Day 81

We made it home💜

Just in time for Kieran’s 23rd Birthday!

Yesterday we got in some last minute visits. Saw dad and visited mom’s bench! Picked up our mug shelf from the woodshop where dad made it.

Went tor a dental appointment, and then headed out with Susan to visit Shelley. Enjoyed visiting with the two of them!

We navigated through some narly traffic (thank you lower mainland) to have lunch at Dublin Crossing in Langley.

Craig picked me up and we went to pick up Ocean and then headed out with Wayne and Steph for a catch up!

Hooked up Ocean and we drove off in Pearl for the final leg!

Arrived home after a sunset sail! Arrived home to a beautiful welcome home basket from my friends Mel and Britt.💜

Dogs and Kieran are happy to see us!

Feels so good to be home!

Day 80

Had a visit with Craig’s mom this morning here at the RV park. My friend Kathryn also stopped by for a coffee and chat and it was good to catch up.

Went over to Surrey to visit my friend who is at Surrey Memorial and my spirits were lifted to see her doing better answered prayers.

Back at the RV park we had a visit with the Dalmans and had lots to chat about as they head to Cape Breton and Halifax next week. It will be fun to follow them, seeing them enjoy places we have been and seen! Have fun Rob & Ros!

Enjoyed a quick drive by visit from Dad at the RV park too!

Made a yummy steak dinner to share with our friends! I Wanted to Thank Nickolas for managing Griffins while I was away and for bringing me all the daycare stuff I’ll need to prepare for September!

Great way to spend our last night..a card game of golf … with Donna winning it all!

Close to “home” and where our journey began April 14th with our family and friends!

Day 79

Hanging out with cousins, breakfast, cribbage and good times.

Today we were able to fit in a visit with Breton and meet Isla a brand new addition to the Yost family. Thanks for the snuggles.

We drove to Burnaby and had a wonderful dinner at the Roy’s home. Complete with some of the scrappin 7 to welcome us home on this Canada Day. Great company and conversation with some of our friends really makes us feel at home! We’ve missed this part of our life. So much gratitude to the Roys for hosting and welcoming us back.

What a beautiful evening of catching up and being together. 💜💜💜

Ended our evening with. Visit with Dad! Now I really feel home. 🏠 just two more sleeps until we head to the ferry and our home sweet home in Sooke.

Also made a quick stop to give a friend a hug. She gave me a purple sweet pea which smells like heaven! 💜

Day 78

Spend in Abbotsford with my cousins Rick and Carol. A morning visit to Surrey Memorial with 4 of the scrappin 7. Flowers a homemade card and encouragement for our sweet friend.

Headed to White Rock to meet Carol and Rick and walked down the pier. The longest in Canada! A good addition to our cross Canada journey. Drinks and Appies at Charlie Don’t Surf. back to Casa Rick’s for a canasta blow out followed by the movie IF. I loved it. The character BLUE who is PURPLE made it for me.

Day 77

Today was spent with our cousins Rick and Carol and friend Kirk. We enjoyed a slow morning with waffles and fruit salad.

I had news a friend wasn’t well and was in hospital, so we were able to go and see them in hospital! God’s timing is perfect. Arriving back “home” allowed us to be here and connnect in person with our friends.

After running a few errands we returned to Rick’s and we went for dinner at a bistro recommended by our friend Randall! It was absolutely delicious and we loved it.

It felt so strange to not sleep in the trailer last night after so many nights on the road. We are beyond grateful for family and friends and it feels good to be here on the lower mainland.

Day 76…

Spent the morning at Deception Pass West Beach before heading for the border. SUMAS border was quiet and we choose the LONG line but once we got the the wicket we breezed through.
Made it to cousin Ricks’s in Abbotsford. Her for a couple days. Amazing prime dinner and apple pie for dessert! Always feel so spoiled when we are here!

Day 74 & 75

We left Grand Coulee Dam on Wednesday morning and headed north then west on HWY 20 through the Cascades. What an amazing drive high into the mountains. Craig had really wanted to do this route and he was very pleased with the scenic vistas and the winding road.

We arrived in Winthrop and made the (BEST) decision to stop and check it out. It was an d western town with lots of old buildings and fun shops! An actual glass blower, iron and leather working shops and a sweet shop named SHERI’s🥴 yes we got cinnamon buns!

