discover the West. Allow a few hours here. Beautiful architecture. Closed Mon/Tue. Followed with Alaskan seafood for dinner.

Sunday was housekeeping & reset day. Monday = laundry. So.much.fun. 🙄

But hey, Glacier National Park is next! Yay!

Another great private campground! 7th Ranch Campground, (named after the 7th calvary, under Lt.Col.George A.Custer).

A few things set this camp "store" apart from where we've traveled so far.

☆ Fresh frozen meals are offered for purchase from a local Mennonite commercial kitchen. We ate delicious quiche and chicken enchiladas. 😋 Also, their freezer is filled with Montana ice cream! At check-in you are offered a free treat. (Chocolate ice cream sandwiches- yum!)

We chose this campground for it's close proximity to the grounds of the Battle of Little Big Horn. The grounds have a huge national cemetery for veterans (Remember them this Memorial Day), and a self paced driving tour with historical audio info. Plan at least an hour for the driving tour. Hiking here is easy and thought provoking. Bring water, snacks and sun protection - it's wide open here in BIG SKY country.

Felt great to be out in the sunshine, 90°! 🌞

But as you will see on the next post, the weather was about to surprise us!

🇺🇸 Mt.Rushmore in the rain. No way we would miss this coming this far!

Very wet, the presidents looked to be crying or have runny noses.😂

Next was a true touristy visit to Bear Country USA. This is a drive thru wildlife park. Many different wildlife live here.

We ate at the Powder House Lodge...and I tried a bite of bison, elk and venison. They offer a skewer with all three meats. It was okay, but I don't miss red meat. Big & busy restaurant so call ahead.☎️

🦬 Wildlife at your door! Custer State Park is a MUST visit. Wow! So.many.animals.

The bison (don't pet the fluffy cows, as the locals say) are huge and you can see them up close driving the wildlife loop. This is 18 miles but takes a long time due to animal jams and the sights.👀 Bring binoculars, water and snacks. This loop was a true highlight of our visit.

Wind Cave National Park was okay, but not much happening in these covid days. The local kids put together a bison mural using the tops from various containers. Really cool!

Crazy Horse Memorial was a short visit nearby. The museum offered insight into the history of Crazy Horse.🐴

We ate at Blue Bell Lodge on the wildlife loop. Love the log cabins around here!
Time to rest up for tomorrow!

👉We made it to South Dakota!

After set up we walked the town and ended up eating at a local place called Charley's. My first walleye dinner - I enjoyed it.

We walked down to the Missouri River so George could continue his tradition of dipping his orange hat into various bodies of water. 💧 I may have found an arrowhead on the shoreline.

The next morning we packed up to leave but stopped at the nearby Lakota Museum. What an interesting visit. We learned about the Lakota and the lands, how they lived, etc. They have a children's school here too. We recommend stopping here.📌

After the tour we headed out towards Badlands National Park. Of course we had to stop at the famous Wall Drug Store along the route!!! It's an icon, after all. And hey, I bought slippers!🛍

🥳 This is probably the coldest birthday this Floridian had to date. 40°'s in May!

Celebrated with a steak dinner at the only restaurant nearby ...at Hard Rock Casino, Sioux City. The slots took our 💰 but we enjoyed the evening.

Enjoyed a group facetime call from our kids wishing George a Happy Birthday and me a Happy Mother's Day! 🌷

🐄 This.Place.Is.Gorgeous!

What a well run and designed campground. We love this place! ⭐ Farm field views, cows, hills...amazing. The owners are friendly and truly care about having you as their guest. Great camp store, too.

Within about 36 miles you can tour the movie set for, " Field of Dreams." (In Iowa)
No corn growing this time of year but interesting place.🌽

We would enjoy coming back to this campground for a longer visit. Highly recommended!

🍷 This Harvest Host (our first!) came at the perfect time, given our recent wheel bearing fiasco.🙄

What a fun winery in Illinois! We parked next to a white barn overlooking the fields. They have over 250 acres!

We enjoyed a tasting and bought two bottles, one red, one white.

Such a relaxing vista...ahhh

16/05/2021

⚠️ Nothing like a little overheated wheel bearing to get our attention! We literally pulled into the camp registration area, with a Good Samaritan following us, as this occurred. Good timing!

That evening we contacted a mobile RV tech who came out to fix it. He replaced the wheel hub and brake assembly, checked all other wheels/hubs, repacked them and we bought an extra wheel hub, bearing assembly to have on hand. @$500. In the dark. In the 🌧. We were so grateful!

The owners of Okaw Valley Kampground are especially personable! Thanks Barb and Gary for your help!!😇
P.S. Only campground open all year between Indianapolis and St.Louis.

🌿 Kentucky hikes in Mammoth Cave National Park- wow! We shared several awesome days here with our daughter and son-in-law.

Here we visited Lost River Cave attraction, Mammoth Cave National Park and surrounding areas.

The cave systems are incredible from what I'm told....way too confining for me. There are several at Mammoth but due to covid restrictions only one self guided tour is available. The air that escaped the tunnel area felt like air conditioning! Wear your layers.

Kentucky is so very green. The hills and farmland are soothing to the soul. And the farm fresh dairy products-including 🍦were delicious!

George enjoyed the Corvette Museum while our daughter spoiled me with lunch at a trendy Ramen spot.🥢

Another fun stop on our way west!
