Temps were above freezing yesterday so Riggs and I headed to the river for a fish mish. Lots of littles and a couple rippers made for a fun couple hours with cracky crackerson the spazz lab.

Pretty self explanatory. Don’t be that guy!
Talking about the steps we are taking to prevent the spread of Covid-19 on our guide trips as we get back to business. We’re committed to providing our guests with a safe, relaxing and fun experience while adhering to social distancing, PPE, and disinfectant recommendations. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns, this is an evolving situation and we’re doing our best to keep up with it. We can’t wait to see you all on the water!
Now we’re going to put the forward cast and backcast together. This will help you work on timing and learning to shoot line.
Here’s a basic introduction to roll casting. One of the most useful casts out there, the roll cast is easy to learn and is a powerful tool when mastered. Draw the rod tip slowly back high over your shoulder, pause to let the line sag and rest on the water, then hit the hammer and watch her rip!
Here’s a brief intro into handling trout. I’ll get more into detail on this in a future post. The major points: WET HANDS!!!! NO GLOVES!!!! Take em off, I don’t care if they’re wet, they still jack up the fish. Only keep them out of the water as long as you can hold your breath. Try to avoid touching their lateral line, it’ll help them be a little more calm in your hands.
The basics of mending. First and foremost, it’s two moves: #1 lift to break surface tension and to get the rod into position. #2 Use a hard snap of the rod to mend the line one way or the other.
Learning to use your thumb for power in the cast and “ring that doorbell”
The two most common mistakes I see with casting are both on the backcast. Breaking the wrist and coming too far back, and not waiting long enough on the pause at the end of the backcast. In fly casting the backcast is just as important as the forward, let’s get this crucial component figured out!