It was a great break in our drive. And just before we got into the mountain pass! A must see if you are on HWY 20.

We were thrilled a few days ago to find a camping spot at Deception Pass for Wednesday and Thursday night. A Favourite spot of hours! We have rented there lots but never been with Ocean.

Perfect spot, water and electrical, in the forest. We arrived in the rain, it stopped and we BBQed and had a fantastic meal. Then it started to rain and we cozied up for the evening.

Awoke to sunshine ! So grateful as we spent our entire day beach hopping. Started at Deception Pass west beach and then We went to Bush Point, further down island than we have ever been. We packed a picnic lunch to eat on the beach. It was so quiet we had the entire place to ourselves and we found some sea glass!

Stopped for ice cream in Coupville ( fun fact when Craig and I were first dating Coupville was one of our first adventures) onto Fort Ebey beach. We have only done the fort in the past. Another gem!

Then went to Rosario beach and enjoyed the surf and the views. Headed back to the trailer for a quick stop and then back over to West Beach at Deception Pass. Craig watched fighter jets while I beach combed and found some really sweet pieces.

Deception Pass is a place we have camped with friends since our kids were little. I even lost Kieran in the woods for a brief time 10 minutes (panic situation for all involved) and lots of good memories of smores and hotdog roasting. Trying to stay warm in campfire bans …while it was raining, and rushing to the beach for sunsets too!

Day 73…

Our final week of this journey across Canada and back again. We’ve also been hoping back and forth between Canada and the US. Just keeping it real and fresh

While we loved being back in BC we did need to drop down to Spokane to visit the local Airstream dealer. We had one tire showing some ware so we needed to replace two (have to keep it even) and after spending the day there we are back in travel mode.

While waiting for OCEAN we went to Cor Duh Lane ( that is how the locals spell it… as seen on a sticker) we wandered around and enjoyed the quaint town atmosphere. Then we checked out the falls o. Spokane before picking up our trailer and heading west.

Left Spokane and we had to stop at the 10 mile, 25 mile and 50 miles markers to tighten the lug nuts. Once that was done we grabbed some groceries and dinner from Safeway and drove to Grand Coulee Dam!

We went to the dam and were excited to hear the light show was on at 10. We took our kids there when they were 14 and 7. Called Clayton while we were there!

We had a visit to Empire coffee before we left Nelson and a quick visit with Roz from Smidge Ceramics. A friend of Kieran’s.

Today we enjoyed a very beautiful drive from Nelson to the border crossing at Nelway. We had a short day to Spokane. We will check tomorrow with the local dealer about one of our tires. It seems to be wearing more than the other three. Our friend Brent has given us some things to check and ask about.

Tonight we are staying at a very posh RV park which is attached to the Northern Quest Resort and Casino! It’s very reasonable compared to our regular KOA’s. Paved pad, full hook ups and luxury showers! A little laundry again…and we enjoyed watching the Stanley Cup Final! We really wanted to see a Canadian team win. It’s been toooo long.

Day 71…

A beautiful drive through the mountains of British Columbia. We left Invermere and travelled to Fort Steel. The fort just opened last weekend and due to a staff shortage there was very little happening there.

Only the candy store had someone inside (to sell the candy). We enjoyed the wander about all the same. Lots of interesting signs to read and sights to enjoy. Thanks Lairds for the recommendation! It would have been more fun with Lindsay dressed in her sweet
era dress and apron.

We had another mandatory boat inspection today and were waved through! ( haha get it? Waved through!!!!) Then 45 minutes later we received a call asking us to come back for a more thorough look? Wait what? Or they could send someone on the 28th to Nelson to inspect them? Oiiiii we won’t be here on the 28th. Phone call was dropped because of the area… and we haven’t heard back!

We continued through the mountains and over a pass to reach Nelson. We are just here over night, having had dinner with Liam (Kieran’s partner) & his mom and Aunt. Tomorrow morning I hope to visit Smudge Ceramics (a classmate of Kieran’s) before we head out.

Nelson has a special spot in our hearts as Kieran lived here for a year. It is a beautiful mountain town with such a unique atmosphere.

