Chetty pusam
The Chettiars, a people who come from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, arrived in Singapore in the mid 1800s. Their line of work? Merchant bankers and moneylenders. As they landed on our shores, they formed a merchant-banking system giving loans to locals. Many of the Chettiar moneylenders ran their businesses in long shophouses called kittangis along Market Street and Tank Road. See the last of the kittangis in this video - a place where they conducted business and rested at night.
Chetty pusam is celebrated as by the chettiars on the eve of Thaipusam. Before the sun is up, devotees gather at the Tank Road temple, giving hommage to Lord Murugan, the patron deity of this temple. HE makes his way to visit his little brother, Lord Ganesha whose abode is in Chinatown. That evening, after a full day of festivities, Lord Murugan makes his way home after paying hommage to his Mother, Goddess Mariaman, also in Chinatown. As his carriage returns, he stops at a few banks to bless them.
This vedio takes you from morning to night in 2019 which explains the throngs of maskless devotees.
