renewable woods, stainless steel and cotton flannal. Making it right one cup at a time.

El Presidente Coffee. Hand made Chorreadors and wooden utensils. The year was 1993 and I was on assignment with well known Costa Rican photographer Victor Baldizon to both photograph the Presidential campaign photos of Juan Maria Figureres. I experienced my first cup of real coffee on that trip. Not only was I instantly hooked, I had to have the exact type of coffee maker that my first cup was cre

ated from; the Costa Rican Chorreador. Every tourist shop and corner market sold Chorreadors in Costa Rica at that time, but none were anything like the one from the kitchen of my friend and photography partner on this assignment. After seven days of hectic travel with the Figueres’s, photographing them and their beautiful country, and we ended up back at their estate outside San Jose. While at a breakfast I told them the story about my search for the elusive Chorreador and with in a second of telling the story, JMF whispered something to his housekeeper, she leaves and returns minutes later with the Chorreador from their kitchen, the same exact one! It is now 23 years later and that Chorreador has outlived its expected lifespan. A search in the Internet revealed that the same Chorreadors I saw in every tourist shop were now available online, but not mine! None resemble anything like my first and only coffee maker. I couldn't find anything close. As a true "repurposer" I decided to make my own. Weeks of proto-typing and it's done! Made from the same steel rod and even the pig rings from the original design, I've nearly perfected this great, rare coffee maker. My Chorreados are made using repurposed wood bases and the bolsitas are made from cotton flannel, same as the Costa Rican one I still have!.

Here are some wonderful, (copyright protected) photos from renown Costa Rican Nature and Sports photographer, Victor Baldizon. An inspiration to many in his field elpresidentecoffee.com was started thanks to a trip with Victor to photograph Costa Rican presidential candidate, and later President, José Maria Figueres.

I want to show you the steps I take to hand-craft the El Presidente Coffee chorreadors. Each one is made with stainless steel wire that I hand bend into shape.

The wood stands made from American Tulip. The bolsitas (the sock shaped filter) last for up to 5 years and will naturally stain with use.