Craig and I drove across BOB the big orange Bridge, had a treat at the old vintage DQ ( exact replica of the one that used to be at Burquitlam Plaza back in Coquitlam!) so fun.

Staying at Cool Waters RV park backed onto a rushing creek! Now that it is dark o thirty it really sounds like a rain storm!

Day SEVENTY????

Well… sitting in a little pizzaria in Invermere BC. So day 70 had us crossing back into our home province. Whoot!!! How cool is that?

We left Edmonton this morning. Our friend Lindsay stayed over in OCEAN with us and we shared an easy breakfast and great conversation before we headed out.

We apparently missed our turn off in Banff and ended up in Golden. Maybe it was the mountains, the glacier, the audio book? But we ended up driving the loooong way round. As Craig said… doesn’t really matter… we are safe.

Feels good to be back in BC and of course the views didn’t disappoint. We stopped at Kicking Horse Rest stop which we were at Exactly 9 weeks ago when we were headed East. So there is that😳

Truck and Trailer ( Ocean & Pearl) are running well and keeping us on route. 🥴 Our campsite tonight has no wifi so we found a little pizza place IYKYK 🍕🍕🍕

I enjoyed a ceasar salad and mini pizza, and Craig went with a special Hawaiian and classic garlic toast.

Then Craig and I played a couple games on line with Shelley! We also had our fourth kayak inspection, and an email from an Aquatic invasive species inspector! Tagged at the border, and told to get an inspection. However we had an inspection in Golden. Apparently South Dakota is a red flag for fresh water mussels??! Who knew !

We hope to kayak tomorrow and head to Nelson. We are looking forward to seeing Liam and Louise while we are there! (Perhaps a pottery purchase in my future?)

Day 69

We spent the day in Edmonton and enjoyed a visited with Leah , Landon & Mathew.

We ran a few errands and found some a pretzel Shack! Yum!

My friend Lindsay who lives about two hours from Edmonton drove to see us as well!

Lindsay stayed for dinner and we had BC Salmon , asparagus from her garden and some digby scallops! Delish.

Enjoyed a beautiful evening by the fire and made a few smores.

We are heading to BC today🎉🥰🇨🇦

68 bottles of beer on the wall… 68 bottle of beer. Just kidding no beer on the wall here. Just a few cans in the fridge.

We left Montana’s Glacier National Park and headed for the border. Feels great to be back in Canada. Waterton Lake was absolutely gorgeous! We enjoyed hang out and there and we came upon a jewelry shop that was closed but… Craig said isn’t that the goldsmith who made our wedding rings?

So yes in fact, Daniel Somerfeld who created our rings has a beautiful store here. It was closed but we called him. We ran into him in Port Moody last fall when Kieran was doing a GLENAYRE artisan event. What a sweet happenstance!

Drive north headed to Edmonton, and stopped to meet Amanda Campbell for a little nosh. Amanda is our friend’s daughter and she worked at Griffins for awhile. It was fun to see her excitement over moving back to Calgary with her teaching degree in hand! We are so proud of you Amanda!

Day 67…
We are still in St.Mary’s Montana near Glacier Park. Today we just did some touring around the park, marveling at the lakes, rivers and the majestic mountains. We opted to not go kayaking as it was windy and cold. We also skipped the boat ride for the same reason.

We drove the Road to the Sun as far as we could. It is still closed at this time of year because of elevation and weather. It was beautiful drive with many pull outs.

Came back to have lunch at the trailer and then headed out to another park entrance to check out a Lodge which was designed like a Swiss Alpine resort. All the staff were wearing liedierhausen.

We sat out on the veranda of the Lodge and took in the mountains and sunshine on our faces. Craig got a shirt and hat (happy Father’s Day 🥰) from the gift shop there.

We saw a mama moose , a deer, some antelope, a harry marmot, and lots of people. It’s the season now… and we are finding it a little more challenging to secure RV sites.

So far the wing it system has worked well for us.

Returned to the campground and Craig did his thing, I did laundry and had a Glorious hot shower. Craig made potatoe soup for dinner and it was yummy! Quick call with my book club and that wraps up day 67.

