“Piglet?” said Pooh.
“Yes Pooh?” said Piglet.
“Do you ever have days when everything feels... Not Very Okay At All? And sometimes you don’t even know why you feel Not Very Okay At All, you just know that you do.”
Piglet nodded his head sagely. “Oh yes,” said Piglet. “I definitely have those days.”
“Really?” said Pooh in surprise. “I would never have thought that. You always seem so happy and like you have got everything in life all sorted out.”
“Ah,” said Piglet. “Well here’s the thing. There are two things that you need to know, Pooh. The first thing is that even those pigs, and bears, and people, who seem to have got everything in life all sorted out... they probably haven’t. Actually, everyone has days when they feel Not Very Okay At All. Some people are just better at hiding it than others.

“And the second thing you need to know... is that it’s okay to feel Not Very Okay At All. It can be quite normal, in fact. And all you need to do, on those days when you feel Not Very Okay At All, is come and find me, and tell me. Don’t ever feel like you have to hide the fact you’re feeling Not Very Okay At All.

Always come and tell me. Because I will always be there.” ❤️❤️❤️

Did you know that getting involved during our sessions has amazing benefits for your little one? Not only does it encourage them to do the actions too, but it also boosts brain development. When parents actively participate, it enhances your child's cognitive abilities. Singing, dancing, and playing instruments together helps stimulate their little minds, encouraging early language skills and memory function! ✨

When you massage your baby, they experience an increase in the hormone oxytocin which is associated with greater relaxation, and a reduction in stress hormones such as cortisol. More oxytocin offers more willingness to trust others and general psychological stability. Oxytocin is the hormone that helps us to bond, fall in love, feel calm and happy, and the good news is it's also released for you when you massage your baby!

When you were four days old we were readmitted into hospital as you had jaundice. They put a sign on your cot saying 'Baby McMillan' even though you were to take your Dad's name, Jones. I loved it. That little acknowledgement that you were a McMillan first. I stashed the sign in your baby bag on the way home.

In the evening, the staff swapped shifts and the night nurse took over. I could hear them having a brief disagreement behind my curtain about the frequency I was being asked to pump and feed. The night nurse said politely but firmly "This is not sustainable for the mum. She will be shattered. I'm going to change it to just feeding responsively or every 2 hours."

I think I dreamed her into existence. She was a softly spoken lady in her 60s from Inverness. She exuded calm. She told me tales about her grown-up children as she taught me how to ease my burning mastitis. She sat there kneading my rock-hard b***s as I cried tears of relief.

She appeared to float as she sauntered around us quietly performing her magic in the dark. She told me about side-lying feeding. Something I never kept up, but should have.

When Casey would wake, she would lift him and place him on my b**b for me then gently place him back in his cot, insisting that I try and stay as sleepy as I could. She would change his nappy. Everything.

And I soon drifted off to sleep, to the sound of her friendly chatter to the other, equally dazed new mums. It reminded me of that comforting faraway murmur of the telly as we slept upstairs as children.

And just like a mirage, she disappeared before I awoke for the day. She was the perfect combination of quiet authority and sensitive warmth. She knew what I needed, when I didn't.

In the morning I was brought rice krispies, a cup of tea and a buttered roll. One of those Scottish well-fired, almost burnt morning rolls. It was the tastiest thing ever.

This was the most rested I had felt since you arrived. And I didn't yet know it, but it was probably the most rested I was to feel for the next two and a half years.

"The time was 12:18am. I woke with a start when my daughter elbowed me and then smacked my head, as she flopped over in her sleep and murmured something unintelligible.

Oh geez, I had overslept.

And my husband must have as well because he hadn’t woken me up.

I usually laid with her until she fell asleep, but then that also meant I would fall asleep myself for an hour or so too. Then my husband would wake me up, and we would finally catch up with each other after our long work day, while cleaning up the house and kitchen.

That night as I tiptoed out of her room and checked on my sleeping husband (wondering if we should still clean up), I couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

I read somewhere that new parents on average don’t get “normal” sleep again until their child is 6 years old. I always kind of scoffed at this before I was a mom, and we also had a good sleeper…as a baby.

But I was humbled. They don’t warn you about how weird toddler sleep is. How toddlers have regressions too. How they start having bad dreams. How they want you there til they fall asleep.

So here we are over 4 years in. And that statistic seems to be holding true. Because we have some pretty messed up sleep schedules. Still.

And coming from someone who had awful postpartum insomnia coupled with severe postpartum depression, I’m glad I can say that with a little levity now.

I’ve succumbed to this part of motherhood.

Part of it, I’ve chosen. I don’t 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 to sleep with her until she falls asleep.

But I remember what it was like as a 6-year old myself, scared of the dark (even with a night light), wanting my parents to sleep close to me, and being denied.

I can’t blame them, but I have the power to choose what works for us now.

And maybe part of me is still making up for missing out on her nights for the first half a year because I was recovering from depression and insomnia. People tell me to just leave her to sleep alone now.

But to me, this just feels more right, even if it might feel slightly never-ending."

“Being touched and caressed, being massaged, is food for the infant; food as necessary as minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Deprived of this food, the name of which is love, Babies would rather die. And often they do.”
