Longwood in historic Natchez, MS is an absolute historic time capsule that deserves a place on all Americans’ must see bucket list.

The 6 story 30,000 SF octagonal mansion was being built when the civil war began in 1861. So many of the skilled craftsmen were from the north. As soon as they heard the war was starting they laid down their tools and walked away to return home to fight for the union.

Only the basement was finished so the family moved into it and NONE of the other floors inside were finished. Fortunately the exterior was enclosed so the building has stood the ravages of time. But had it been finished none of the brick would have been exposed as it would have been plastered and scored to resemble stone of some kind.

In 1970 it was given to the Pilgrimage Garden Club (my club) by some fine Texans 🤠 who saved it … with the stipulation it never be finished. It now stands as an unparalleled time capsule of grand architecture at the beginning Civil War.

I first visited when I was 22 so I’ve been taking tours of Longwood for 35 years and I don’t plan to stop! Can you tell we bring everyone who visits to this amazing home?

Sooooo many incredible historic homes in Natchez but it you can see one… it has to be Longwood!

There is ALWAYS a great reason to visit Natchez, Mississippi!! As if it weren't enough to enjoy all the incredible food and beautiful homes and history... Natchez is always hosting a party or festival... And no festival is more fun that the annual Food & Wine Fest!