Day 66

Left Helena Montana this morning. Had our heat Pump running all night. Chilly in these here hills! Grabbed some groceries and stuff to make some Potatoe, Bacon Soup and we were off. Drive about 4 hours to our site just outside the entrance to Glacier National Park.

We are staying g here two nights before we head back into Canada . 🇨🇦

Today’s pictures are mostly taken from the truck while driving. The state of Montana is vast and beautiful and so wildly diverse! From cool rock formations to miles and miles of prairie as well, to the beautiful Rockies.

Tonight after some local Pizza we had a short drive to check out a boat tour for the morning, and had a game of TTR with Cam and Shelley online! (Rumor has it Graham was on team Cam)

Tomorrow marks two weeks til we load a ferry for Vancouver Island and Sooke. We are looking forward to the next two weeks of Adventure AND we are 👀 looking forward too!!!

Day 63-65

After visiting Devil’s Tower we drove about another 3.5 hours to arrive at Sheridan Wyoming. We arrived just at dusk and didn’t unhook as we were leaving early .

We got on the road and drove to the historical site of Custer’s Last Stand. We drove about 2 hours out of our way to make this visit. Fascinated by the history of Crazy Horse, the Lakota warrior , we wanted to take in more history and see where this battle unfolded.

It is a National memorial so our US park pass allowed us entrance. It has a very informative film followed by a dynamic 45 minute session by a very passionate historian! I was on the edge of my seat. To walk on the land where over 8000 Lakota people were living in a two mile settlement was sacred. To hear how the Lakota defeated Custer and his army was difficult to take in and the bloodshed and death overwhelming.

We took in the memorial site and have only a few photos as it was heavy to just experience the moment, imagining the battle, and bloodshed.

From there we drove about 4.5 hours to Yellowstone National Park! We felt lucky to have secured one night there. ( we really lucked out and got a Second night because of a cancellation.)

Saturday had been a long day, however we wanted to explore as much as we could so we went to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and saw the most incredible sights. The photos don’t look real. We saw mud pots and buffalo and so many tourists. Up to this point we haven’t experienced “crowds” really. Well that changed this weekend. Feel like everyone was at Yellowstone this weekend.

We spent Sunday driving the lower loop of Yellowstone which included Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Speing where the surrounding pool is orange yellow blue and green. Hard to catch it all with the steam! I’ll
Post a video of the steam! So so warm and it did t smell like the sulphuric areas! I think that the Grand Proamatic Spring was a highlight for both of us.

This national park is on a volcanic site and has thousands of of vents, bubbling pots and thermal sites. Which are deadly if you step or fall on the surrounding areas. Careful where you tread.

Absolutely Incredible sights and views. We saw waterfalls,lakes, forests, valleys with grazing buffalo and tourists double parking and fleeing their cars to chase a bear for photos. It was craziness! I guess when you have your own resident bear you know to just let them be.

Today we left Yellowstone and re-entered Montana for a travel day. We stopped in Helena for the night. In Yellowstone and here we have been running our heat pump vs our ac. Funny how much the weather changes in just days or even hours. The elevation in Yellowstone was over 7000 ft so we had snow driving out today. A lot of rain, and cool temps for today.

Day 62

We left Rapid City and stopped at Target for a few things. Some fruit, snacks and some extra socks for me. Stopped in Sturgin( a famous location for a motorcycle rally) for lunch! Tried Beef Tips… they were okay. Nothing to write home about.

We drove to Devils Tower. It was about 2 hours (there and back) off our route. When we got there we realized we wouldn’t be allowed to pull Ocean up to the upper parking.

We didn’t want to walk UPHILL for 2 miles and then another 1.6 around the base of the tower, so we unhooked ( honestly we have so much practice at this point it is quick) and locked her up and we drove up!

Craig was like we could just take a photo from here… and I was like what? We don’t drive all that way to take a picture and leave. He was being considerate as he didn’t think I’d want to do the walk. I was totally into it.

So glad we decided to take the time ! Although it meant we would arrive at our destination late we didn’t want to miss out on the awe inspiring experience.

Loved every minute and every step! Enjoy our photos. Wyoming is beautiful and there is only green fields and cows on rolling hills for hours.

We couldn’t figure out why the highway was so quiet… well I don’t think anyone really lives here.. or goes anywhere, other than their farms?

