Happy World Afro Day!

15 September is WORLD AFRO DAY It’s a global day of celebration and liberation for Afro hair.

Today, I’m reflecting on the risk I took in writing The Story of Afro Hair, 5,000 Years of History, Fashion and Styles.
It’s unusual to tell Black history through popular (and unpopular!) hairstyles worn at various times throughout the ages.
I hadn’t seen any other book take this approach. Nowadays most publishers are really cautious about trying anything different (understandably) so I’m really grateful to my publisher for taking the chance too!

Most of all, I’m grateful to you readers. From What is Afro hair type? to Why we wear the hairstyles we do, you got the concept right away. 👏👏👏

There’s still some way to go to improve knowledge about human diversity but with education, we’ll get there!

We’re just 3 weeks away from my book launch date.

I still can’t believe it! It’s been such a long time between the day I first saw the book cover on screen to receiving my first physical author copies.

I’m keeping one close to me on the sofa here 😂😂😂

You can listen to The History of Britain's Black Airmen here:
Since the early 20th century, Black airmen played vital roles protecting Britain.

Listen to The History of Britain's Black Airmen from Warfare. When you think of some of the remarkable feats of airpower throughout history, you might think of the Dambusters, or the Battle of Britain. But what about some of the untold stories of Britain's remarkable black airmen? Since the early 20...

Although I prefer to be writing, staying on top of admin is a necessary part of a writer's life (unless you have a PA of course!)

Catching up with friends and family in the evening is a nice treat to myself after a day of admin!

If you're in London this weekend, you can join me this Saturday at the Music, Jerk 'n' Tings family festival.

I love joining Promoting our Heritage for some of their summer events. It's nice to meet readers, have a chat and sign books.

I'll be at the Promoting our Heritage stall at Music, Jerk 'n' Tings this Saturday, 10 August from 3.30pm to 6 pm.

This family friendly festival is held at the Horniman Museum. I've never been to this festival before and I'm really looking forward to it.

Since giving up my '9 to 5' job (in Nov 2022) I'm finding it much easier to take breaks.

Life is so different as a full-time author.

It's completely up to me how I schedule my hours and my work. And I can even combine my work with a Caribbean holiday. I know it's not for everyone but I really enjoy the flexibility.

Did you know that I also give Lunch and Learn talks for adults?

Everyone of all ages can benefit from learning about Black history. I do lots of research when I write history books and most of it goes into my children's books. But there's always lots to discuss for both adults and children alike.

My 'lunch and learn' adult talks are most popular during Black History Month but I love to share my knowledge any time of the year.

To learn about (untold) stories inspired by Black History, visit my website (details in bio). kandacechimbiri.com

My books are available from all good book retailers in the UK and Eire. Outside the UK, please check out Awesome Books.

Have you tried any of the new Fenty Hair products by Rihanna yet?

In this photo you can see one of the new monuments in Bridgetown (capital of Barbados) which honours the Barbadian singer, who recently launched a new haircare brand that caters to ALL hair types. This is very rare!

In my book The Story of Afro Hair, you can learn so much about Black hair type and the interesting history of hair styling and products over 5,000 years . Rihanna’s latest venture is definitely a new chapter in the history of haircare!

After seeing posts on from .kelly and , I'm sold!

Don’t forget to DM me or share your thoughts in the comments on the Curl Defining Cream and the because I'm thinking of trying them out soon.

I had such a wonderful time chatting with The History Hotline. The podcast was started to have honest conversations about Black history and how it impacts the world we live in. They focus on the facets of Black history that are usually ignored or overlooked.

We talked about the importance of sharing ancient African history as well as modern Black British history. I loved talking about my favourite artefacts in the British Museum, why I wanted to write The Story of Afro Hair and how it's still needed and, of course, all things Windrush.

This is also my opportunity to thank everyone helping and supporting me on my mission to share Black history with children of all backgrounds.

I hope you enjoy my latest interview. Please let me know your thoughts.

I'm so disappointed that this afternoon's children's workshop at Brockwell Bounce has been cancelled.

Please see photo attached from the festival organisers with full explanation.

Hopefully the organisers can find another date as I know so many people were looking forward to this free family festival. And hopefully the weather won't let us down next time!

I'm often asked for my advice. I'm so happy to have the opportunity to share what I've learned along the way about the pros and cons of self-publishing versus traditional publishing and how to choose which route to go! I've made some good choices and some not-so-good ones along the way from self-published to traditionally published author! I can't wait to share them!
