Silvana Camilleri, née Tabone, born in Pietà on the 26th of November, 1976. Hailing from Żejtun, she's the mother of one daughter, Estelle. Silvana created her artist identity, ĊmajraArt, after her father's family nickname, taċ-Ċmajra. Her Facebook artist page is named ĊmajraArt by Silvana.
Silvana's love for art started from an early age and has always been an outlet for her to express herself. Therefore, choosing to study art during her secondary school years was a natural choice for her. She then continued to further her education under the tuition of artist Lino Borġ, her former secondary school teacher. She pursued her studies until she was 22 and had the opportunity to meet and observe several Maltese artists at work. Silvana also attended the art school in Naxxar, where with other artists, she took classes in Nudism. During these classes, they practiced drawing live models in various poses.
Besides her love for art, from a young age, Silvana formed part of the organist Joe Caruana's choir in her hometown, Żejtun. Then, at 30, she joined a gospel choir in Santa Lucia, where she was one of the Altos for nine years. She also had the opportunity to represent Malta abroad, including in Dublin, Ireland, and Kent, UK. Around three years ago, before the Covid pandemic, Silvana was offered the leading role in a comedy produced in Isla as the character of is-Sinjura Ċetta. However, when the pandemic hit, Silvana put her beloved singing and drama on hold to dedicate more time to art.
Her first step was to create her artist's page, naming it after her family's nickname, taċ-Ċmajra, in honour of her father, who she lost around four years ago to cancer. An art enthusiast himself, her father always encouraged her to pursue art. Silvana is thankful to be blessed with musicians and sculptors on her father's side of the family. For the last three years, she has worked on various client commissions using multiple media types, including aquarelles, acrylics, pens, and pastels. The subjects were varied, such as Maltese landscapes, animals, portraits, and abstracts, to name a few. However, her favourite subjects are birds and local landscapes, and she is partial to mixed aquarelle and pen.
Silvana participated in several exhibitions with other Maltese artists. In addition, she is a member of Art Club 2000 and another art club in Bormla, where various artists share their passion and organize exhibitions, discussions, and outings for the group.
Her most recent success was her first exhibition as a solo artist. Together with the photographer and her friend Charles Vassallo, they produced Ritrarti, a unique concept in Malta. The two came up with the idea to print the photographer's pictures of everyday objects and life in monochrome. Then, Silvana gave them a new life by meticulously painting directly on the photos. The idea is that every photo represents two types of mediums, photography, and art. The exhibition received lots of positive feedback from the general public.
Silvana continues to dream, and she is working on other projects for the near future. She feels that art is helping her move ahead in life by introducing her to new people and opening up opportunities that she never believed she would have.
🙏 to a beautiful follower on my ĊmajraArt page that volonteered to do the translation for those who are foreigners...