You can see forever and the sky gives you such an incredible show. Enjoy the views! We sure did!

Day 61

Today was pretty epic. South Dakota has some unbelievable beauty. From waterfalls and Corn palaces to Badlands & Black Hills. Granite mountains with American history. Some completed and some 75 years in with a miraculous story and ongoing dedication.

Today we went back to Keystone and checked out an antique store, a glass blower and a chainsaw sculpture outdoor area.

Wallets intacted we headed out for a day of exploring in our Pearl! Near Mount Rushmore in the Blackhills there are three amazing byways you can drive.

The Iron Mountain Drive, Needles Highway & The Wildlife Loop which is part of Custer State Park.

Oh my goodness… Iron mountain drive was like being on a ride at Disneyland. The curvy pigtail switchbacks and wooden bridges were fantastic!

Then came the tunnels. Some of them less than 9.5 feet wide and only about a foot of clearance with the kayaks on the roof. ( we left Ocean safely in our campsite for this adventure) it was unbelievably breathtaking!

Slow and steady! The 18 mile courses took us about an hour each to complete with stops and slow navigating of all the elements. Craig loves driving so it was a real treat for him. He is a Great driver, so it was fun and a little nerve racking for me!

After Iron Mountain we did the visitor center and then headed onto the wildlife loop! It didn’t disappoint ! Herds of Bison and calves in tow. So majestic! We also saw some prairie dogs, and an antelope baby. The landscape of green rolling hills and miles of open space were so vast and beautiful!

We stopped in Custer to share a sandwich and have some huckleberry ice cream, which is purple! The place we stopped was called the Purple Pie Place! No joke!

To finish up the day we did the Needles Highway and this just can’t be described. Awesome, Amazing, mind blowing. We felt like we were on another planet. The tunnels even narrower … you could have touched the walls!

Near the end of the Needles Highway what did we come upon? Sylvan Lake! As we rounded the corner we both went wow…. We pulled in and had a look for a launch spot. First time ever we have used a launch dock… you put your kayak in the chute and get in! Dry feet, stable and then push yourself in! Freaking Fantastic!!! So we happily launched and had a beautiful paddle on the most spectacular lake. I told Craig this may have been the most amazing place I’ve ever paddled!

Back onto the Needles and another tunnel! It’s so interesting that of all the awesome things we have done and seen on this journey, it’s the wonders of nature that really matter to me! I love the history and the architecture of the cities, and yet it is this that makes my heart stop! (I felt this rush at Peggy’s Cove as well) Something sacred is happening while just being present!Mountains, Badlands, Oceans and Tides, Forests & seeing Bison!

Home for a charcuterie board dinner and a couple games of crib! I’m only down 5 now!

Day 60…

Another short drive, and we arrived in Rapid City. The Black Hills area. 45 minutes before check in and this KOA told us to return at 1pm. So we found a laundry mat and did all our laundry in a 50lb washer and dried it in half an hour in a jumbo dryer! Done and dusted! Efficient!!!

Back to the campsite and we leveled and unhooked, stabilized and chocked, grabbed our raw veggies, boiled eggs and hot the road. We went to Crazy Horse. If you haven’t heard of this site or the story behind it… please google it. It’s completely fascinating and awe inspiring.

Carving into a mountain the likeness of Crazy Horse riding is pure magic. This project is celebrating its 75th year and they are no where close to achieving the final milestone! The sheer size of the project! 20 full time workers work on it from Monday to Friday every week. It was absolutely incredible to witness. We made a small donation action to be able to bro g a piece of the actual blasted granite from the site. Yes I know I have enough rocks!

From this epic center we went to Keystone and then to Mount Rushmore. It was also amazing , however after seeing the magnitude of the ongoing project at Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore seemed smaller
Than I imagined it to be. Still impressive and beautiful… and lit up at night was wow! We enjoyed the amphitheater and presentation and hearing the history was also interesting.

Day 59

We arrived in the Badlands on Tuesday morning and spent the first few hours exploring the entrance area and the visitor center where we watched a movie and went through the “museum” info area. Very informative and interesting. We received some helpful tips from the information staff and headed off to unhook Ocean.

Once we were set up we hopped back into the truck and drove through another section of the Badlands National Park in complete awe. It was harsh and stark and so erie it’s beautiful.

