"I started my journey into content creation when I picked up a camera from my brother Jesse, just a month or so after I got back to Nelson in June of 2020. I was on the tail end of a 3 year consecutive winter life, between Australia and Japan, and I wanted a sustainable way to stay in that mountain world. It took months and months of learning, taking photos almost every day, but with practice, photography became a way I could express myself, and more importantly, freeze memories for myself to look back on fondly. I’ve been making videos and taking photos for almost 4 years now: It’s become a way of life, and Nelson is the perfect place to draw inspiration.”

Get ready to welcome our wonderful August Photographer in Residence, Cody Scheffelmair (Valley Ridge Media) ✨

“After spending over five years dividing his time between the French and Southern Alps, it’s not hard to figure out where his love for mountain towns and photography first developed. He moved to Nelson in 2020 with a vision to move into the film and photography industry and now works for Tamarack - a Nelson based creative agency - as a photographer and content creator. Tom loves sandwiches, the smell of a candle being blown out and riding his Kawasaki Super Sherpa. As for his photo and video work - he is just making it up as he goes along.”

Let’s welcome Tom Wilson, our May Photographer in Residence 👏🏽

Have you and BOB been formally introduced? BOB, officially known as the Nelson Bridge, has been an iconic landmark since it was unveiled by Premier W.A.C. Bennett in 1957.

BOB wasn’t originally orange, though; it was silver. But in the late 1960s, local traffic engineer Jack Kelsall decided a brighter colour was needed. The details are now hazy—was it to make it more visible to airplanes or to emulate San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge? Either way, it helped cement the bridge’s iconic status.

Around here, bridges are storytellers in their own right.

A lighthouse? On a lake? It's true!

Despite being a serene, leisurely lake now, Kootenay Lake used to be bustling with industry vessels. Specifically, sternwheelers patrolled the shores, transporting not only passengers but supplies!

The Pilot Bay Lighthouse was built on the East Shore of the lake to guide the growing amount of boats through the night and to safety in the calm waters of Pilot Bay during a storm.

Today, Pilot Bay Provincial Park offers stunning views and an easy hike, inviting you to imagine the days when this lighthouse was active and sternwheelers dotted Kootenay Lake.

Happy Earth Day from Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism! 🌿

Today, we celebrate our incredible region and the natural wonders that surround us. As stewards of this land, it's essential that we cherish and protect it for future generations to enjoy.

We would like to acknowledge, with gratitude and appreciation, that the land on which we walk and live is the traditional territories of the Sinixt, the Syilx, and the Ktunaxa peoples, and is home to many other indigenous persons, including the Inuit and Metis.

Let's continue to explore responsibly, promote sustainability, and preserve the beauty of our environment. Explore sustainable tourism: https://nklt.travel/Sustainability

Our Story

Discover this unique corner of British Columbia and enjoy eclectic fodder for foodies, art-goeres, music lovers, history buffs, and adventure seekers.

Nestled in the southeastern corner of British Columbia in a valley surrounded by the Selkirk, Monashee, and Purcell mountain ranges, our communities sprang up along the Kootenay River and Kootenay Lake over one hundred years ago.

Our region consists of six unique communities stretching along a magnificent expanse of lakeshore, steep evergreen valleys and glacial snowfields: Nelson, Balfour, Kaslo, Ainsworth Hot Springs, Lardeau, and Meadow Creek.

We're quietly famous for our trademark mix of culture, adventure, history, and spectacular places to stay and dine—a rare combination of metropolitan with mountain lifestyle.
