The Diamond Route was initiated as a result of a partnership between E Oppenheimer & Son and De Beers Consolidated Mines in 2002. This partnership saw the launch of the Oppenheimer De Beers program at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and its establishment as a project in 2003. The program is a broad based initiative utilizing skills development, education, research, and
monitoring and tourism development to deliver a range of environmental and socio-economic benefits to communities in and surrounding ten E Oppenheimer & Son, De Beers’s, Ponahalo and Debswana conservation areas. E O & Son, De Beers, Ponahalo and Debswana are committed to the conservation and responsible management of biodiversity on their properties Diamond Route shows this commitment in concrete ways, underpinning in a credible way the company Reports to Stakeholders, whilst supporting De Beers’s Group of Companies’ Purpose, Vision and Values. E Oppenheimer & Son, De Beers’s, Ponahalo and Debswana have agreed to establish an institutional structure which will represent and further the aims and objectives of the Diamond Route. The Diamond Route has been set up as at trust for non-profit.
