I joined Datshiane Navanayagam and Yunxin Li to chat with The Conversation about women’s contributions to medicine which have often been overshadowed or erased from history.

I spoke about some of the forgotten stories of Britain’s Black Nurses and the challenges I faced researching this history for my latest book.

The Conversation podcast brings together two women from different corners of the globe, connected by a shared passion, experience, or expertise.

After I’d finished writing The Story of Britain’s Black Nurses, I took a break to relax. One day I was strolling along a beach in Barbados and wondered about the sea grapes that grow on some of the beaches.

I never gave them much thought before but I wondered about this plant and its many forgotten uses (apart from its use as a shrub on the beach).

One of the things I really enjoy about being a non-fiction writer is learning and viewing things around me in a totally new light.

Three clues:
A ground-breaking African American actress born to parents from Nevis

In 2016, she was awarded the US Presidential Medal of Honor by then-US President Barack Obama.

She has a whole chapter dedicated to her in The Story of Afro Hair, 5,000 Years of History, Fashion and Styles.

Happy World Afro Day!

15 September is WORLD AFRO DAY It’s a global day of celebration and liberation for Afro hair.

Today, I’m reflecting on the risk I took in writing The Story of Afro Hair, 5,000 Years of History, Fashion and Styles.
It’s unusual to tell Black history through popular (and unpopular!) hairstyles worn at various times throughout the ages.
I hadn’t seen any other book take this approach. Nowadays most publishers are really cautious about trying anything different (understandably) so I’m really grateful to my publisher for taking the chance too!

Most of all, I’m grateful to you readers. From What is Afro hair type? to Why we wear the hairstyles we do, you got the concept right away. 👏👏👏

There’s still some way to go to improve knowledge about human diversity but with education, we’ll get there!

We’re just 3 weeks away from my book launch date.

I still can’t believe it! It’s been such a long time between the day I first saw the book cover on screen to receiving my first physical author copies.

I’m keeping one close to me on the sofa here 😂😂😂

Catching up with friends and family in the evening is a nice treat to myself after a day of admin!
