Most of my 3 days in the Craggy Garden area of the parkway last week were spent in the fog. I took advantage and was happy to capture many of these forest scenes. This image has all of the elements I was looking for: wind swept grass, spring greens, and an inviting singletrack trail leading off into the fog. You are looking at the Sagittarius arm of our Galaxy. The dark band in the middle is known as the Great Rift. It is a collection of dust clouds located between our Solar System and the Milky Way that blocks out our view of the Galactic Core. This Dark Rift has been observed for thousands of years and has had many mythical strings attached to it in that time. The Mayans called it the mouth of the cosmic monster. When i look at it, I feel small but connected. I am reminded of just how big and amazing our creator is. We are a part of something unimaginably big and complex and I find comfort in that! This is a single 13 second exposure. I used my headlamp to paint the foreground with light and processed it through Adobe Camera Raw and CS6. If you like this image, please share and comment!