Craig and I saw our first ever bison in the wild! Such a wonderful opportunity to see these giant animals roaming. We stayed for quite awhile and then one walked across the road right in front of our truck.

We then drove to a town called Wall! It had billboard signs from Sioux Falls. Crazy tourist spot with dozens of t shirt shops and famous fudge outfits! It was fun and we left without spending any money! We did grab a few fruit and veggies and some steak and corn on the cob for dinner, with a yummy wedge salad I tried to re create front the night before.

Day Fifty Eight

Today we left Sioux Falls after driving back downtown to have breakfast at the Phillips Avenue Diner! What a treat to go back in time to an authentic diner & that it on Phillips Avenue!!! We live on Phillips Road and my maiden name is Phillips. So there you have it!

We drove about an hour to Mitchell Souj Dakota and went to the Corn Palace. Yup.. it is a thing since 1891. It was fascinating! The amount of time, love and talent that goes into this corn art is… incredible.

Craig bought popcorn of course, his favourite! We walked around the cute city blocks and ended up having ice cream/dolewhio for “lunch”.

Headed out and drove another couple hours to arrive in Belvedere South Dakota. There is an 1800 little town here that maybe we will visit tomorrow.

We travelled through an extreme rainstorm and we could see it for about 45 minutes before it hit! Wild! Went slow and safe and as soon as we drove into the KOA it stopped raining. The storm passed and the sun came out.

Our campground backs onto to acres of farmland and we can hear the cows lowing, birds singing, coyotes howling and now the crickets are cricketing. Reminds me of home with the neighing horses and the frogs croaking.

We have been watching the sun slowly set and re embracing this slow evening of nature’s symphony.

Fifty Seven 🥴

As we approach 60 … both in trip days and age…Craig’s in December , me two months later…we are counting blessings as well!

On Saturday Night I wasn’t feeling well and got up at about 1:30 am. No lights, no pump, no power. Concerned I woke Craig up. By 2:30am after trying to re change the batteries by running the truck we decided we should maybe drive and see if that would work.

So 40 minutes up the highway we stopped at a rest stop so we would be close to a washroom. (at the casino it was like a three block walk 😳) the semi population was large and they run their rigs all night, so it was a noisy few hours trying to get some shut eye.

Craig had sourced an open Auto Part place about 2.5 hours down the road. We had to buy new batteries. Apparently we drained them with 3 nights of dry camping. (We thought travel between would recharge sufficiently.)

Although a little costly ( we are learning as we go) I am so grateful for Craig’s patience & fix master skills. He doesn’t get flustered or fly off the handle.(apparently that is my department😳)

We were mostly concerned about the fridge and freezer. As we didn’t open it until we arrived in Des Moines Iowa for the battery swap we think it was still cold and frozen enough.

Once Craig swapped the batteries, (again his patience in putting all those wires and connectors together leaves me in awe) we were thrilled to see the little green light on!

Back on the road North to Sioux Falls we breathed a little easier. We arrived at the friendliness KOA. We unhooked and turned on the AC. Then we went to explore the Falls Park!

I love it when you drive and drive and arrive at such sweet spots. This town had the most magnificent waterfall area, set in quarry rock formations and green parkland. It was so beautiful and seeing people enjoying themselves, fishing, walking around and some just sitting taking it all in.

We went to Mackenzie River for a late dinner!! It was downtown and so lovely. Had a hummus platter and a wedge salad while Craig had one of the best pizzas he has ever had! That says alot cause if you know you know. Pizza brought us together and it’s kinda our thing 🍕.

After dinner we walked about the downtown Avenue named PHILLIPS! Took some pics of the Phillips Diner and surrounding sculptures! What a fantastic art installation! Loved it! Especially the VW ones!

Earlier to bed and a full nights sleep! Ready for a little maintenance and showers before we jet. South Dakota has adventure waiting for us.

Even though we are heading west we are still exploring and fitting in adventures as we work our way home. It is a sweet thought for me though… waiting for hugs from the kidsfamily and friends and cuddle time with our dogs. Oh and I can’t wait to see how much (AvaCaTo) Misty hs grown! (Clayton’s kitten) 🐈‍⬛ 💜
