Probably the most famously photographed stilt fishing location on the island is here in Koggala however stilt fishermen can be seen all along the South and West coasts. Though some fishermen supplement their income by posing for tourists, for many stilt fishing is still an important way of life, practicing skills and techniques passed down through generations.

Two colourful visitors to Sri Lanka, the greater flamingo. These migratory birds over-winter in Sri Lanka’s tropical climate sticking mainly to the dry zones of Bundala National Park in the south and the Jaffna region in the north. Sri Lanka is a fantastic destination for the avid bird-watcher with many interesting and rare species, some of which can only be found on the island.

Boating in the Dutch Bay️ the way into the Kalpitiya Lagoon by boat

Four large bodies of water together form a great natural beauty; the Portugal Bay, Dutch Bay, Kalpitiya Lagoon and the Puttalam Lagoon. The Kalpitiya lagoon can be accessed via the Strait of Anaiwasal by boat.

Kalpitiya known better for kite-surfing is also known for various early morning marine excursions.

Kalpitiya is located in Puttalam district, North Western province of Sri Lanka. It is known for its serene beauty. It consists of 14 islands. It has a total area of 16.73 km sq. The people of Kalpitiya are mostly fishermen. It is now developing as an attractive tourist destination.

These magnificent creatures are now largely confined to the safety of the national parks however some do roam further afield. The two parks where you stand the best chance of spotting one are Wilpattu and Yala national parks.
