Some history behind the word "Umpqua."

Some history behind the word "Umpqua."

The word "Umpqua" is used as a name for local Native American peoples, the largest river in Douglas County, and our very own National Forest! Did you know that this word is a Native American term? There are many theories about its origin and meanings.

• Umpqua may have been the name of a chief who conquered tribes who previously inhabited the Umpqua Valley. His followers then called themselves Umpquas in his honor.
• Umpqua is an Indian word for “thundering water”. This definition was provided by Meshak (Mace) Tipton, the last Umpqua chief, in the late 1800s. “Umpqua” has also been described as meaning “dancing water” or “bring across the river”
• “Umpqua” may be an English given name for local Native Americans. They actually referred to themselves as Etnemitane, as Tl'uu-dv-nee-yu (prairie people), or as Dv-nee-yu (“people”).

Have any stories been passed down to you about your family's history and origins? Have you heard any other theories about the word Umpqua? Thank you for celebrating Native American Heritage Month with us!

Snow at Crater Lake!

Crater Lake National Park is characterized by very snowy winters (and falls and springs, and sometimes summers). Snow plow drivers work tirelessly to keep Highway 62 and the road to Rim Village open throughout the winter. Expect to encounter snow removal equipment at any time during your visit. Plow...

Mountain Mama Lodge is reopening to the public this week! We look forward to seeing our guests, and we are forever grateful to the firefighters who left their homes and loved ones to come save our little community.
Dry Creek would likely not still be here without the swift intervention of fire crews.

Specifically we saw fire engines from, and would like to thank:
Linn County Task force 14,
Harrisburg Fire,
Philomath Fire & Rescue,
Monroe Fire,
Adair Fire,
Albany Fire,
Portland Fire,
Gresham Fire,
DFPA,
US Forest service crews and incident management teams

And many, many others. They had an engine parked at nearly every structure, it was nothing short of amazing.

Mountain Mama Lodge, and Dry Creek were directly in the path of the "Jack Fire." These brave men and women stepped up and fought with everything they had, preparing to fight that fire structure to structure if needed. Luckily they turned the fire away from homes and businesses, just under a mile from the western border of Dry Creek.

Thank you also to the Dry Creek Store for allowing us to put this sign at their location next door to us where it could easily be seen.

THANK YOU FIREFIGHTERS!!!

We hope highway 138 can be reopened by this weekend, and Mountain Mama Lodge will be ready for guests again soon after.

Please, wherever you are, reconsider the necessity of ANY activity that may cause a spark. Fire crews are spread extremely thin due to unprecedented fire activity.

The State of Oregon had never before invoked the conflagration act to combat wildfire before July 15th, today, the close of July 14th we have done it a minimum of 5 times, just this year.

Mountain Mama Lodge and Dry Creek were threatened by fire again. On July 5th a fire started at Milepost 42, about 4 miles away. The "Jack Fire" spread quickly in very dry brush, up a hillside and into the forest. Within hours it was burning out of control.

Response to the fire was immediate, first from local responders, and then from all over the state of Oregon. By 24 hours in firefighters from Harrisburg, Philomath, Adair, Monroe, and others that make up Linn County Strike force 14 were stationed all over Dry Creek. Crews worked day and night to prepare structures for the fire's arrival, and if required, were ready to fight the fire building to building. Luckily they didn't have to. Fire lines built by crews back burning just a few hundred feet west of Dry Creek held, and turned the fire South, and away from Dry Creek.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to these men and women, who dropped what they were doing to go fight a fire in a community far away from their own. Their swift, professional response and dedication to their work is the reason that Dry Creek and Mountain Mama Lodge are still standing to see another day.
